The Good Dinosaur was basically sent to die with its release date. It opened with the meteor already bright in the sky.

I remember watching Dinosaur, it was a really bad movie. Not only is the plot a blatant ripoff of Land Before Time, but they couldn't even execute it properly.

The Matrix didn't need to be R. It's PG-13 tops. It doesn't have any swearing minus a few "shits" here and there. No f-bombs as far as I remember. No gruesome violence. No nudity..well maybe when he comes out of the tank...but you could definitely PG-13 it and not miss anything.

No. Compare the shootouts in this movie to the PG-13 shit we get.

This would never fly.

This is a PG-13 movie's idea of somebody getting shot.

The Matrix might not have been overly gruesome, but it is a very violent movie. PG-13 action movies are ridiculously sanitized.

Updated for today--It looks like TFA is falling behind Furious 7 and Age of Ultron presales.

Here are comparisons of China presales from a specific pre-order site, Gewara. Obviously it only represents a small percentage of sales, but it seems they like to use it for tracking purposes. It is not a good predictor, as you can see, but it can still be fun to follow:

...lacks reading comprehension.
I think TFA will pass Titanic WW, but its not going to reach Avatar (unfortunately).

Really crazy how Avatar made so much money when it was such a dumb film.

At least we can rest easy with the domestic record and let the rest of the world deal with having Avatar being #1.

I think as for being dumb there is not much seperating TFA from Avatar. And the main reason why TFA ends up with the domestic record is simply that it runs on 15 % more screens. Are there numbers for actual attendance? I guess that Titanic still reigns there. Avatar already had inflated numbers (well, it was a 3D showcase, so there was a reason) but TFA takes it to a new Level with being screened almost exclusively in 3D when there is no reason to do so other than to make more money. Avatar 2 will probably be the first movie to reach 1 billion domestic.

That isn't true?

The film, with its inter-galactic battles and space-hopping adventures, played particularly well in premium formats — 3D showings accounted for 47% of tickets sales

That's a pretty big difference people are seeming to ignore. People actually want to see avatar in 3D. For TFA, people are somewhat forced to watch it in 3D because hardly and theatres are playing it non-3d.

I saw The Hateful Eight and loved it. From beginning to end it was gripping. "The son of a bitch (Tarantino) did it again" is all I could think once the movie was over.

I find it sad if anyone tries to watch this movie without even knowing the bare minimum basics of the American civil war. I watched this in Canada with my dad, mom, and brother. My mom and brother didn't know anything about the US civil war. I get you are Canadian but come on. If you go into this movie without knowing a) USA had a civil war between north and south, and b) the north won and the south lost, and c) north was against slavery and south was for slavery, and d) people who fought for the south were called "Confederates"... then you will miss a bit of what makes this movie so special. Namely, the scene in the middle of the movie
where Major Warren (Samuel Jackson's character) first enters Minnie's Haberdashery after the the Confederate General and Walton Goggins's character have already reminisced about the good old South, slavery, and whatnot - that scene had me scared for Major Warren, seeing him eyeball everyone in the room. The racial tension in this scene and throughout the whole movie was incredible
.

I rate the Tarantino movies in this order. I know Tarantino did not direct True Romance but I love it too much to not include it in lists like these. I think all the movies in this list are great (even Deathproof, Jackie Brown, and Reservoir Dogs).

1st (best): Django Unchained
2nd: Kill Bill 1+2
4-way tie for 3rd: True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, The Hateful Eight
7th: Deathproof
8th: Jackie Brown
9th: Reservoir Dogs

So next week well see the ad they probably had tucked away since opening day:

(Read in announcer style voice:)

"Star Wars The Force Awakens is now the Number 1 movie of all time (insert Finn line here) be a part of history (insert Rey line here) and see STAR WARS THEN FORCE AWAKENS (now playing)"

We had to buy 3D tickets yesterday for TFA because all the 2D showings for the morning were sold out until 2pm. This was at 10am.

What are you taking about? It's playing in 2D basically everywhere. I've seen it twice, both times in 2D.

Avatar 2 will probably be the first movie to reach 1 billion domestic.

Good luck with that one.

Box office expectations for Avatar 2 are sounding ridiculous. It'll probably have an insane run only to be seen as a disappointment because it didn't crack $3B.

I thought most people who care about this stuff were pretty unanimous in saying that avatar 2 will probably make less than the first?

Then again, never doubt cameron is what I've learned.

Hunger Games fatigue finally sets in big time.

They should have just made one movie instead of splitting it into two boring ones.

At least for my area in Phoenix, there were more 2D showings than 3D. 2D was about every hour and 3D was about every 2-3 hours. Well when I went anyway.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
That list is wrong.
I only did the math on two of the movies, but...

If you take the original box office take of ESB and adjust for 1980 dollars, then adjust the rerelease for 1982 dollars and adjust the Special Edition for 1997 dollars you get around $735 million.
Avatar is around $840 million adjusted.
Yet ESB is ahead of Avatar on that list.

I'm using http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm , which, i think, goes by ticket-price inflation and not general-market inflation.
(Also i forgot Jaws.)

Speaking of The Hunger Games, where did that budget go to? The latest movie didn't look any more expensive than the rest of them.

I watched the final movie with my family. All of us said the same thing: "It's got some cool elements, but it really should have been combined with part 1 to make one movie."

Yeah these two movies suffered from "shit we gotta get this film to two hours, lets bullshit this scene some more."

IMDB lists Lawrence as getting $15M for Joy and $20M for Passengers. Regardless of her cut of Mockingjay, her stock is currently at an all time high.

No they aren't.

That's nothing to do with feminism lol

It's not feminist because you still wanted to see it? If it was actually feminist, that wouldn't be the case, I guess? This is basically what you're saying.

When's the actuals supposed to be comin today?

The final Hunger Games film is the worst film I've seen this year and that includes Terminator Genesys.

At least the latter you could laugh at. Hunger Games was pure 100% boredom. Garbage stuff.

All that budget probably went on
blowing children up
or
black goo turning people in to statues
. Only events in the film I can actually recall involved someone jogging or running away *shrug*

It'll take Avatars spot.

the "ww" means I'm talking about worldwide, not US only, you know that right?

Learned my lesson after the first one. Everyone I saw it with agreed that it was a shitty and boring movie.

When has "red mist" been the line at which you separate "violent" from "ridiculously sanitized?"

You used a joke gif from a movie that features a clown shoving a pencil through someone's eye until it disappears into their skull, and then later features one of the film's heroes driving around with his eyeball and jaw exposed due to the horriffic, suppurating wounds on the side of his face.

A pencil to the eye that shows no blood of any sort or the pencil actually going in, and digital makeup that looks more cartoonish than actually realistic or disgusting.

Nolan is the worst when it comes to showing violence on-screen. The police dropping like sacks of potatoes on TDKR is absolutely awful. He's clearly cutting his movies to avoid even a whiff of getting hit by R.

My comment might have been hyperbolic, but I stand by my opinion that PG13 movies are in fact sanitized, particuarly big budget action flicks. Shit like Terminator Genisys is a prime example in comparison to T2.
