I don't know why I like mortdecai bombing so much. It's like that Gwyneth Paltrow poster made me ignite some unrelenting hate since the first time I saw it.

I agree.

Someone got paid to do that, they received taxable income and probably paid into their 401K with some of that money. That offends me, and I don't know why.

awww crap Kingsman is coming out on the same day as 50. I'm hearing some good things about the movie and now it looks like it'll have a hard time making any money. This is brutal.

50 Shades of Grey and Kingsman are not exactly targeting the same demo.

Boxoffice.com is predicting a $32M 4-day weekend for Kingsman and an $89M 4-day weekend for 50 Shades. That doesn't necessarily mean that either film will end up in those ranges though. Tracking has been pretty poor so far this year.

You seem to think that Speed Racer had as much mass audience appeal as the Wachowskis thought it did. Even back then, people smelled a flop from the jump.

Yeah, seems I overestimating its appeal. It's a shame, but it's perhaps understandable (with the visual style, non existent story, Emile Hirsch) why it didn't do better and failed to find an audience.

$30 million sounds like it would be a pretty successful opening weekend for Kingsman: The Secret Service, particularly since it's in the $60 million range for a budget.

The legs of Paddington feel for me far more impressive. A family film based on a european IP doing so well worldwide months after the christmas window.

Definitely. Super impressive, didn't see that coming.

How many times does a film starring Depp have to bomb like a mother fucker for him to stop getting jobs? does a Pirates movie just make everyone forget about his non-pirates movie performances?

Samuel L. Jackson cast as the most cartoonish Murica villain (complete with his matching Yankee caps for every outfit) looks so fucking cringeworthy.

I get that is the point, still comes off as laaaaaaaaaame.

Hope we get another good Matrix movie now.
That could be a possibility if Warner wants to compete with Star Wars and do another trilogy of movies. I think it would be interesting to have the kid character be the main character in the next Matrix movies all grown up. Problem is Reloaded and Revolution had a lot of mix to bad reception which ruined the series making a comeback. Maybe a tv show would work.

How can Andy and Lana Wachowski still get funding when their movies after the Maxtrix Trilogy never made any money? And their movies are always so expensive. I think they need to make some movies costing around $50 million at most.

The matrix trilogy never made any money now?

As regards going back to the Matrix the Ws are on record saying it's about the last thing they'd ever want to do with their careers.

I hope they do a matrix sequel but please no reboot. Just make it in the vein of the first. Good Kung fu with awesome gun play scenes and pounding music.

There was people back then that had hope for the film, here're some quotes from the SuperHeroHype forum,
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn't exactly an adrenaline trip the way Speed Racer looks to be. unprecedented action ALWAYS brings people to the theater.

Why doesn't Speed Racer get his own forum?

I can't wait to see how they work out that little flying homing beacon thing and the 2 rotary blades so the car can cut down trees as it drives through the forest. LOL Honestly if I see those 2 things I'll be a bit happier.

I watched it in the computer lab, so I didn't get the sound. That being said, I love the visuals of this. It reminds me of the old MegaRace game from 1994. Yeah, it looks kind of childish and cartoony, but since that's what the point is, it looks great.

After seeing the two trailers I have to be honest, this is now my most anticipated film of the summer even though I know nothing about speed racer. It just looks so visually beautiful and like an all around fun film.
And the trailer looks sooo amazing on the big screen...so this is def a movie to watch in theaters

It's pretty great though.

It's interesting that Seventh Son made more in a week internationally, than American Sniper has in seven weeks.

His actually one of the best parts of the film. And his nationality is barely mentioned.

I'm still surprised at American Sniper.
It's totally going to become 2014's #1, right?

Dude, isn't Avengers this year?

Edit: d'oh...just saw the year. Nevermind

I also find it interesting that a movie with wider international appeal would do better. Some sort of black magic trickery, I supposed.

I quite liked Jupiter Ascending, but I'm not surprised that no one went and saw it :p

The Wawchowskis are pretty toxic, doesn't matter if they make good movies or not, the knives are out for them from the get go.
Jupiter has been a football that's been kicked to shit on this forum since it's 1st trailer and Cloud Atlas was the same, and it's not just gaf...pretty much every other popular culture forum and blog does the same.
If I was WB at this point, i wouldn't even let them do Matrix 4. There's just to guarantees with them.

When I saw the trailer, it stood out to me and it comes across as lame. Could he have been the same character in that film, minus the over the top clothes and Yankee caps?

Even if 50 Shades has a boffo opening, I hear the film is baaaad. Really bad. I don't predict legs.

Are they hiding it from early reviews?

Not sure why though. Jupiter's trailers were a bit all over the place sure, but Cloud Atlas was so fucking phenomenal that I was going to give this one the benefit of the doubt.

Even if the Wawchowskis films fail, I think they have mostly made solid ones. I'll still see Jupiter.

Will JA even be able to scrape past 100M WW?
Pitiful

Which is silly considering they ripped that story off.

I thought it was more a Cameron thing, where it wasn't any one story they took the idea from but several blended together. Unlike Cameron they weren't stupid enough to brag about ripping their sources off on set in front of people who knew the guy they were ripping off.

Apparently so. Once Pirates 5 hits (whenever that is) or Alice in Wonderland 2 (if the success is as good as the Tim Burton film) then you'll see him appearing in movies all over the place which fall off the face of the Earth a month later.

I think they need to do a smaller scale lower budget sci fi movie get back to the sort of intimacy they had with 'bound' visually and technically not many directors are touching them.

Would love to see what they can do with a lower budget.

I quite enjoyed the sequels for what they were and Animatrix was pretty great. V wasn't too bad either.

Speed Racer is probably their second best movie to date, I really don't know why that one bombed. Seemed to have quite a lot of mass audience appeal. Was there any specific reason for it bombing? I didn't really follow B.O news back then.

It was a non-starter, no hype or interest was drummed up. Marketing failed that movie with poor trailers that were incapable of telling you what it was about, or even what its tone was, or even showing off its crazy visuals. Speed Racer is a colorful, breezy, kids/family-friendly action-packed movie, it really had no business bombing the way it did.

I thought Cloud Atlas was a great movie too. And I'm not the only one. IMDB score is 7.5

I like how the BO is apparently doing 10% better than last year, especially considering all the bombs. There's already been 4 major ones (Blackhat, Mordecai, Seventh Son, and Jupiter Ascending).

I guess it's really all owed to American Sniper, which made so much more money than I could've ever expected. Even in it's third (fourth?) week, it still beat all the new releases except for Spongebob (which was surprising to me too).

People said the same about the book. Look what happened.

I really don't see a lot of legs for the film. Erotic films have never lasted very long in the past, and I just don't see how it could possibly attract any attention past Valentine's Day.

It'll do well this weekend, but it'll make the vast majority of its money in those three days.

I can't see this movie doing well. It's one think to read a BDSM book and no one will know. It's a complete other thing to go out in public and be seen buying a ticket and going into a theater for it.

I do think it will do crazy sales on home media for this reason.

I don't know, people don't seem all that embarrassed to talk about how much they loved the books in public.

More than that i just wonder if the window for a 50 Shades movie sort of passed. I don't get the same sense with this as I did before stuff like Twilight released. Are the books still big and popular?

Well, it's a fucking awesome movie. I kinda want to see Jupiter Ascending, because in spite of how poorly it's done, I hear nothing but positive things for it.

I thought the same until I saw my friends mum post a status on facebook about going to see it over spending valentines dinner with her husband and got 15+ comments of people saying they were doing the same
People arent as prudish as they once were and its really not often an event film for 25+ females comes along

Wait, Jupiter Ascending is at 23%??

So it's both a commercial AND critical flop?

Well, I hate to say I told you so, gaf. But that's what you get for hiring Mila Kunis as the lead. Yuck.

hearing from? surely not critics

and about Paddington, it is impressive, heck I'm English and I wasn't even sure people would have been interested here, yet it made enormous bank. It's been a positive surprise indeed!

Didn't Shame do pretty well at the BO? At least for that kind of movie...

Shades also has the added benefit of opening on Valentine's weekend. That might boost numbers?
