where were you for fifteen, young Reynolds as Billy the god :P

I remember Ryan Reynolds from Fifteen on Nickelodeon. I also remember Laura Harris being on that show too.

What's interesting, is at the time I originally saw Fifteen, I distinctly remember my young self thinking how much older and cooler those teens on that show looked. Now I look at photos and think they were babies, they look so young.

American Sniper, while technically a December release, didn't go wide til Jan. It made serious bank.

I know, it's like people will go see a movie at anytime of the year as long as there's a demand for that movie. Most PG-13 and lower movies try to release during the summer so school kids can see the movies on the weekdays, but R movies don't have to worry about that.

The Revenant had another great weekend, too. Another great R-rated film that is doing surprisingly well. Could hit 400m WW by the end of its run as it opens up to a few more decent sized markets.

Yep, despite the last several years, Jan and Sep are still dumping grounds.

Technically, yes, but the only reason American Sniper isn't a January film is because it needed an Oscar-qualifying release before the start of the year. For the most part, it's a January movie.

Even then, with Star Wars and Avatar possibly staking out the next 3-5 Decembers, I could see a good enough movie being afraid of those two and opening in January before I see a movie that could work as a summer movie being placed into September.

What the heck was with our obsession with baggy, ill-fitting clothing back in the 90's?

I know September hasn't had a massive hit yet. What other months are still considered bad months?

April has the least amount of $100M grossers of any month on the calendar. That month was a wasteland in between The Matrix in 99 and Fast Five in 2011.

Here's what the bottom film in the top 10 of each month has grossed (domestic only)

January - Ride Along - $134,938,200
February - Kingsman: The Secret Service - $128,261,724
March - The Croods - $187,168,425
April - Hop - $108,085,305
May - Shrek the Third - $322,719,944
June - Monsters University - $268,492,764
July - Transformers - $319,246,193
August - Straight Outta Compton - $161,197,785
September - Remember the Titans - $115,654,751
October - The Departed - $132,384,315
November - Home Alone - $285,761,243
December - The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug - $258,366,855

September has Magnificent Seven this year though. If Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington can't make 175M in September, I don't know what could.

where'd you hear this. i wouldn't be surprised though considering how trash i found travis' other movie and how shocked i was at how good dredd ended up being.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/10/director-drama-heats-up-on-dredd.html

The LATimes had reported Travis was removed and Garland took over editing and might even demand a co-director credit. They both released a statement denying that anyone was fired or Garland was looking for more credit, but said they had an "unorthodox collaboration".

Who knows what the exact situation was. Garland has certainly said he's butted heads with every director he's ever worked with, and that he's always been around and collaborative enough that he didn't feel like Ex Machina was his debut. Maybe there was some stealth shifting of duties that were mutually agreed upon, or not mutual but no one wanted that to come out and affect the movie's reception. It'd hardly be the first time.

We'll see...

Denzel Washington is relatively reliable, but his highest domestic gross is American Gangster at $130m. Antoine Fuqua's highest was The Equalizer at $101m... in September.

I think everybody underestimated just how well Deadpool would do. Wouldn't be surprised if it's mostly front loaded, though.

Can't wait to see it when I have the chance.

Well fucking deserved.

Hope Reynolds doesn't get burried again with chick flicks.

Do chick flicks even exist in that form anymore? I could swear I haven't noticed anything that looks like your typical rom com after that period of ensemble cast romcoms(He's Just Not That Into You, Valentine's Day, New Years Eve) and fuckbuddying to love(No Strings Attached, Friends With Benefits)

They do. I can't remember the name of one but I assure you they do.

And I love them all

Heigl is probably filming 4-5 of them since it's the last "hope" she has as actress.
I like seeing stuff like this too. Nice for watching while doing stuff on the laptop. Searched Netflix and Prime specially for them. Maybe not really RomCom but Aloha with Adams / Cooper was nice little distraction.

Chris Evans has two kind of romcoms out there. Well more rom than com, but a nice little distraction. I think it's called before you go.

Stuck in Love on Netflix wasn't bad either

Just checked IMDB and there's 2 coming out next month (though both are marketed towards the urban/black market).

Shit that is some crazy shit right there.

Now I'm really curious about how the upcoming Fox/Marvel output will be.

i doubt that they will change anything. marvels stuff is strictly pg13, netflix hast the "adult" stuff.

maybe fox will allow the next wolverine film to be r-rated or another unrated version on bluray (man, the unrated cut of the wolverine was sooo much better than the theatrical release...).

its not the r-rating alone, that made the film a hit. the film was 100% true to the character, had a fantastic marketing (that worked hand in hand with the r-rating) and the most important thing: the film is just fucking good.

if suicide squad underperforms (and bats vs supes), i could see warner/dc adjusting their movie slate and bring in some r-rated/crazy stuff.

I disagree. Even though yes, r rated movies are doing better, it's still riskier than pg13. If DCs biggest films pretty much ever fail, I can't see them thinking that suddenly going r rated is going to fix that.

Even though im never going to see Deadpool im really happy for Ryan, finally getting to do the movie he loves.

Congrats on the success

I'm not expecting a Rated-R line-up out of this. I should have probably mentioned. I'm thinking more will this movie's success opening the studio up to do more faithful adaptations of the characters, will New Mutants be more X-Men then the actual X-Men movies were. These aren't really questions just interested to see what the movies will be from here on out, if this movie means anything to creative aspect.

The guys discrediting Captain America must be eating crow. It beat out The Incredible Hulk on its overseas gross. Combine that with the domestic gross and it beat out The Incredible Hulk again. Of 12 Marvel movies, it is ranked 11. Just before the redheaded stepchild that Disney doesn't own. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon on the other hand, number 8 and 12 of all time. Your example posts don't seem to be that great of a point actually. TheKaeptain and Comedy Bomb seem to be right.

At most DC will release an unrated cut of Suicide Squad.

Only a single cut of a film can be rated and released. If you want to release an R rated cut of a PG13 film you'd have to withdraw the PG13 cut and resubmit it for an R rating.

WB would never fly in the face of the MPAA and release an unrated film.

Thanks.

Yeah, I'm Ryan Reynolds. PM me for investment opportunities in Hollywoodland.

Ah. Guess I just somehow completely ignored their existence for a few years, and I'm by no means a romcom hater.

I mean 300 is one of those endlessly quoted and referenced movies, and has been for a while. I'm surprised someone would say it never was that big.
