After Star Wars insane December success, GotG august run and now deadpool is February I hope movie companies start spreading their action blockbusters out more. If they are good they can succeed any month. B v S will be another nice litmus test.

Really have no choice since their is so many movies and franchises.

The crazy thing is with so many avenues to watch a movie going to the theater is still preferred and that makes me happy.

Went on Saturday at 22:55 and only 3 rows were empty out of 18 I guess...wouldnt have thought that it would be so packed at that time. Plus the movie was great though the numbers are really high, wouldnt have expected that :D

Lets hope the marketing for Skullpoopl 2: Now with more Dead and more Pool will be on point too :D

Yeah, it's refreshing that the theatre-going experience still seems to be very popular given the alternatives.

My noon matinee was completely sold out yesterday. I only saw one kid that I thought was a little too young to see this. No one walked out though.

The people next to me were weird, they didnt like any of the trailers beforehand (Batman vs Superman, Civil War, Zoolander 2) and they left as soon as the credits started rolling and i think they didnt laugh once :D

There were a couple of late teen / early 20s ladies on my left that I could tell were only there for Ryan's D.

I think everybody underestimated just how well Deadpool would do. Wouldn't be surprised if it's mostly front loaded, though.

I'd be surprised if it is. Word of mouth is big on this. Middle aged ladies on my Facebook feed are saying they loved it to death. It's gonna have a tail.

I kind of hope they keep the DP sequel at $100M or less for production. I don't know why, but part of me thinks that if they throw $150M+ at it, it just wouldn't work. I'd love for a running gag to be the continuation of only affording a couple of X-Men characters per movie lol.

Any comments from Reynolds on this?

Would loved to have seen his reaction when he got the call about the numbers

I was looking for this as well, but all I know now is that the dude cried when he saw the finished Deadpool costume. I can only guess that his reaction was probably the same. Also, I was in the Deadpool panel last year at Comic Con, and he was floored when the trailer received a standing ovation.

That ain't pavement he's walking on. It's sunshine. Thank you to the #Deadpool fans who took us from leaked test footage all the way to the main event. It's because of you, we got to make the real Deadpool. The right way.

Based Stephen Chow! His "The Mermaid" just dethroned TFA in a "single territory opening weekend" category.

TFA $247.9M in the USA
Mermaid $275.1M in China

Wow! I can't wait to see it. The last thing I saw from Chow were Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, and both almost broke me in half from laughter. :D

What on earth is the mermaid and why does everyone in China want to see it?

I think The Mermaid's figure is for a whole week, but that's still astounding. It's so odd to think we're entering a time when some of the biggest hit movies in the world are these Chinese movies Western audiences haven't even heard of (and I wonder if/when some of them might crossover).

Seems like a heck of a week for China

http://chinafilminsider.com/china-box-office-sets-new-weekly-record-led-homegrown-trio/

The Chinese box office racked up the largest seven-day gross in the history of the movies anywhere, with Valentine’s Day ticket sales in the world’s second largest movie market putting an exclamation point on the achievement.

An estimated RMB 3.56 billion ($548 million) in tickets were sold over the seven-day Lunar New Year period starting Monday, February 8, a gross that was expected to rise as several hundred theaters had yet to report revenues at press time.

Not only was this the highest-grossing week of all-time in China, but the highest-grossing week of all-time in any territory, shattering the North American record of $529.6 million, set from December 26, 2015 to January 1, 2016.

They (TFA and Mermaid) are both for a whole week.

The article about the Mermaid topping The Force Awakens is wrong since TFA made $390M in those same 7 days, but it was still higher than The Avengers first 7 days which was still a record 7 day gross just 1 year ago.

Deadpool's 3-day actual was lower than projected ($132M and change), but Monday was much stronger giving it a 4-day total over $152M.

Deadpool's first Tuesday was larger than that of Iron Man 3. It was also much larger than that of Spider-man 3. I wonder if Deadpool will hold well enough this weekend to pass Spider-man 3's gross to date by Friday or Saturday.

Spider-Man 3 grossed $337M domestic.

China extended Kung Fu Panda 3's run for another month. It is currently sitting at about $135M in China. I am not sure how much extra it can squeeze out with the extension unless there is a re-release, but it should be enough to limp to $150Mish.

The Mermaid has grossed about $345M in China during its first 10 days of release. That would give it the 4th best 10-day gross of all time domestic behind The Force Awakens ($540M), Jurassic World ($403M) and the Avengers ($373M). However, its worth keeping in mind that all of those had 2 weekends in that timeframe. The Mermaid opened on a Monday (China doesn't have a new movie day) and therefore has only had a single weekend so far.

The Mermaid will be the first time a film hits $500M in a territory that isn't US+Canada. It's sort of crazy that just 3 years ago, China only had 1 film over $200M (Avatar).

Deadpool's first set of weekdays continued to top those of Iron Man 3's as of Wednesday. Iron Man 3 went on to have a $72M second weekend.

Perhaps the lack of family audiences is leading to Deadpool having relatively stronger weekdays, but things look pretty positive regarding a good second week drop.

holy fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

I'm half expecting Luke to send Rey to train with ancient jedi master Stephen Chow...walker.

Deadpool, perhaps not too surprisingly, will be the box office champ again.

In a weekend that will be dominated again by 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool, many have described the next three days as a B.O. battle between heaven and hell with Sony Affirm’s sword and sandal film Risen going head-to-head with A24’s period arthouse horror film The Witch in wide release. Last night, The Witch clocked $630K while Risen took in $425K. One title was screened at the Vatican, while the other has the endorsement of the Satanic temple.

Deadpool was, of course, the top title last night with an estimated $8M at 3,558 theaters and a week’s cume of $180.4M. It will no doubt fly past the $200M mark by Saturday. Projections for the Marvel anti-hero’s sophomore sesh is between $55M-$60M.

That's a lot higher than I would have guessed.

Zoolander 2 tracking was in the low $20's, it's hard to gauge.

Odd quote from the publication too:

The Vin Diesel action fantasy “The Last Witch Hunter” disappointed domestically and topped out with $27 million for Lionsgate last fall, but took in $113 million from abroad. Should “Gods of Egypt” follow a similar path, and maybe break out in some overseas markets to generate overages, the studio could wind up solidly in the black.

Lionsgate took a write-down on "The Last Witch Hunter," what are they saying?

They are saying that they set up the finances different to tlw. So if the film performs similarly, they could actually make a profit, unlike the last witch hunter.
