Seems like a respectable opening, but not surprised at the drop. You can only save the world so many times without it losing any significance. Plus these movies are visually exhausting.

Why do you think Star Wars 7 won't top more than 180M in its opening weekend ?

I know the record is Hobbit with 84M but that's Star Wars, the hype is real and in USA, the franchise is so strong !

American are too busy in December ? ^^
Because people wait till Christmas break. It's why December movies have such good legs.

No Avengers number yet?

Disney thinking twice about putting out a bullshit $200 million and have people print it as news. I expect a big readjustment tomorrow to $195 million or less...

Maybe if the fight affected the movie so much, the second weekend drop will be lower. We'll see.

Wonder if Furious 7 can beat the first Avengers $1.519 billion.

Furious 7 is at 1.3 billion. It's gonna happen for sure.

There is no chance Disney isn't let down by this. Its gonna open 20 million less than Avengers 1.

It will still make major bank though.

They will cry themselves to sleep tonight on top of a large pile of cash and surrounded by beautiful women. Crying that the pile of cash wasn't larger.

Disney themselves were bragging about the opening weekend record potentially going down.

Probably based on those previews numbers.

Disney still has the top 3 opening weekends of all time (maybe the top 4 by the end of the year), so it's hard to feel too bad for them.

Oh I'm aware, hence my point of still making major bank.

But there's no way Disney thought it would have a 20 million decrease opening weekend. It's opening is going to be considered a bit of a disappointment. Its not game over for hero flicks or anything but its also I'm sure not what Disney thought was going to happen

1. The christmas period is insanely busy, people dont have time to rush out on opening weekend and will catch it later, which is why winter releases always have good legs
2. The previous record is the first hobbit. This isnt some random film but the highly anticipated return of a beloved franchise and the adaptation of an enormous popular book
3. there is more chance for shitty weather in december
4. star wars will probably open on a wednesday or thursday
5. Furthermore, other than the very first star wars film the franchise has never held the opening weekend record

Star wars will probably open closer to the Hobbit than it will either of the avengers

Disney made a mistake. They should have launched Ultron in the US together with the worldwide launch last weekend.

They underestimated the fight. $400 million in pay per view is absurd if true. It was an event like the FIFA World Cup or the Oscars. 80% of the people watching probably never had seen a boxing match in the last 10 years, and 50% probably didn't even know who Pacquiao is. People tuned in to see which celebrities were there.

Half kidding, maybe. I have no idea about the audience of the fight.

On Star Wars VII, it'll probably do some crazy opening weekend record for December, over $100 million for sure, but, yeah, it'll be a hard hill to climb to reach Age of Ultron.

No I actually agree with you, it would have been better for them to launch a week earlier. The fight clearly had an impact, thats $400 million in consumers cash being spent, a massive amount.

Thing is, when they set that date Mayweather vs Pacquiao wasn't even announced

Thanks for detailed answer :)

I find it cute how some people think Star Wars won't just destroy all this holiday season.

you got 7 more months to get your soul right with jesus :p

Aren't they the same people that thought Avatar would be destroyed by Age of Ultron and now AoU is barely going to track the same as TDKR numbers?

No one is questioning that SW is going to clean up this holiday season. Many of us just question it setting an all time opening weekend record when it opens in December.

Other than the December opening record what will it destroy? Avengers might have to settle for second place domestic, but I don't really see that many records going down.

- Biggest December opening
- Maybe a few fastest to milestones (Fastest to $350M/400M/$450M/$500M are doable if it gets past $550M domestic based on holiday boosts)

what else is it going to take?

It'll be a juggernaut. I just can't see it taking the opening weekend record or topping Age of Ultron's opening weekend record, December releases generally don't hit that high, even if it is Star Wars. It will be huge though, and it will gross more than Age of Ultron in the long run.

Only people who were deluded or joking thought that. I can't think of anyone worth taking seriously who expected AoU to beat Avatar.

It's over, period. Marvel lost their last ace, and that's the end of their MCU hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for Marvel Studios. Marvel has nothing left, nothing they can reveal tomorrow would fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a MCU. Except if they want to watch Captain America: Civil War. Which will also make $180+ million opening weekend.

The age of Marvel is done.
