Wkd Box Office 08•22-24•14 - Guardian of the Box Office, it's just not Miller time

Well, there were problems scheduling Jolie (she had a baby) and then there were problems scheduling Rodriguez, and throughout all that, Miller wasn't writing Sin City, he was flogging his two shitty Batman projects to death, resurrecting one (Holy Terror) so by the time Rodriguez finally came back around to being ready to do Sin City, it was like 6 or 7 years later. It still took another 2 years from that point to actually get this thing made.

That reminds me, wasn't Miller supposed to do a prequel graphic novel for 300: Rise of an Empire? I just remembered thinking how weird it was that the movie was "based on" a graphic novel that wasn't even finished/out yet.

Dear all other films....

Well deserved.

That scene was better in the trailer than it was in the movie. The lack of censoring took away some of the humor.

showtimes from my local cinema for sin city:

Standard 2D 8:30pm 9:50
3D 2:50pm 4:10 5:40 7:00

this movie wouldn't be bombing so hard if standard 2d showings weren't so hard to come by

Go go gadget Guardians of the Galaxy

In searching for the DVD estimated release date I notice all the descriptions have Quill as a "US Pilot turned space adventurer", which I think is from the comics but was it also the original screenplay?

dat disappointed Disney

Speaking of, I was just in Disney and they had zero GotG stuff other than movie posters on all the buses. I was bummed. Even the Lego store didnt have any merchandise, they were sold out. I finally saw one dude with a black GotG shirt on and asked him where he got it but turns out he got in back home before he came.

Total Lifetime Grosses

= Worldwide: $238,810,000

most likely, but i wouldn't imagine it being at this scale. people aren't willing to dish out extra cash for the 3d showings

People aren't willing to dish out cash period. The 2d/3d thing is a minor concern next to the fact it's not appealing to anyone but maybe 500k people in the entire country, looking at these numbers.

And yeah, 25 million is probably an optimistic prediction for its domestic haul at this point.

The Spirit continues to destroy Miller's career.

Frank Miller destroyed Frank Miller's career. The Spirit was just collateral damage.

Lucy making banks worldwide too. Will very likely be Besson's most successful movie as a director. (Doubt it'll beat Taken 2 so it won't be the highest grossing movie he's been involved in though).

Guardians is now pretty much guaranteed to reach 285m, might have a shot at passing the 300m line but we'll see.

Expendables 3, which leaked on the internet weeks before opening and did much worse than its predecessors, scored higher in its second week than Sin City's opening.

"Bomb" doesn't quite sum up how horrible that is

Man it would've been funny if TMNT won the summer

GOTG is just over $19M behind Man of Steel after 24 days. It gained $6M on MoS this weekend, and with Labour day next weekend, it has a shot of gaining upwards of $9-10M on MoS next weekend. Coming off a $17.6M fourth weekend where the film dropped just under 30%, I'd easily give Guardians a 90% chance of hitting $300M domestic. September is dead. Drops are going to continue being good.

Age of Extinction will be the 10th or 11th highest grossing movie of all time. Domestically, Turtles are $100M behind Guardians. 0% chance

I think even if drops did start coming steeper and faster (and looking at September, Kswiston's right in that such a scenario likely will not be happening) Disney/Marvel would do what WB didn't for Man of Steel, and keep it in theaters anyway just to get to that 300 mil mark for marketing purposes.

Sin City 2 looked really awful anyways and its obvious that audiences had no real interest in it. Gotta say I didn't think it would bomb as bad as it did though.

Yeah, it's just that it's starting to fall behind IM and I wasn't sure how well it was going to keep up considering the grosses are starting to be similar to Captain 2. The complete absence of competition should take it there eventually indeed.

Lucy is going to make more money than Expendables 3, Hercules, and Sin City combined.

But yeah, Black Widow is "too risky" for Hollywood.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
LOL at Sin City. I remember arguing with a fellow teacher who told me that the Sin City franchise would be better remembered than Nolan's Batman. Hilarity.
