Let's not pretend a month after launch that it was a guaranteed success going into its release. Marvel took a big risk on a franchise that was extraordinarily niche to the average moviegoer.

Plenty of people were suggesting that general audiences are now going to these movies based on the Marvel name (just like people used to go to Pixar movies based on their rep) weeks/months before this film debuted, and that does seem to be the case.

Wow...at this point, Disney is making more money than God (or at least James Cameron) lately. Frozen, Marvel, and another guaranteed billion for the new SW movie. WB was rolling when they had Harry Potter and Batman, but I'm trying to recall if anything's come close to what Disney has now.

It won't be long before we get a Harry Potter reboot

Is Hollywood eventually going to start making movies in Chinese, with Chinese actors and then dub them into English for us plebes?

Yes, yes, likely.

Fixed.

We are getting like a trilogy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them first though.

So assuming that, WB will have HP, DC, and Lego movies, along with whatever Nolan is up to. But seriously, Disney is cleaning up like I've never seen from anybody not named Cameron. It's like they're just shaking a great big money tree at this point.

That's not how it works. If it's a movie I want to watch, I'll see it in whatever is available at the time I want to go. Sometimes it's 2D, sometimes it's 3D, it really makes no difference to me. I've never once not seen a movie because of the format it's in.
but then there's individuals such as myself, and, from what i can tell, plenty of others who pass off 3d just at the sound of it.

and it doesn't help when 2d showings become so hard to come by. i'm simply suggesting there should be more balance in available formats.

Judging by the box office of most of these movies, you're a minority. 3D makes more money, so the balance will always swing towards that. When people just start outright refusing to go to the 3D showings is when they would swing back. I don't see that happening anytime soon.

HTTYD 2 continues its momentum by shooting past Puss in Boots, a widely-considered success from DWA. Now, HTTYD 2 is more than $100 million above the equivalent release period of its predecessor.

With this kind of overseas momentum, I now expect >$600 million totals. HTTYD 2 should have no problem overtaking The Croods, DWA's most successful new IP in the past five years.

If we're lucky, HTTYD 2 might even be able to surpass Madagascar 2 and Kung Fu Panda 1 in total grosses.

And, I've heard reports that DWA stocks are rising from strong overseas HTTYD 2 performances...fantastic news for the company.

There was a standalone Puss in Boots movie and it grossed over 500M WW. Is this real life?

Great to hear HTTYD 2 do well. Loved the film and hope Dreamworks continues to deliver those types of movies

Overseas audiences love Shrek. Shrek 4 made $513M overseas, more than Shrek 2 or 3. In the US, it dropped by like $100M from Shrek 3 (which was already down more than $100M from Shrek 2).

I should watch it then. Just seems a hard character to make a movie around and then successfully market it for

Yeah Shrek seems to be a massive name back in the day. I'm wonder if Dreamworks will ever get a property quite like that again. I guess Madagascar did well too

The whole Transformers success in China thing is really interesting, biggest movie ever. Now I read that they shot part over there, and there were even Chinese product placements, ha. Seeing as it blew our box office away, maybe they'll try to put more native actors in it.

What about Ice Age?

That's not Dreamworks, it's Fox iirc. And those are insanely popular overseas too, over 80% of Ice Age 4's gross came from overseas. Before Frozen, Ice Age 3 and 4 both broke the record for highest grossing animated movies overseas.

Let's not pretend a month after launch that it was a guaranteed success going into its release. Marvel took a big risk on a franchise that was extraordinarily niche to the average moviegoer.

Guardians of the Galaxy was never 'extraordinarily niche'. It always had broad appeal - much more than other super hero movies. People that were saying it was gonna bomb because no one knew who the characters were was a really weak excuse.

Hrm. If it did 25m first week, and 25m second week, I think it could do above 70m.

4 days vs 7, and movies drop off pretty quickly after 2 weeks in China. Transformers 4 made $99M in its first weekend, ~$110M over the next week, but finished a little over $300M.

I see. Still.... I will remain optimistic.

Also. I see KFP 3 doing 200-300m in China when it hits.

Isn't Kung Fu Panda 3 out next year?

Kung Fu Panda 2 and Transformers 3 released a few months apart in China. KFP2 did just over $90M, while Transformers 3 did $160M. I don't see how KFP3 outgrosses Transformers 4.

I thought so too before seeing it but sure enough, they made it work.
