Big Hero 6 opens here next week. Sometimes children films get delayed for MONTHS here too, especially if they open in the US in off-peak periods which aren't school holidays. I feel pretty lucky about it this time, only a one week delay!
I was originally planning to go see Interstellar, but then the reviews/runtime came out.
I absolutely HATED TDKR. Hated it. It was way too long and pseudo-intellectual to the point I wanted to walk out of the theater.
Maybe Interstellar is different, but it sounds like it suffers the same problems. I'm not sitting through another three hours of overly dramatic panning shots and dialog that's written to be thought-provoking but comes across as laughable. Nolan scared me off. I'll wait for the home release.
Age of Extinction and Amazing Spider-Man 2 were more hyped, I believe. I haven't seen Interstellar yet, but I have a hard time believing the film is more "mediocre" than those two.
I know it was in line with expectations, but I'm kinda disappointed about Interstellar's numbers
It was hyped up to the heavens but $50M, while solid, just seems kind of meh
Interstellar needs that Inception word of mouth (which was REALLY strong for at least a month or two before the "it's not that smart" backlash started rolling in) and I don't think it's going to get it.

Also, directly comparing Big Hero 6 and Interstellar's budgets is a good way to get people to realize that animation isn't inherently "cheaper" an artform than live action filmmaking.
I'm really annoyed that Big Hero 6 was delayed all the way to Xmas where I live. :|
The box office next week will be much more interesting for Interstellar. With its divisive at best word of mouth and Hunger Games inevitably obliterating everything in two weeks, who knows what kind of holds it'll get. Solo might yet get Nolan's Heaven's Gate!
Honestly though, it really doesn't deserve to be a success on its own merits, but it'd be nice if caused more filmmakers and studios to make more space travel movies.
It was generic, standard superhero stuff, but it was DONE WELL, which is a lot more than can be said about Intersteller's 3rd act, which was so sappy that I should have brought pancakes to the theater.
Reading the OP thread about how a lot of audiences were still confused even after all the infodumping I see Intersteller taking a big hit on Sunday and on the second weekend.
Interstellar launched to a $132.25 millionglobal day-and-date debut, opening acros 62 overseas markets with an $80 million total. The result is on par with Gravity, a good start considering Nolan's film does not carry a 3D surcharge. IMAX contributed $7.2 million from 206 screens for a per-screen average of $35k. The overseas haul should see a big bump next Wednesday with the film's Chinese debut. As of Sunday, Interstellar is leading the charge in key markets like South Korea ($14.1M), the UK ($8.4M), and Russia ($8.1M). Continental Europe is not far behind with France ($5M), Germany ($4.4M), and Italy ($3.6M) also posting strong showings. Mexico ($3.2M) and Brazil ($1.9M) are also proof of the film's success in key Latin American markets.
The Maze Runner maintains its pace overseas as it earned $11.6 million from 33 markets over the weekend. The film crossed the $225 million milestone outside of North America and currently stands at $324 million worldwide.
$7.6 million haul from 17 territories lifted Big Hero 6 to a $23 million cume outside of North America. The film has now grossed a worldwide total of $79.2 million. Russia continues to lead the overseas pack with an $18.2 million cume. The film expands to Mexico, Trinidad, Singapore, Malaysia, and Cambodia next weekend and will continue opening overseas throughout February
I continue to be amazed by the Maze Runner results; should achieve $360-380 million when all is said and done - pretty good.
Interstellar had a disappointingdebut comparatively to what analysts were claiming. I don't think it is going to achieve even Inception numbers WW - should do about $700 million?
Gaf loved wreck it ralph which was such shit, so I dunno about big hero 6. But on the other hand the trailers alone for the movie are better than wreck it ralph
Will check out the bluray
Interstellar is so much better than inception imo. First nolan movie with a human character. But its not gonna make inception money at all. It's less accessible and pretty damn long too. And extremely divisive. Just look at the gaf thread

What was done well about it? The action bits were nondescript, I never felt any sort of excitement.
I define "well done" animated superhero action set pieces as the Incredibles.
Dash running on the island for example was completely enthralling. The action in Big Hero 6 never approached something like that.
In terms of the nonsensical story choices + stakes -
Why was I supposed to be invested in the Professor's daughter? Came out of nowhere, she hadn't been built up at all, what a poor sense of stakes.
Also, the decision to have the Professor be the man behind the Kubuki mask was poorly executed.....his motivations were flimsy, and after Hiro + his pals confront him, he still goes into, must destroy you mode since the plot calls for it. Poor finish.
The Stan Lee post credits scene was wonderful though, and reminded me of why I liked the first half of the movie so much, the humor, the Hiro/Baymax dynamic, sense of loss with the brother, etc.
As for Interstellar, we'll have to agree to disagree as I found the 3rd act emotional + enthralling (the whole experience really).
What you found sappy, I found moving.
The 5D bookshelf sequence is one of the coolest things I've seen in a sci fi film, dovetailed beautifully with the first act. Some are writing it off as a Shyamalan contrived twist, but it worked brilliantly for me.
Were there a handful of moments where I questioned certain things?
Yes, but I was so taken by Matthew McConaughey's emotional performance, the dynamic between him + Murph, the relentless sense of tension + wonder, that it felt like the best kind of roller coaster.
In IMAX 70 mm, I felt I was swimming in space.
I get why it's divisive for some, but despite it being messy at points, it's still the most adrenaline I've felt in a theater since the Raid 2.

Very easily. The Babadook is about more than people getting fucked up and killed and at it's heart is not a horror movie as such, I can imagine teens and horror bloodhounds saying it's 'boring'. those audiences eat shit like 'Ouija' up. I listened to a hilarious conversation on the train last week from a girl who was talking about that Annabelle film which she called the scariest film of all time.
Those are the people who gives those movies money.

Big Hero 6 deserves all the money. Damn was it fun, and the visuals were gorgeous. The story is standard super hero stuff and it isn't breaking any ground or anything, but it did everything well and so tons of fun and exciting.
And as for the Marvel connection, they don't ever say so in the film. It doesn't even say "based on the Marvel comic."
Just Quesada and Loeb in the credits as consultants, and then a joke reference in the post credits scene.
Haven't seen BH6. Interstellar was good though. It's going to be a movie with mixed reaction from the audience though (judging by the GAF thread), therefore it won't have those inception legs.
