Damn, A nolan movie not hitting number 1. Fall from grace status begun.

Crazy, I dont even have any desire whatsoever to see interstellar in the theater

Could this be Nolan's "The Village"? Just like it did for Shamaladingdong?
Original sci-fi opening at 50-ish million and 80 overseas? That's pretty great. BH6 was a more sure bet at the BO for sure.

It's not Batman.

Loved Big Hero 6, didn't see Interstellar yet but I'm going to try to catch it soon.

Has to be almost 2x, right? Especially considering they've taken some very obscure franchises mainstream. They know how to adapt material, for damn sure.
Whatsapp 19 billion dollars.

No But it did have Tony Hawk trying to sell the movie in commercials.

I am shocked I did not remember this. And the loved the tree surfing in Tarzan.

Dude's almost as bad as Jett saying this would be Nolan's Heaven's Gate. You know the movie that made 3 million on a 44 million budget.

Why isn't Big Hero 6 a Marvel movie?

This. The opening is great for the type of Scifi the film is. This isn't a shoot-bang type of scifi so it was always going to be a tough sell no matter who was attached to it.

BH6 and Interstellar both making north of $50 mill... There is no loser here.

Interstellar will be under $50M with the actuals, but the $130M worldwide weekend is nice. It should end up in the $550-650M range depending on legs and China.

No they don't. Like not even close.

They're going to buy your favorite football team and move them to Orlando

THE ORLANDO DISNEYS

Yeah, if I was working on Whatsapp, I'd be dancing over that madness. Good lord.

And the tree surfing in Tarzan was baller as fuck.

Why isn't Big Hero 6 a Marvel movie?

It definitely wouldn't fit in the MCU. Hiro's tech is ridiculous and just destroys Stark from a great height.

It's better in animation anyways. It looks fantastic.

Carved out the time to double feature Big Hero 6 followed by Interstellar on Friday. Was a fantastic day at the movies that's for sure!

BH6 played VERY well here, being the bay area and all. I'm happy to see BH6 become it's own thing and deviate from the source material, which wasn't all that strong. Now it's up to marvel to capitalize on the film and hopefully find a way to re-incorporate them into the universe, because I think that could be great.

:O I'm the biggest Disney fan girl ever and still thought Interstellar would win the weekend!

I also then say I'm the biggest fan girl and haven't seen Big Hero 6 yet. :( Tomorrow night after work, though.

buzz around interstellar seems muted. gone girl felt like more of a must-watch, event film release imo. might just be my own bubble though, i'm sure it has more global reach.

Well, it's not, but if we look at Inception, the most similar previous Nolan release in terms of tone and concept... Inception hit 62 million opening weekend.

The decline is noteworthy.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Nintendo would just drag them down. Now Disney and Activision...

Really? How?

Disney and Nintendo is one of the biggest matches made in heaven anyone could even think. There are so many possibilities, on both fronts (movies and games), I'm SHOCKED we haven't seen a substantial collaboration between them yet. I hope something is in the cards, seeing how Nintendo wants to embrace more licensing than in the past. Just saying, gimme that Splatoon tv series, just an example for a brand new IP, not even the classic ones.

I'm actually surprised at the big positive impressions for BH6. It certainly looked really pretty and it was fun, but it felt really flat and kind of generic. Really hope that it gets a sequel that can flesh out the characters more.

Interstellar was flawed, but as a piece of auteur film making it's quite fascinating to watch. It's like so bizarre at times, so many crystalline little pieces to analyze for good or ill. Some shit doesn't make sense, some shit does. It's a really fun film if you're into film analysis/criticism.

But honestly it doesn't matter to me who won between Big Hero 6 and Interstellar, because they're both about the same to me in terms of engagement. I am surprised Interstellar didn't at least do 70 mil

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Next, I would like to answer your question about usage of our cash and deposits. After I announced our intention to more aggressively use our own IP in January (at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing), many people approached us with proposals. During our discussions, we made progress even in fields that we have not deployed our IP in the past. However, we are negotiating these deals with other parties. The appropriate timing to make the announcements does not necessarily fall on the dates of our IR-related events, and today is not the day when we can share with you any concrete examples. I hope you understand that these things are happening behind-the-scenes and that we are also discussing how our cash assets should be used.

You mean why didn't Marvel Studios make it? They have a full enough plate on their schedule as it is.

Next up for Disney... Power Pack.

I would cry tears of joy if that happens.

It's ripe for a film version and I imagine Disney looks at the potential merchandising opportunities and drools.

Formula and franchises dominating is not cool at all.

I was referencing a line from the movie. And my statement is a simplification of my actual thoughts. My Disney and Marvel fanboy sides find it "cool," while my more grounded side finds a single huge company dominating "scary."

Wait what? Both BH6 and Interstellar both cost $165m? How did Nolan pull that off? No wonder the studios love him

I liked both films so this BO doesn't shock me, next week is gonna be the interesting test of "Is Jim Carrey still relevant?"

LOL you realize it's a joke since Solo said Inception might be Nolan's Heaven's Gate years ago and I'm not really being serious about it, right.

Please tell me this is ironic.

I could see a great Kid Icarus movie from Disney Animation.

Nintendo is hard to work with. Someone tried making a Metroid movie years ago and Nintendo wouldn't allow them to develop the story/characters enough because it would be a loss of control over their IP that they were not comfortable with.

Why would Disney want to share their movie revenue? I see Disney doing it if they offer Nintendo a percentage of the net, and use Hollywood accounting to make it a consistent loss. Otherwise I don't see Disney needing more IP to license.
