Star Wars has no shot at Avatar worldwide.

You're wasting your breath.

I just had a friend tell me today that I have no idea what I am talking about because he saw the movie 3 times over the weekend and he NEVER does that with any movie. The movie will be #1 all time no problem.

Then he pointed to the weekend take and I tried explaining to the him the difference in the strength of the dollar today vs. in 2009. Also the fact that Avatar had otherworldly legs.

I was written off as "hating" and told "just wait".

Sigh.

But people also saw Avatar multiple times?

You peeps forgetting that Cameron is picking up the slack that Peter Jackson fucked up.

Avatar sequels gonna be in HFR 3D, laser-projected IMAX.

Well, ryutaro's mama's friend (...what a thing to type) is going to see it multiple multiple times -- that's multiplication! -- and so just you wait, hater, etc

But seriously, no chance at overtaking worldwide.

If you are living in an English speaking country, it probably does seem like Star Wars Ep7 should easily become the highest grossing film of all time WW.

However, even if you give the film a $100M lead domestic and another $100M lead in China (where Avatar has a decent shot at outgrossing Star Wars until we see differently in January), that's still $1.6B to make from the overseas territories currently in play. This weekend was 281M. The film would need a 5.7x multiplier. JW's multiplier was about 3.55x outside of China, and it was a leggy film.

Not going to happen to say the least. Star Wars is absolutely massive in some parts of the world, but Avatar was massive everywhere.

EDIT: Slight Math adjustment. Counted part of China twice.

Titanic's 2-5th weekends were all bigger than its opening weekend.I doubt we will see that again in the near future for a film opening over 25 mil.

Titanic somehow pulled off being the #1 movie each week from December to April. No way in hell that's ever happening again.

Yeah, some of these Titanic records are just insanity and will never be touched.

That being said, I'm looking at the 1998 weekend numbers and 1998 in film in general... and that year was fucking SHIT. Titanic had ZERO competition for that entire run at #1 besides, like... The Wedding Singer. And that wasn't going to take Titanic down.

1998 in general was a shit show, honestly. Besides Saving Private Ryan and a bunch of comedies (Rush Hour, Waterboy, Wedding Singer, Dr. Dolittle, Patch Adams, Truman Show) that year had fuck all quality + box office attractive releases.

With The Force Awakens, you have a Will Smith movie and a Tarantino western full of stars the next WEEK after release. It's not going to take Star Wars down, of course, and I can see Star Wars at #1 until Deadpool and Zoolander 2 drops in February, but at least it's something. 1998 had literally nothing in the way of Titanic's dominance for MONTHS.

First of all, you say that, but the movie that ended the run was Lost in Space.

Second of all, it's not making it to Deadpool. There's a decent chance Ride Along 2 beats it, and if it doesn't it's almost certain that Kung Fu Panda 3 will.

Eh. I didn't see Avatar until 2013. It was on TV. I don't know how I'd missed it for four years, considering I'm such a space nut, but I did.

I liked it a fair bit.

Avatar 2 is coming out a minimum of 8 years after the first one. There's a chance The Gawd recaptures the magic of the first again and makes another 2B.

Looks like early tracking is putting Monday in the $30-35M range.

Even Avatar was down to $31M by the weekend that Kung Fu Panda drops. Star Wars will start falling behind Avatar pretty quickly every weekend after Jan 1-3rd.

I wonder if 13 Hours will recapture some of the audience that made American Sniper such a huge hit in January. Granted, the book for 13 Hours wasn't as big as American Sniper, nor did it have a fantastic trailer like AS did. But, putting another military movie that will fire up the Fox News crowd in January could do rather well.

Granted, I have heard next to nothing about the film and it doesn't seem to have anywhere near the buzz of AS, but I don't think anyone expected AS to put up such a ridiculous showing at the beginning of the year.

I'm watching Avatar right now and you know what, it's better than Force Awakens

By like a fucking country mile

What's everyone's predictions for Benghazi?

I feel like it had a chance at a $100m+ opening weekend, but its legs won't carry it much past $250m.

Nah boss, if it was bait I'd make a thread

But people shitting on Avatar for not being original when Force Awakens is as close to a goddamn remake as humanly possible need to get checked

Something the size of Lone Survivor would likely be more than enough to take Star Wars' 5th weekend.

Act of Valor, Lone Survivor and American Sniper were all over performers, even if Sniper was the only film to get some sort of box office critical mass going. That's 3 years running for modern military films doing well in Winter.

1.5B DOM
1.3B OS
2.8B WW

I have seen it 3 times. Avatar falls, Cameron cries, balance is restored.

I have only seen each movie once, so they are clearly destined to tie

That is nice to post a gif from the film that is better than both Avatar and Force Awakens.

Damn. Forgot about Lone Survivor and Act of Valor. I guess it was just the sheer size of Sniper's opening that got my attention. Thank you.

Is there some kinda Holy Trinity of Films on GAF that people love to talk about? Avatar, Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Rises?

Hey, Lost in Space was basically the Star Trek 2009 of the 90s! That's a blockbuster... >_>

And yeah, I can see Ride Along 2 or Kung Fu Panda 3 knocking it off #1. But that's my point. The competition now is way stronger than it was back then.

It's not going to get any better. Disney, WB, and Fox are popping out so many superhero films that they are going to have to start sticking them in January soon to make room.

If they were to break the Thursday previews out and count them as Thursday, then Force Awakens would finally break Revenge of the Sith's record for largest Thursday gross ever.

But of course, without those Thursday numbers lumped into the weekend, then Force Awakens would not have the opening weekend record.

Stick them in September so we can finally have a monster opening in that month.

Titanic >>> The Force Awakens >= Avatar

Avatar has better action scenes and is just a less problematic script. But i don't give a shit about EYWAAAAA or those ugly ass aliens. Whereas in star wars I'm anxious to see more of the characters. Abrams has hit his peak though, it's clear by now that he'll never be a great director imo (not a knock or anything, but he just can't seem to break that ceiling)

and Creed >>>>>> all 3 of them. I don't even have to hesitate on that one, retreads a formula much like force awakens but does it better.

I don't give a fuuuuck about any of the characters in Star Wars, so flip that and I'm good.

Creed isn't even the best "7th entry in a beloved series that is a quasi remake/retelling of the original beloved movie" of the year ;)

Creed keeps the formula, but it's not that similar to OG Rocky. Force Awakens is literally freaking the same movie.

That's great and all, but that might be the same as a terrible game with great graphics. Avatar brought in huge money on a very mundane product. Avatar 2 won't get by that easily.

Is September typically the lowest grossing month?

By far.

This September was the best ever at ~$625M. The last time January was that low was 1999.

January actually has a better average gross than Feb-Apr, and Sept-Oct. It's about on par with August or November thanks to X-mas holdovers and wide expansions of awards bait.

We have had three movies come out this year that are the 7th entry in their series and they have all performed well at the box office.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

There was an article on Deadline stating that the film may surprise people and heard rumblings that it's actually quite good, plus Act of Valor and The Lone Ranger all performed well too in a similar time frame so I think it has a good shot of doing well.

Watch Rocky again. Creed is preeeeeeeeeeeeeetty fucking similar. Not quite as close as TFA -> ANH, but almost.

I like that shit, though. Rocky and Star Wars are timeless classics. Retelling those stories for a modern audience is the right thing to do, especially in the case of Star Wars which was coming off three of the shittiest movies ever.

To be fair, nothing in Force Awakens is as stupid as Avatar's 'I totally pissed off everyone, BUT OH SHIT I BROUGHT YOU GUYS THIS COOL BIRD'

I've watched Rocky like eight times in the past month, I know goddamn well they're similar. Creed approaches things in a far different manner and the characters are completely different. Force Awakens is almost exactly the same.
