Didn't Yo-Kai Watch beat Force Awakens?
Yokai sold more tickets, but Star Wars made more money. Yokai wasn't 3D or Imax.

Star Wars has no shot at Avatar worldwide.
You're wasting your breath.
I just had a friend tell me today that I have no idea what I am talking about because he saw the movie 3 times over the weekend and he NEVER does that with any movie. The movie will be #1 all time no problem.
Then he pointed to the weekend take and I tried explaining to the him the difference in the strength of the dollar today vs. in 2009. Also the fact that Avatar had otherworldly legs.
I was written off as "hating" and told "just wait".
Sigh.
But people also saw Avatar multiple times?

Titanic's 2-5th weekends were all bigger than its opening weekend.I doubt we will see that again in the near future for a film opening over 25 mil.
Titanic somehow pulled off being the #1 movie each week from December to April. No way in hell that's ever happening again.
Its the kind of movie you have to watch in a theater to enjoy. Watching at home just feels so meh...
Avatar needs to be watched in IMAX 3D.
Yeah. I don't even think it's a very good movie but seeing it in IMAX was spectacular. Best theatrical experience I've had.
Yeah, some of these Titanic records are just insanity and will never be touched.
That being said, I'm looking at the 1998 weekend numbers and 1998 in film in general... and that year was fucking SHIT. Titanic had ZERO competition for that entire run at #1 besides, like... The Wedding Singer. And that wasn't going to take Titanic down.
1998 in general was a shit show, honestly. Besides Saving Private Ryan and a bunch of comedies (Rush Hour, Waterboy, Wedding Singer, Dr. Dolittle, Patch Adams, Truman Show) that year had fuck all quality + box office attractive releases.
With The Force Awakens, you have a Will Smith movie and a Tarantino western full of stars the next WEEK after release. It's not going to take Star Wars down, of course, and I can see Star Wars at #1 until Deadpool and Zoolander 2 drops in February, but at least it's something. 1998 had literally nothing in the way of Titanic's dominance for MONTHS.
First of all, you say that, but the movie that ended the run was Lost in Space.
Second of all, it's not making it to Deadpool. There's a decent chance Ride Along 2 beats it, and if it doesn't it's almost certain that Kung Fu Panda 3 will.
So...don't bother with Avatar...got it.

I'm watching Avatar right now and you know what, it's better than Force Awakens
By like a fucking country mile

I wonder if 13 Hours will recapture some of the audience that made American Sniper such a huge hit in January. Granted, the book for 13 Hours wasn't as big as American Sniper, nor did it have a fantastic trailer like AS did. But, putting another military movie that will fire up the Fox News crowd in January could do rather well.
Granted, I have heard next to nothing about the film and it doesn't seem to have anywhere near the buzz of AS, but I don't think anyone expected AS to put up such a ridiculous showing at the beginning of the year.
1.5B DOM
1.3B OS
2.8B WW
I have seen it 3 times. Avatar falls, Cameron cries, balance is restored.
Something the size of Lone Survivor would likely be more than enough to take Star Wars' 5th weekend.
Act of Valor, Lone Survivor and American Sniper were all over performers, even if Sniper was the only film to get some sort of box office critical mass going. That's 3 years running for modern military films doing well in Winter.
Nah boss, if it was bait I'd make a thread
But people shitting on Avatar for not being original when Force Awakens is as close to a goddamn remake as humanly possible need to get checked
Eh.
Titanic is better than TFA though.
That is nice to post a gif from the film that is better than both Avatar and Force Awakens.
Creed fanboy here
when will the gimmick posting end

Hey, Lost in Space was basically the Star Trek 2009 of the 90s! That's a blockbuster... >_>
And yeah, I can see Ride Along 2 or Kung Fu Panda 3 knocking it off #1. But that's my point. The competition now is way stronger than it was back then.
It's not going to get any better. Disney, WB, and Fox are popping out so many superhero films that they are going to have to start sticking them in January soon to make room.

I only speak truth
Like how Creed is the best movie of the year, please believe

Fixed. Is there some kinda Holy Trinity of Films on GAF that people love to talk about? Avatar, Mad Max Fury Road and The Dark Knight Rises?

They are only brought up to point out how shitty they all are.
Titanic >>> The Force Awakens >= Avatar
Avatar has better action scenes and is just a less problematic script. But i don't give a shit about EYWAAAAA or those ugly ass aliens. Whereas in star wars I'm anxious to see more of the characters. Abrams has hit his peak though, it's clear by now that he'll never be a great director imo.
Creed isn't even the best "7th entry in a beloved series that is a quasi remake/retelling of the original beloved movie" of the year
Nah.
That's great and all, but that might be the same as a terrible game with great graphics. Avatar brought in huge money on a very mundane product. Avatar 2 won't get by that easily. You peeps forgetting that Cameron is picking up the slack that Peter Jackson fucked up.
Avatar sequels gonna be in HFR 3D, laser-projected IMAX.
No you didn't, there is no movie with more threads than MoS.. well, maybe TFAFixed.
Is September typically the lowest grossing month?
Sources tell me MON heading to mid 30s for #StarWarsTheForceAwakens. All-time high for a MON. Cume would surge to about $285M.

Creed keeps the formula, but it's not that similar to OG Rocky. Force Awakens is literally freaking the same movie.
Watch Rocky again. Creed is preeeeeeeeeeeeeetty fucking similar. Not quite as close as TFA -> ANH, but almost.
I like that shit, though. Rocky and Star Wars are timeless classics. Retelling those stories for a modern audience is the right thing to do, especially in the case of Star Wars which was coming off three of the shittiest movies ever.
