Titanic's 2-5th weekends were all bigger than its opening weekend.I doubt we will see that again in the near future for a film opening over 25 mil.
My mom saw the movie a dozen times. I mean literally a dozen times.
No way that ever happens again.

Half of the first movies gross seems like a decent estimate. Cameron is still Cameron.Completely agree; unless people suddenly care about 3D again. I must have heard 20 people I know rave about the movie without saying a single thing... about the movie. Nor have I ever seen the film really influence culture in any way.
Amazing 3D could do really well but I don't think Avatar 1 well.
Should be interesting to see if Avatar 2 matches Avatar 1 on the BO front.
It won't unless Cameron pulls a new technological paradigm out from somewhere.
Yes, way more, approx 30% more.Titanic also likely sold considerably more tickets than Avatar ever did. It was pretty crazy.
forbes says otherwise?

I wont argue it might not be a big deal there. I dont know the India market at all.
People won't admit it now but when that Avatar 2 trailer drops, they will want to revisit Pandora again.
Cameron never disappoints, Cameron is Cameron 🙌

That's not how it works! When the trailer comes out, we first have to make fun of it for some stupid looking design, and then we need to talk about how Cameron has clearly lost it. Only when the movie is actually close to release will we start to realize that he is about to dominate everyone again. Even then, there will be doubt, and when it opens it'll probably be "LOL IT DIDN'T EVEN SET ANY RECORDS!"
I hope Avatar 2 isn't still planned to be largely underwater. Underwater + image darkening 3D sounds like the absolute worst thing.
The emerging markets currencies (Latin American and Asia) dive against the US do not really help Starwar's box office at all.
For example our Thai Baht had taken 12% dive against USD in only just 4 months.

I really need to watch Avatar someday.
Its the kind of movie you have to watch in a theater to enjoy. Watching at home just feels so meh...
Yeah. I don't even think it's a very good movie but seeing it in IMAX was spectacular. Best theatrical experience I've had.Avatar needs to be watched in IMAX 3D.
I doubted Avatar and even disliked the movie! All the trailers looked so bad back then.
So bad.
I went with my friends and they pointed out the designs were lifted from lord Krishna .. basically the same meh reactions.I remember going to one of those "Avatar Day" free 3D preview teaser screenings and it was so empty and the designs were so weird that I thought it would be the hardest sell ever. The tech was great, but it just had bomb written all over it.
Just shows that I don't know shit about the true power of Cameron!
Avatar needs to be watched in IMAX 3D.
Asia didn't seem to really grasp onto The Force Awakens anyhow. Here are the notable opening weekends vs Age of Ultron earlier in the year:
Code:The Force Awakens Age of Ultron Furious 7 Jurassic World Hong Kong $3.6M $6.4M $2.5M $4.2M Malaysia $2.9M $5.0M $5.7M $5.6M Philppines $4.0M $7.4M $2.1M $5.5M Singapore $2.6M $3.6M $2.8M $3.6M South Korea $8.0M $23.0M $6.9M $12.4M Taiwan $2.4M $5.3M $6.6M $8.2M Thailand $1.7M $4.2M $4.2M $3.8M
EDIT: I threw in Furious 7 and Jurassic World as well. Japan is omitted since it has tastes that don't really follow the rest of the countries in east Asia (Big on Star Wars. Hate Superhero films. Furious 7 wasn't anything special, etc.
I think all of this should make people cautious about China's potential.
Isn't a lot of that simply due to the exchange rate? For example, in the Summer the Singapore dollar was worth almost 0.76 USD at the peak, and now it's at like 0.70 USD. In terms of actual performance, Star Wars is most definitely not doing worse than Ultron here.

So weird how much Cameron and AHBUHDAR is mentioned in a thread about 2015 December movies.
That's not a big enough change to make much of a difference. If you adjust the currency it would be $2.6M TFA vs $3.3M AoU (pretty much the percentage difference between Star Wars' domestic opening and Age of Ultron's domestic opening, but in reverse). And that was by far the closest two.
Hmmmmmm. I dunno. It's probably just personal anecdote creating a bias here but I just don't feel like Ultron doing way better than Star Wars reflects the reality of what I'm seeing. General excitement, sold out screenings when I'm booking tickets, merchadising being eaten up everywhere. It's so weird. :/
You live in Singapore?

Yes, way more, approx 30% more.
Is Cameron still going to use HFR or was it 72fps for Avatar 2? That is what I'm most looking forward to. I think HFR can be good. Too bad it was attached to the crap The Hobbit trilogy.
Why aren't records based on tickets sales alone? Would make much more sense.
He's the only one with movies over $2bn so of course he'll be brought up.
Yeah.
It's a little confounding for me. I haven't bothered to do much research to see if December legs are great for Asian releases (outside of Japan, anyway) too, but a cursory look at the Hobbit films doesn't suggest so. I still think $1.5 billion overseas could happen based on the sheer strength its showing on Europe and others, but anything more than that is gonna be very difficult if China doesn't buck this trend.Asia didn't seem to really grasp onto The Force Awakens anyhow. Ya, I'm not sure why it would feel different than what the numbers suggest. I checked to see if AoU opened on a Tuesday or something like it did in China, but it opened on Thursday. Same as Star Wars.

Didn't Yo-Kai Watch beat Force Awakens?
