I'll change my avatar if it happens.
By that, I assume you mean you're changing it to this:

Hopefully Godzilla will make it so that Star Wars miraculously breaks the domestic record, but still falls behind Jurassic World worldwide.

Amen.

Not including merchandising, I have a feeling that JW will be more profitable than SW when all is said and done.

58% male audience for Star Wars is a decent split, IMO. It seemed like something that'd skew closer to 70/30 to me. 58/42 isn't totally awful.

I'm curious if this weird weekend controversy that seems to be simultaneously miseducating and popularizing the old "mary sue" bullshit will lead to some increased interest from people who otherwise might not have sought it out.

Or if it's just weird weekend internet bullshit that nobody will really remember by Tuesday.

We'll find out in a couple of weeks!

Pretty crazy that Disney wasn't able to get it out in China this year. Is there something else in Chinese theaters that took priority? I'd have to assume it would have to be a local film.
They're limited in the amount of foreign films they can show each year

So basically just bullshit all around! Sounds about right.

This, and it puts the release just under a month before the Chinese New Year. Being the big release still in theaters might give it some additional legs.

Or
they thought Finn was the main character.

Well sure, maybe a few, but the box office story pales in comparison to people just celebrating the movie itself

I know that part, but I was curious as to whether or not that there simply was not a slot for them to grab due to other reasons. The film getting so close to the WW OW record without China is really fucking crazy.

Pretty sure it's official. I mean just look at it. Screams official.

I know you're being sarcastic but there is a history of Studios doing congratulations to other films that break the opening weekend record, going all the way back to the days of the original star wars

Does this mean $700 million domestic is possible?

Box Office Mojo says:

Based on averages over the past couple of years, a 3-3.5 multiplier doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility, which would put the domestic run somewhere around $714-833 million.

So it should be probable, if not possible. But considering they (and others) seem to be using Deathly Hallows 2 as the measuring stick, it's possible that the film could play like a Summer movie and have relatively short legs.

But it seems the WOM, and the fact its next two Fridays are Christmas Day and New Year's Day seems to point towards the 3-3.5x as being the safer bet.

That is the first poster for Chipmunks I've seen that doesn't reuse the same renders they've been using since the first film. I will commend them on that alone.

Please catch Avatar. I'd much rather have Star Wars be Number 1.

Also, fuck Alvin. Call me when we get a Melvin and the Squirrels film.

No there isn't.

There's a history of directors congratulating each other for breaking the all time worldwide record.

Marvel just wanted to make opening weekend an important thing they can draw people's attention to.

Did James Cameron congratulate himself after Avatar beat Titanic?

Pretty much most of the JW's records will be gone, except the non-opening Tuesday (depends on where TFA's Monday lands). It will have the summer and June opening records for now. edit - as well as Sat (depending on TFA actuals) and Sun grosses.

For Avatar, the domestic, Rated PG-13 total gross, third weekend and New Year's could be up for grabs. The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh seem safe.

How much did JW gross from just China on its opening?

100.1 million.

Even if SW isn't huge there, China being included in SW opening numbers would have crushed JW. We'll never know exactly though, also unclear how it releasing next month there will ultimately affect things.

will the China number for Star Wars be retroactively added to the worldwide opening weekend number?

I mean, it is still an opening weekend, it's just not simultaneous with a bunch of other territories.

Nope, they do it by date not totaling up worldwide openings (which would make more sense and is more interesting)
