Well deserved success for TFA. I thought the movie was fantastic. Not that budget was ever in doubt, but I'm glad the success guarantees Disney/Lucasfilm will be able to do whatever they want.

I need to see it at least a couple more times, but I'm pretty sure it's in my Top 3 movies for the year. Up there with AoU, Jurassic and Straight Out of Compton.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
TBF Avatar Land was something they had planned before the unexpected Star Wars purchase. You might wonder if they wouldn't have made a "Fauna of Star Wars" land instead.

Nah, Star Wars belongs at Epcot not Animal Kingdom, and Bob Iger had spoken to George Lucas way before the purchase mentioning he'd be interested when the time comes - so it was just a matter of when, not if.

One thing about Star Wars is there's so much more merch potential. You can buy lightsabers, you can buy costumes, etc. There's a million different aliens, background characters, ships, etc. With Avatar, the Navi are basically naked and they use stone-age weapons. Not gonna get kids very excited with that.
I believe Cameron knows this, and makes sure Avatar 2 will be more toyetic than the original. He did the same with T2.

I'm sure buying Star Wars was in the pipeline way before they signed the deal for Avatar.

Nope. Disney had already closed the deal to get the Avatar parks in spring 2011 when Lucas dropped a hint at breakfast that he was looking to sell Lucasfilm, too. The negotiations to get Pandora had been going on for awhile before Iger was even aware Lucas was looking to get out the game.

The Lucasfilm deal didn't actually go forward until the following year.

So 38.1M wednesday.

International was updated with $38m as well.

Domestic: $363,538,146
+ Foreign: $402,400,000
= Worldwide: $765,938,146

I've never seen a movie getting daily international updates. The box office hype is crazy. And this thread, with its one subject a day trend...

If the domestic take can more or less keep pace with international and they both make it to a billion(minus China) it should be able to pass Titanic.

Okay, THAT is interesting. Curious to see how much larger the numbers on the left-hand column could grow between now and mid-January.

Granted, I don't think Sith is regarded as having done all that well overseas, so topping its International numbers probably isn't all that big an achievement, is it?

So after six days of release, it's already #60 on the all time list, and will be deep into the top 20 the end of the weekend.

Bananas.

I remember its domestic total was seen as pretty impressive at the time, overseas was typical prequel.

What does ROTS stand for?

Is it normal for the international gross to mirror the domestic one so closely like this? Yesterday both were $41M and today both were $38M.

US=world?

Looked for Jurassic World numbers worldwide.

By Sunday:

JW: $525m
TFA: $529m (+ $5m)

By Wednesday:

JW: $690m
TFA: $765m (+ $75m)

In three days Star Wars gained $70 million over Jurassic World. Unlimited box office power.

To be fair most of the big successes she's in would have been big successes without her. She's fine as an actress and I like her overall but I doubt most people who watched Avatar, Star Trek, Guardians Of The Galaxy and anything else she's in were interested due to her involvement.

That's totally unfair. You can say that about every actor in all of those movies then.

Yeah, if the new leads didn't click, the film would not be resonating or have such legs. Star Wars is what made it open this wide, but they're a part of the legs.

Man if this thing grosses $160-170M on its second weekend i dont think we'll see a domestic run like this a veeeeery long time. History will probably prove me wrong though.

Do you think Chris Pratt is the reason why GotG was a success and Jurassic World became the third top grossing movie of all time for half a year.

Nope! But I would feel dirty trying to take credit away from him also. I don't think you could just throw any ol' person in their for GoTG or Jurassic World to be huge hits.

Oh I most certainly agree, she is perfect for the role, point is I don't think replacing Zoe Saldana in the movies mentioned before would change much of the gross. Or replacing Chris Pratt for another wisecracking white male. Or replacing Sam Worthington in Avatar with anyone, really. Most of these movies rode to records on brand name/brand recognition/JC BO magic pixie dust, not on star power. Half a year ago some people said JW became a success thank to Chris Pratt and that I think is insanity and exactly like saying TFA broke records thanks to Daisy Ridley (Again, not to deride her work here!). When even RotS took the domestic crown in 2005 and I don't think Hayden Christensen was a reason it was one of the highest grossing movies of the decade.
