I have no frame of reference for these daily totals -- I assume TFA is breaking records left and right, but what's the total projection looking to be? #3 all-time?

Domestic or worldwide? Domestic it will be #1 pretty easily at this point. Worldwide probably #3, maybe #2.

#1 all-time domestically. $1 billion dollars domestically and Titanic-plus numbers worldwide are still in play.

It will be the top domestic earner ever, but is unlikely to top Avatar's world wide take. But we'll have a much better picture on that after this weekend.

Problem is WB is going to see their great films in 2015 failing to light the world on fire yet see stuff standard franchise material like BvS and the Harry Potter spin-off do great next year.

They won't be green-lighting 2015 type of films any time soon after that. Oh well.
The only thing I can see pushing WB towards fast tracking another Mad Max is if it does well at the oscars, and even then it's a long shot. If only 2015 had been a better year for them...

Is TFA the most expensive movie to ever be made?

It certainly felt like it...

200 million production budget
200 million marketing budget rumored

They need 1 bln worldwide in merchandise and box office to break even

Considering that they have made 813 million in world wide box office alone they have likely already broken even and rest is profit

I don't think so. I think one of the Pirates movies or some such takes that honor.
They didn't seem to spend a lot of the actors' salaries in this movie. The visuals and the amount of sets and the amount of action is in this movie is not like anything I have ever seen before.

Reminds me of Empire Strikes back when it first came out...

Budget wise not really, but the marketing probably is one of the biggest in history

Disney's marketing budget was actually lower than a lot of their other films. They knew they didn't need to go too crazy given the awareness and cross marketing. Most Star Wars ads were from tie ins rather than the film.

With just a week and a half left until the film’s debut, one might wonder just how much Disney has spent on advertising so far. Although the company has not released a budget, sources close to the matter told the Wall Street Journal that the expenses, as the newspaper summarizes, are “slightly lower than what studios typically put into would-be blockbusters.”

Tie-ins with a host of other brands are buoying interest in the series on behalf of Disney as well. Seven official partnering companies, like Verizon and Proctor & Gamble, have contributed $38 million in direct advertising, according to the Journal and iSpot.tv. And other companies such as Walmart and Electronic Arts have indirectly added another $51 million by selling products blazoned with the franchise’s name. (That’s to say nothing of the press attention, too.)

Good time to own Disney stock, I'd say.

Not really. Some recent ESPN issues have really taken a hit on its stock as of late. ESPN is still the biggest piece of the Disney pie, bigger than Marvel, Lucasfilm, Walt Disney Pictures,....etc so what goes on with ESPN overshadows the rest of Disney.

The marketing budget might be, but production budget no. I think the fourth Pirates movie is still the biggest as it cost over $400m.
I feel like the marketing budget might be more normal than we think, especially since a lot of the marketing was accompanied by deals with third party companies.

Have they given any official numbers on Spectre yet? It's officially listed as $245 million, but I remember reports saying $300+ million excluding marketing due to production issues.

OS numbers will be lower for 24th and 25th I guess due to Christmas but once the second weekend comes, oh boy.

Does Christmas Day not get the same boost overseas as it does in North America?

I think 25th is much more important in Europe than in the US and is mostly spent with family, but I might be projecting. Mostly guessing this based on how much bigger the drop for 24th is.

The marketing budget seems big until you realize that 3/4th of the commercials you've seen for Star Wars are actually commercials for something else. When I went to see Creed last week, I saw three different Star Wars commercials for other products before the movie. Disney doesn't pay for any of that cross-marketing stuff.

Pirates did look spectacular as well.

It's subjective but to me this looked better.

My wife said the same thing and she is not a Star Wars fan.

Cinemas don't even open in the UK on Xmas Day as far as I'm aware. Everyone just sits around the house with their family watching Christmas TV or playing games. I've certainly never heard of anyone even entertaining the idea of going to the cinema on Xmas Day here.

I believe I'd heard somewhere that of the marketing budget, Disney itself only had to shell out something like 90-100 million, and the rest of the marketing was ameliorated by companies who paid to get in on the tie-in train.

Oh, and a Happy Christmas to everyone, and I hope you have a hell of a day.

I posted about the marketing budget earlier this page. No hard figures but Disney intentionally spent less than they do on big movies, with their licensing partners picking up the slack. For example on TV:

Movie studios routinely invest $50 million in marketing upcoming releases in the United States and a little more abroad, the Journal notes, with most of that amount devoted to television.

So far, Disney had doled out about $17 million on TV ads, the Journal reports, citing data from the research firm iSpot.tv that extends through midday Monday, although the firm said it expects that figure to ramp up in the home stretch. For comparison, movie studios pushing other films with high ad budgets, such as Mad Max and Mission Impossible, spent about $30 million, or about twice as much, the Journal said, citing the same database.

TFA had a ~$200m budget and a lower than usual marketing budget. Disney played their cards right.

Shit, I'm sorry. You absolutely did, I skidded right over.

First post on Christmas and I botched it. I did just get out of the Peanuts Movie second run, guess I brought a little Charlie Brown in here with me.

Wasn't aimed right at you, it was an ongoing discussion and everyone jumped over it. :lol

Just wanted to point folks at the link. I really though Disney would go overboard with the marketing, but they realized they didn't have to. Pretty savvy call.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Good man. I took my niece to that on Wednesday. My favorite kids movie of the year, probably. It's just done so well.

Still haven't seen Good Dinosaur (that'll happen this winter break) but I wouldn't put it over Inside Out, personally. The Red Baron stuff went on a little too long - but whaddya gonna do. It's Snoopy. You kinda have to, I guess. But man, did Blue Sky absolutely nail the aesthetics of those old specials/movies, while adding their own style to the mix. It never once felt like anyone involved had missed the point or misunderstood why Charlie Brown works.

It didn't do all that well at the box-office, but I absolutely see it becoming one of those sleeper classics where, in like, 3 or 4 years, everyone's got a copy, and everyone busts it out for Christmas, and we all wonder why we skipped out on it in theaters when we had the chance.

Nuts, I forgot to see that. I'll see if it's still playing around here tomorrow.

Thanks for the link vinnygambini, that figure is right in line with what the WSJ reported: Disney spent ~$30 on TV advertising, with their partners adding 2x that over again. Disney is making just crazy money on TFA.
