happy holidays gaf friends! here's to star wars making another $60 million today

$450 million domestic in 7 days.

unreal

edit: Noticing today that the trade writers are starting to sneak the qualifier "not adjusting for inflation" into their reporting. So that's all sorts of fun and useless. Can't wait for those passages to get quoted and italicized in a week or so.

Does Christmas Day not get the same boost overseas as it does in North America?

Adding to what others have said, here in Belgium it'd be pretty weird to go to the cinema on Christmas Day. Everyone has brunch/dinner with their family.

Still haven't seen Good Dinosaur (that'll happen this winter break) but I wouldn't put it over Inside Out, personally. The Red Baron stuff went on a little too long - but whaddya gonna do. It's Snoopy. You kinda have to, I guess. But man, did Blue Sky absolutely nail the aesthetics of those old specials/movies, while adding their own style to the mix. It never once felt like anyone involved had missed the point or misunderstood why Charlie Brown works.

It didn't do all that well at the box-office, but I absolutely see it becoming one of those sleeper classics where, in like, 3 or 4 years, everyone's got a copy, and everyone busts it out for Christmas, and we all wonder why we skipped out on it in theaters when we had the chance.

I liked Inside Out, but Peanuts is just so, so good. The Snoopy stuff does drag but I can get over it. They absolutely nailed Charlie Brown.

Box office is eh, but I'm sure it'll do just fine on home video.

And leave that goddamn short off of it

Nuts, I forgot to see that. I'll see if it's still playing around here tomorrow.

Get on that!

I wonder how much those trade writers realize just how far up the adjusted list TFA is going, and how quickly the odds of it becoming the highest grossing initial run even adjusted for inflation are increasing.

Good man. I took my niece to that on Wednesday. My favorite kids movie of the year, probably. It's just done so well.

I wanted to see Peanuts, but I could only swing one trip to the movies in November, so my sister and niece went to see it while I watched The Martian. My niece liked it even though she has no prior Peanuts history.

Before the weekend is over, Star Wars will have passed Harry Potter as the second highest grossing film franchise of all time, second only to the MCU.

It won't pass it worldwide with this movie, but it's bound to happen over the next few years, even with Fantastic Beasts coming out.

Merry xmas everyone! I will have to catch up on the thread later. I see that it is now longer than Bobby's guess from a couple weeks back.

How much we expecting tonight? $50M? $60M? It's about 70 degrees in NY today.

Weather won't matter too much. Take Thursday and double it, then add 3m or so to that and you have a decent estimate of Friday.

Sooo...

Right now TFA has six biggest single December days of all time. With this weekend it will cover 9 out of 10 biggest single day grosses for December.

Can legs miraculous enough happen for it to make over 38 mil this Monday?

That much on Christmas Day? Aren't most theaters in the US closed (I really don't know because I don't pay attention)?

Still crazy it outperformed Avatar on Christmas Eve. Knowing that Christmas Day had the 3rd highest advanced ticket sales behind the opening days, before the movie even released, this should be a massive weekend.

No don't think so. My family and I go to a movie on Christmas almost all of the time. Theaters are usually packed out when we go.

Hey I'm going there too this evening! I've never been yet but I keep hearing great things about it.

Christmas is one of the busiest days of the year for movie theaters. Closing on Christmas would be the equivalent of Best Buy being closed on black friday.

I just went up to my theater to get tickets tonight for 7:30. This theater is nothing special just the local one but it's pretty big. Parking lot was damn near full at 2pm and saw plenty of people walking in. I wonder if it'll be just as busy later.

Just curious, how high domestically would TFA have to go to make up for its expected softer OS gross and challenge Avatar WW?
It depends a lot on how well things go in China. There's definite pessimism based on performance in Asian countries outside of Japan, so the odds of a $300+M gross there are pretty low. IMO to have a chance at the WW record, it needs at least $1.2 Billion domestically, which is not unreasonable at the moment. The performance today will tells us more.

deadline increased their weekend expectations to 170-180 lol

I have a feeling xmas day grosses aren't going to come in as expected

Christmas Day in the UK is probably more equivalent to Thanksgiving Day in the states. Everyone eats turkey and spends all day with the family. No shops/cinemas are open apart from our equivalent to 7/11s.

Deadline saying 170-180 for the weekend...

I feel like this prediction would have been believable for the opening weekend. lol

What's funny about that is, if it happens, there were people in that Ultron vs Star Wars thread that had guessed Star Wars wouldn't even do those kind of numbers last weekend! For it to pull that off the second weekend is rally something.

No moviegoing here for today. Just staying home and relaxing. Wife just put a chicken to roast, so dinner is hours away. But we do plan to hit Star Wars again next week.

It's ok ukgaf, I think it's kinda weird to go to the movies on Christmas too. It's apparently a really popular thing to do though

Actually, on thanksgiving in the US everyone abandons their family around 5 pm to line up at stores that start black Friday on Thursday evening. So we spend like half a day with our family.

Jeez...Star Wars about to break the opening weekend box office record for december....in its second weekend.

This movie is doing so good it doesn't even make sense anymore.

It's definitely becoming a cultural experience the same way Avatar was. People are going to see it because they feel like everyone else is. It's more of an event than another movie. My parents are going to see it tomorrow and I'm pretty sure the last time they went to a theater was when I dragged them out to see Gravity over two years ago.
