WSJ: NX will be "compatible with" Nintendo's Mobile games, is handheld/console hybrid

It'd be great if Miitomo was the basis for Mii customization for the entire system. It's cool that they're adding a bunch of clothes and hats and stuff to it but it'd be grat to actually use that stuff in more places.

Can't take credit for this, my skeptical buddy Geo pointed it out..

The WSJ article says "compatible with" as opposed to "plays," so I'm not sure if that's significant or not. Can't think of what else that would mean, other than maybe connecting to a smart phone app to track something like friends performance or leaderboards?

All intents and purposes, it sounds like a huge step for Nintendo in allowing mobile games/apps to be played on NX (if true)!

That's exactly what My Nintendo is for, and Nintendo has already promised that AC Mobile will connect with the mainline games on dedicated platforms (though they didn't specify which - presumably New Leaf first and NX later).

they've talked about having their mobile games hook into their console/handheld games for a while now, haven't they? I don't think there will be 1:1 ports of all their mobile games on this thing.

You know what scare me?
If the "cheap" mobile Fire Emblem, etc... Game sells/makes good money across NX and mobile... Why should they put efforts on a proper sequel?

As I said in the other thread: "Compatible with" is vague wording. It could just mean My Nintendo integration, say, between AC Mobile and AC NX.

That said, I'm not ruling ports out, as there's obviously no reason why the NX hybrid couldn't run the mobile games themselves (not counting Pokemon Go, which would be unplayable without 4G/LTE Internet), but the idea seems weird and pointless given that those games are designed first and foremost for platforms much friendlier to pick-up-and-play gameplay.

I think the obvious point would be that Nintendo's own hardware is the only place to play all of Nintendo's games and it's the definitive way to play Nintendo's games.

Actually I think it would be pretty weird for their to be Nintendo games you can't play on Nintendo hardware, especially if it's more than technically capable of running them.

I already don't want to play phone games on an actual phone let alone a TV. Hopefully compatible means talks to and not plays

Dangerous game we are playing here. I hope they don't announce a "mobile first" mentality.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but considering Nintendo's involvement with the development of their mobile games has been fleeting at best to date, I don't think it's something they're ready to rely on just yet.

What I can totally see is a situation where the mobile app not only complements but makes the premium game + hardware which Nintendo does create and does make a lot of money from exponentially more desirable as a purchase. Catch Pokémon in Pokémon GO, import them into your flashy, expansive RPG experience on your dedicated Nintendo hardware.

As more of this stuff comes out or gets reported on, it continues to seem like a bad idea to have not announced it at e3, or at least some point already.

You can't get this close to release without officially revealing a single thing about it, without stuff leaking, or reports causing misinformation or w/e. You'd think they would want to unveil this sort of information themselves

This may have been a controlled leak to reset expectations before reveal. If you had revealed this to a bunch of maniacs expecting PS neo performance reaction would have been insane negative. Now the vocal online fans and media know what to expect and the games can be what blows us away.

Also, compatible with does not necessarily mean 'plays'.

I'm not sure the Wall Street Journal has ever been wrong on video game rumors.

Thank you for the edit to the OP and title. Much appreciated!

(BTW, what does "done and dusted" mean in this context, Inhunanyou? I'd thought that phrase meant "debunked.")

HYPE!

So this will eventually play " mobile app versions" of 3rd party games like Square-enix?

Ugh. I hope that doesn't mean they're expecting contracts or anything else silly for the NX. I'm not giving up my current smartphone and I'm sure as heck not paying twice.

If this is true Nintendo would be out of their minds to not support mobile internet on this.

It would be too expensive and unnecessary. Everyone has smartphones which they can use to create wifi hotspots if necessary on the go.

As the thread title is updated, I should note that this article is from the same reporter, Takashi Mochizuki, who wrote the "industry-leading chips" story last fall. Which seems to have been true, just not in the way some wanted it to be.

These words are chosen too carefully, feels like a riddle. When the NX is revealed they'll only be technically correct.

Why would anyone really expect otherwise, other than maybe lacking a touchscreen/gyroscope for some of the games if they absolutely need those

You're right. Hmm. Well, if they are playable, though, I presume it will confirm a touchscreen. I guess otherwise one might not make much sense. The screen per EU won't be part of any default at-home controller, and on the go if you're using buttons to play there may be no need to touch the screen.

Then again, Nintendo has shown such an affinity for touchscreen interfaces, so it's hard to imagine it disappearing.....

It means complete, finished, confirmed, 100%.

Grazie, amigo!

You're asking the same question that people do about spin offs.

The main answer is "they still make money making the main thing"

The sheer amount of shovelware for this system will be of epic proportions.

I do hope there's a vetting system.

Also I wonder if this has DeNA's workmanship on it.

Considering how much people use their smartphones for data instead of phone calls, I'm wondering if Nintendo's "out of left field" play is to deploy a device that has cellular data service but isn't a phone.
The Vita did this too.

It's possible.

In another thread someone asked in the OP about it possibly playing mobile games. Vita also did this.

Guess this mean capacitive screen, bye bye resistive. Hopefully.

Powered by Android.

You can even make calls! exclusive of AT&T.

It also has access to millions of apps on Google Play Store

Basically the Nintendo xPhone

Did you read the OP as "the NX exclusively plays phone games" or what? It's presumably still getting Dragon Quest XII, Zelda, Sonic Not-Generations, etc.

I know it won't happen due to cost and other factors but at this point I wish they would just go all the way and drop a bomb in September and reveal that the portable is actually a super sleek smartphone with retractable controls. Reggie: "This is "Nintendo Phone." It plays both apps and cart games and connects to your TV via the docking station for improved performance." Yes I'm crazy.

Cool, but if there isn't any incentive of playing them on the NX rather than on your smartphone, it seems pretty pointless to me.

You want them to not go out of business, right? They you don't want them competing against smartphones as directly. :)

I always thought it odd that Nintendo console owners couldn't answer questions in Miitomo.
