Wuchang: Fallen Feathers |OT| Saving dat pirate booty

one thing I find annoying is how there's no i-frames on knockdown, you can just get combo'd to death;

On the plus side this works against your enemies too, I've used it to my advantage on multiple occasions 👌

Opened a door that gave a choice in Cloudspire and was teleported into a mine. I now have 20 different paths to explore and no idea where I came from and where I'm going, I live for this shit 😆

Amulet that grants life on killing an enemy is god-tier for fully exploring every nook and cranny of an area without fear of running out of flasks, just don't forget to switch it out when fighting a boss.

My only minor gripes so far:
-Too many loading screens. Resting at bonfires is such a long process.
-Being knocked down sucks because you can't use stamina or rolls to get up faster, just stuck on the floor with slow get up animation.
-The pinwheel for your lantern having to be turned on after every death sucks because I don't want to waste an item bind for this thing

Otherwise that's it. PS5 pro is flawless fun on quality mode.

Almost done with the outside of cloudspire, I mean I have access to cloudspire proper, but there are still a few small areas I need to clear; also the 6th boss is in this area and it's completely optional it seems, I just found him basically by accident just exploring everything.

edit: 7th boss beaten, I feel this one is gonna filter people maybe harder than the 5th one; of course OP one-handed sword beats it first try ;P

Man, when boss combat clicks it feels really, really good. Was struggling a bit against Commander Honglan and on my 6th or so attempt it just suddenly became this wonderfully rapid dance of deflecting, countering, dodging and attacking only pausing to briefly let stamina regen.

Using longswords and only longswords for this playthrough.

Just beat the fifth boss by only pressing two buttons the entire fight lol, one-handed sword supremacy!

I can definitely see her filtering the fuck out of people though.

For anyone wondering why I glaze one-handed sword so much:

Fear not the man who practice thousand moves once
Fear the man who practice one move a thousand times

Gonna have to google where to go next, beat the tree and centipede, opened up some areas around the sanctum but it seems that I've hit a dead end and the teleport system gives zero hints.

So with 1H sword what do you do to avoid damage, strictly dodge?

So far I'm of the mind long sword is the best because of the generous deflect window.

Once you beat the beach boss a path opens right next to it, you basically just turn around from facing it and go left lol.

I may need to turn up my brightness when I play at home on my OLED lol. I saw it right away once I got to work on this monitor with no HDR. The game looks so much better at home.

I just discovered that mana potions are actually health potions and you can increase them pretty quick. I read somewhere that the skill system was confusing and I have to agree

I was playing all the time with 3 potions, basically hard mode lmao

Yeah, most games have mana as magic energy but another definition is life force so I guess for this game it's health.

New fave outfit, Palace Maid's Satin Dress. This one actually gives her some junk and is super low cut.

Exactly, I was thinking mana was magic related and not health potions

Anyway, the level design in this game is off the charts. I am discovering ways back to the beginning that are awesome

Seriously great game, for me better than Lies of P, I didn't the level design in that game at all, I think Souls should have this kind of interconnected levels. Exploration feels so much better this way

Same. I like Lies but much prefer fantasy worlds so this one edges it for me. I agree on the level design as well. I'm having a blast. Haven't been this hooked on a game in a while.

Pretty sure it's called "manna" in the game, i think it refers to the biblical manna.

The axe is obviously slower but I have a trick. Charge attacks with R2 a few meters from the enemies. That way you make sure that you will hit them and even stop their attacks. It's all about timing. The Axe has the benefit as well to be able to block attacks early on although maybe other weapons have this skill too I am not sure about that.

Remember that this is an rpg and in the beginning the game will be harder and become easier when leveling up

As for the poison, make sure to take every item you encounter in the map, you probably have in your inventory the purple flower that cures corruption, the green I believe cures poison.

Just be patience and learn, the game is very rewarding when you put time into it
I played a couple more hours last night, started it on the living room PC.

Was quickly murdered by the lady with a beak. Nope, not doing that again.

Went and slayed the bubbly feather demon thing instead, the one upstairs in one safe building, no idea about names I just mash everything, and went down some stairs into a mine of sorts with classic Souls elevators you have to go get. You probably know where I am.

I definitely enjoy it more now. It's okay. Been erasing the skill tree to try out different weapons. Not sold on the axe. Right now I play with a longsword that it's said becomes a whip for longer reach. Has a cool backflip thing on LT.

But it still builds up annoyance like nothing else. I absolutely hate the demon thing arriving after death. It's like they played Hollow Knight and thought the mechanic was cool but the shade was to easy so they turned it into a mini boss. I die everytime and lose the "souls". There is also an exaggerated use of surprise troll encounters, like the crawling pot things. And looting is still extremely boring. I just get items, almost no gear.

7/10 - 6.5 hours

We're going by the *first* time you play the game, not the 20th lol
Yeah but by now you are super skilled and experienced with soulslikes so your first time with dark souls was deeply different than your first time with wuchang.

The accumulated experience is always gonna skew your judgement a bit.

Is that right lol

No doubt, I'm comparing it to the first time I played Dark Souls 1 but yeah, dozens of games completed in the genre later means any successive game would be easier though I still found stuff like Lies of P plenty challenging, this isn't quite on that level (yet).

20 hours in and what I said remains true, on the easier side, only been one real "roadblock" boss and even that was just 30 minutes of attempts to pass through.

Oh man, talisman that increases damage to "large" enemies is lit as fuck. Forgot I had it and tried it on the rebel leader boss, we're talking close to double DMG difference, smoked him 👌

I've played the game up to the second boss, and I think it's very good, and the level design is top-notch. I see a lot of strange comparisons to Lies of P, which I don't understand.
Wuchang is a Soulslike, and Lies of P has been turned into an adventure game since the last update, so I can't really relate.

the level design is top-notch
Yeah that's an area where it deserves to be praised. The early game village area before the beak lady was top notch. The way they made the map vertical by walking on roof tops and ledges and bridges etc and eventually returning to the same area but from a different direction etc was fantastic.

What do you guys rate the game so far out of 10? And what are your thoughts on performance

7/10, max. Game is okay but the combat just isn't satisfying/meaty/heavy enough for me to carry the game. Also don't like the skill tree and how basic moves like parry are treated as unlockable skills that have to slot in a weapon as if it's a special move. Combat would've been way more satisfying if it had parry/deflect as a core mechanic like Sekiro or Rise of Ronin.

Visuals are nice, music is nice, performance is good on my machine. Story/lore is ultra barebones, there's barely anything there so far.

Maybe it picks up later but so far it got nothing on Lies of P.

I really wish there wasn't blood and dead bodies everywhere. You can remove the gore with settings but everything is still like walking around in a slaughterhouse. I don't need it, just makes it harder to find time to play the game.

6/10 after 2 hours.
7/10 after 6.5 hours.
We'll see where it lands, I doubt I'll finish it but I'll play it some more.

The base performance is alright but there are the usual UE5 dips here and there.

I'm having a blast exploring and I love the combat and aesthetics. I think if you're a Souls fan, you'll love it. I think parrying is cool, but I don't need a game to be based around that. The magic and long sword combo is chefs kiss for me. 8.5/10. Maybe higher by the end. Performance is flawless for me. 4070ti, i9, 64 gigs of ram.

As a Souls vet whose played everything worth playing in the genre (with a bunch of plat trophies under my belt) after 20 hours on PS5 Pro I'd give it a 7 thus far, not on the level of Lies of P, Wukong, Lords of the Fallen, Nioh 2 or Khazan (to name some of the best from the past few years) and not even in the same universe as FROM stuff but it's a solid albeit flawed entry into the Souls genre pantheon, generous too, the world is massive with lots to explore and if you like these kinds of games I can't see you not liking this.

Bo Sorcerer?

Cloudspire is ridiculously big, winding and labyrinthine. I've long lost track of where I've already explored, where I still need to go, where I've made a mental note to return to, it's crazy lol

Im currently there. Will take a while for sure. The annoying part is the runback with the ladder and you have to skip the cutscene everytime. Makes the death even more annoying

Yes man, I think this boss needs some tweaking. The second half is just impossible 😭. I can't even see where the attacks are coming from.

Just beat it lol. Took me like 15 tries. Use the deflect skill on her, it makes the fight a lot easier

They need to fix the dithering on ps5 pro. It drives me nuts on the main character.

And the PS2 quality textures

UC8jdPa50WCkVwI1.jpg

And the frame hitching, and the random occasional freezing for 5 seconds, and the... you get the point. Enjoying the game a lot but it definitely has it's problems, needed a few more months in the oven.

Edit: oh boy, this boss makes Honglan look like Minnie Mouse, starting to irritate me 😂

Fml, I am stuck at this one boss fight for an hour. I refuse to switch and change my weapon and skilltree just to beat this bitch.
Maybe the dual blades aren't meant for this fight.

Games was fun till now, but at this moment it feels like another fromsoft slop boss fight that's just difficult for the sake of it.

Without much spoilers, will there be more of this bs?

Im loving the game. It looks gorgeous and runs like a dream on my PC. Level design is seriously god tier. Combat is also great and im really liking the levelup and skill point system.

Since you say you've been "stuck at this one boss fight for an hour" and "this bitch" I'm going to assume it's the human lady boss Commander Honglan.

Have you tried changing armor? She does slash damage so putting on your best slash resistant armor will negate a considerable amount of the incoming damage. Resistances and defense can make a big difference in any fight that you're struggling with.

6 out of 10.

Good level design, bad combat.

I feel this game is either unfair or too easy depending on the build.

I was playing with the Axe and it was quite unfun, most enemies felt unfair, they barely feel your attack, are faster than the character, can attack non stop and can cause a lot of damage.

Then I changed to magic with the one hand sword and the game became a joke. You can hit everything from far, dodge anything the enemy tosses at you, the character basically have infinite spells and the enemies don't know how to deal with those attacks.

I like this type of game because of the combat, I can tolerate bad level design like in Nioh or Khazan.... But I am not sure how long I can tolerate this bad combat.

The perfomance on the Series S has been great so far.
