X Rebirth |OT| Back In The Womb With You

Well, I haven't yet bought the game, but I eventually planned to, and now I'm not so sure. Maybe I'll get it a year or so down the road on a Steam sale, after it's been fixed like mad by both Egosoft and the community. Not my problem, that's lost money to them.

Anyway, I really don't like apologists and I don't appreciate victim-blaming. Didn't like those attitudes in the Battlefield 4 threads and don't like them here. Read the thread and read this. People have gathered plenty of evidence for this first being conceived as a console game. The UI issues alone are indicative enough. Still, even ignoring all that, releasing a game in this kind of state is shameful and people are rightly angry and demanding refunds.
The gamepad support isn't proof that the game was ever planned for consoles (Big Picture is a thing after all), and neither is the "Xbox" string in shaders. Egosoft might have used shaders written by somebody else that just happen to contain console specific stuff. Not that I'd rule out the possibility, but what has been discovered so far is in no way decisive.

I'm staying aboard the Rebirth starship, as leaky as it is right now. Not so much a question of hype biting my posterior - even though it was my most anticipated title - but the fact is, there's so much to like DESPITE the limp floor show regarding stuff that is easily fixed.

It'll be one of those long-legged games, but we just need EGOSOFT and modders to flip the semi-cooked morsel a few times in the pan.

That's fair enough, though in light of the things presented Egosoft forums thread, I believe it to be a relatively weak counterargument. Granted, the evidence so far is all circumstantial, so I probably worded my post too strongly (and I apologise for that), but the accusations are not unfounded. In any case, this is not a court of law, we don't get to pass sanctioning judgement and we will likely never hear the full official answer to the matter anyway, so we'll have to make do with what we've got. It doesn't really matter, too, because it is merely one of the indicators of the origin of all the problems present in the product. It doesn't address them--that's what should be happening, though, and I'm sure people would appreciate the additional pressure on Egosoft if major outlets would finally review the game.

Seriously, is this first X game release for people? Their games always were buggy, because of scale of the project.
Anyone who expected smooth launch really should research game before buying.

And what console based design leftovers? FFS show me other game, that is doing what this game is doing even in X: Rebirth.

Everything I've read is beyond just bugs. It's not only broken in that regard but has terrible gameplay decisions.

Doubt anyone will honestly leave the game forever. It's a niche title for a niche audience. People, including myself, is just kind of upset on the level of which the game is broken.

For instance at this stage I can't touch superhighways without trying like 5 times with saving/ loading due to being pushed billions of KM away from the exit point.

Or how the I experienced the third 'endless' escort mission today. That's 3/4 missions bugged which has nothing to do with the main campaign.

Just like the last two big titles I bought (Rome 2, BF4) this game is going to the 'wait until fixed' pile.

Wow, what a piece of crap. Conspiracy theory at its finest.

Even if it is the case, and it kinda looks that way, I don't think there's any problem once the game is brought up to speed on PC. Outside of bugs etc., the real bottleneck for me is menu/UI issues. For all the dryness of XTC, that was a game that had a UI modus operandi that was relatively succinct, given the complexities. I'd like the same replicated in Rebirth.

Agreed on all counts. No apologist business here.

Tell you what, though, it makes me even more relieved that the OP was as to the point and free of PR horseshit as it could have possibly been.

Yep this for someone that enjoys the occasional space game, This is pretty broke design wise in many ways besides all the bugs.

I think it's too early to judge what kind of experience this game offers. Once all the gears are oiled and bugs are squashed, then we'll see what's on the table. Then, with any luck, we'll get our massive mod overhauls like the Xtended suite.

I've managed to spend about eight hours with it so far. I find myself coming back to it constantly in spite of the bugs and sometimes poor performance. I am looking forward to seeing what becomes of the game as time moves forward.

Maybe Egosoft could make a pile of cash by having a sale of TC and AP :)

They did a Humble Weekly a few weeks ago. Also, judging by the Steam charts and some charts I saw somewhere at some point, this is already the best selling X title by 232392439239%. Just wonder how much of that is refunds.

kinda wish the marketing reflected off this lol. I came in expecting a buggy but good space accessible sim game. I got was a super buggy nebula of ideas and concepts.

maybe if they had like a mass effect budget, they could have pulled it off. I think i'd been a bit more forgiving if this was $20 I guess.

But I'm not too mad. I actually have a good batting record of enjoying most games that i bought at launch.

probably should have waited for impressions before buying this. learned my lesson!

Funnily enough, I've only had one severely bad preorder experience, and that was with Sword of the Stars 2. So, guess it's glass half full for even the most buggy of launches compared to that unfortunate monstrosity.

Anyone playing this in free play mode. How are you actually supposed to get started earning credits? The only real ways I can see are

Running easy enough missions to complete with your starter equipment. Could be tricky given how often they bug out.

Shooting endlessly respawning cans in the empty. Not what I signed up for and pretty cheesy to be honest.

In station trading. Pricing for this seems to follow no rules of supply and demand at all.

Did they not get around to that bit yet?

For those needing more room to ogle, there's a stripped-back cockpit mod out in the wild.

I think you'll agree it frees up what was once a rather claustrophobic/constricted viewport:

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I don't give a shit that this was probably once a console game. I'm more disappointed that the game is, based on impressions, not very good by its own merits :/.

It's just a bit of a muddle-headed wombat at the moment, bugs notwithstanding. Great ideas mixed with bizarre ones. Browsing the modding sub-forum on the Rebirth site...man, X modders are fast and surgical. They're already working on killing the highways (a part that I don't actually mind, it's a bit of pulpy fun) and figuring how to redo traffic...exciting times.

If these things genuinely are fixable, then maybe there is hope for the game yet.

You know, this game should totally support dual monitors with how the cockpit view is setup.

I think the previous games supported multiple monitors since X2 (in fact it was one of the first multi-screen capable PC games, I recall a PC games mag testing how well multiple monitors work and finding that the only games that worked were X and Flight Simulator), no idea if they stripped that out.

Playing with the cockpit mod is sooooo much better.

Also found one to get rid of the annoying message about steering mode that was always present using the mouse to steer.

I've followed the advice to play Free Play instead of campaign so I can actually do the open world stuff without the navigator trying to get me to some stupid story objective every time. How much does a freighter cost though? And do you buy one at a specific station or an NPC? I've asked tons of ships and NPCs for the way to the ship vendor but when they did answer they only told me that they don't know of any.

So... say... is this true?

What the hell happened at egosoft these last seven years. It's one thing to release a minimum viable product - and another to release an entirely unfinished game.

I recall doing that in Freespace back in the day. Nice blind spot between the engines of a GVD whatever-that-was-called.

Devs said that language they use is very similar to X3. This is why we already see some mods.

Egosoft mods community is fantastic. I can't wait for X-tended version or Rebirth.

Imo highways aren't really bad. Problem is this weird out of place minigame and if you are not using it it takes ton of time to get somewhere. I would love for example just one speed (for example 50% of max minigame speed). Jump gates in X3 for AI were instant and here it takes sometimes a lot of time to get somewhere. In X3 with Jump drive you could just jump to other part of galaxy almost instant as long as there is becon or gate in that system.

edit:

Also devs made mods more friendly by integrating into game actually extensions tab.

For all of the game's issues, I'm still really enjoying the experience. I haven't encountered anything too game-breaking, just one crash and some lower-than-expected framerates.

It's important to note, this is my first X game so I don't really have much to compare it to.

The same freighter you get for free in the campaign costs about 4million credits. You buy it from a ship yard. Just keep exploring and you'll find them

They tell I am in the tutorial stage still, looking for the assassin ROV...

I seem to remember they told me earlier to fly close to stations to gain information about them - where does this information go? Also, after I do so, the police bang into me and yell at me on the radio for doing so... Why?

I've been opening lockers and boxes to pick up misc. items - where/how do I see my inventory?

Is there a way to find out where I should dock to pick up this assassin ROV drone?

Think most drone dealers sell them in there 'special' category or w/e its called.

my problem is i'm broke, and the game doesn't do shit to explain how to make money. i gather i needa do quests/missions but i'm having a hard time finding any kind of mission disperser and the only mission i found was, deliver 240 narcotics to X... except i'm broke, and i don't even know where to get narcotics.

I'm kinda baffled by Bernds Steam community post.
Just one example.
3) AI bugs with trade ships (please make sure you are using the trade menu correctly before assuming you are affected by this bug).
That's a ... disquieting way of putting it. Stealth-accusing your customer base to fail at playing the game you made is kinda sad. Can't think of a German wording that would make this a translation error, either.

The sorely needed UI fix seems to be pretty damn far off according to his list.

Also, the part about not putting much emphasis on ensuring the game runs well on hi-perf parts is just mindboggling. I would understand some problems with SLI/Crossfire, but performance appears to be constant and pretty bad no matter what kind of setup you have.

( As an aside: is the plot really that shitty? No spoilers please, I only heard it's basically a chain of "Booby McCleavage says stuff and the main character nods and follows her lead" )

You need to look at station. Generaly there are 4 types of icons:

i - which gives you bonus
resource - with icon depending what is resource and if it is buy or sell
docking point - where you can dock (there are like 4 different ones and most of the time they are in places where you can see them from afar.
mission spot - briefcase, skull etc where people give you mission. they can be hidden same as "i" places

so archaic. rpgs set in medieval times have quest boards. Would love to have one of those at each station.

Who plays the X games for the plot?

How the hell does the purchasing interface work?!

Buy 100 energy cells - ok... fly there, open the menu, hit next, select '100' click purchase...

"Ok, I'm on my way..."

Thefuq does that mean?!

Did I instead tell the freighter flying AI to go buy the things?

Their inhouse engine has Xbox360 references for the very first time and it works perfectly with a gamepad but not a keyboard.

They've admitted to experiment with current gen consoles like two years ago. Its not new.
Having some references in the engine does not mean anything.

v1.13 - 2013-11-18

• Fixed player occasionally being sent 1000s of km into space on leaving superhighway.
• Fixed some invalid (but harmless) values in some savegames.
• Fixed some causes of ship traders getting stuck (more to come on this).

It auto choose amount for you. I know it is fucked up and non readable for first time or second. The slider part is where you can add or remove stuff you don't want to but it will set default order from get go. For example for 100 energy cells it will choose auto 100 cels so you need to only press A to accept.

So they fixed queues ? Then trading now will be playable. Just few more patches and game will be in good state. From that point some serious rework of UI and Fleet command

What does it mean though? did I in effect order my freighter pilot to go buy the energy cells? It appears so as the freighter name was in the buy window...

I see - The Rahanas now has picked up 1200 energy cells. oops. How do I get these on my ship so I can continue the tutorial, or should they stay on the freighter?

yes.

edit:

looks like 1.13 patch fixed for good traders . I tested it and it doesn't seem to queue forever like it used to.
