Partial List of Xbox 2 Launch Titles Revealed
Posted by Curll on November 26 '04 at 04:04 AMHalo 3 will be released in 2006 in direct competition with the PS3. There, that's it, I don't want to hear anymore about it until 2006.

The "killer app" of next fall's launch will be Perfect Dark Zero (Working Title) by Rare. Originally under development for the Nintendo GameCube, put on hold in order to work on other GameCube games, then started again for the Xbox once Microsoft purchased Rare Ltd. Perfect Dark Zero's development shifted to Xbox 2 only a few months after Rare's purchase. Joanna Dark was prominently featured on the Rare X02 promo. However, since that time, only the slightest of info of the game has been mentioned. Ken Lobb (Previously with Nintendo), who oversaw the development of GoldenEye 007 and the original Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64, simply mentioned that PD0 is in development and looks amazing in an interview with IGN.

Right now, we could get our first glimpse of the game at CES in January, where Microsoft founder and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates will be giving the keynote address and unveil the second incarnation of Xbox. There is some speculation that the reason Kameo has been delayed so often is Rare's toiling with online programming (Conker: Live and Reloaded will be their first venture into online gaming and of course PD0 will feature an extremely robust online component.) and their work on PD0 and possibly other killer Xbox 2 titles. Their development team for Kameo is much smaller than previous games and other members aren't really pouring in to finish the game.

One of the main hurdles at this time is how Microsoft wants to approach the marketing of PD0. It has been decided that this will be THE Xbox 2 launch title. However, Perfect Dark didn't sell overly well (Not nearly as well as GoldenEye, at least) on the N64 and with the recent release of GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, there is some hesitation for advertising to include "From the makers of GoldenEye". And since Rare has released two console titles this generation, there is concern that Rare's name recognition has been severely weakened to the casual consumer. On top of that, the main character is Joanna Dark. How Rare and Microsoft will present her is up in the air. Female leads in games are, no pun intended, rare. The most successful have been Tomb Raider and Metroid. Lara Croft's franchise is dead and she got attention because of her huge, huge t*ts. Samus is behind a crap load of armor plating and you can't really tell that she is a female. Microsoft doesn't want to stoop to promoting Joanna as the super-sexy bad ass, drawing in gamers with sex appeal (besides the fact this is a FPS and you don't really see Joanna besides cut scenes). But, they fear that gamers won't take to Joanna and therefor, the game.

Along with PD0, Microsoft will release Project Gotham Racing 3 (Working title). Details are scarce on PGR3. Madden 2006 and ESPN Football 2K6 have been under development for a few months. The engines for the next generation consoles have worked on for a fairly long time. EA is also expected to release a number of other sports titles, but not their entire lineup.

A fighting game, or a few, is set to launch with the console. Dead or Alive 4? Could be. But, don't bet the barn on that. Microsoft may have it's own fighter waiting if it isn't DOA4. And, other companies could have a fighting game ready by launch.

On the RPG front, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is in development for the new console. A launch title? Slight chance, but there is a good chance it'll slip a bit. Other PC/Xbox titles have been rushed for the holidays and turned out none-too-great (Deus Ex 2). And Bethesda's first offering for the Xbox, Morrowind, was a buggy mess. Pirates of the Caribbean, that was even worse.

Day 1/FASA is working on a huge online game. Huge. With lots of action. It should please that cyberpunk niche...

BioWare still has an unannounced Microsoft published title in development. They have full access to XNA and the Unreal 3 engine. But, don't expect anything at launch. After all, this is BioWare.

Amped 3 will probably make the launch. Top Spin tennis is also being thrown around. It seems Links has Dodo'd, competing with Tiger Woods was fairly useless. Microsoft is looking to revamp XSN with non-traditional sports titles. There isn't a large market in the [realistic] snowboarding, tennis, or fishing circles. And a few other genres are being explored.

DICE, Climax, and Starbreeze are "well into" development for Xbox 2 titles. At least one of these European studios will have a launch title (Probably Climax, it's a shooter).

Ubi-Soft has started working on various Tom Clancy franchises for the next generation. But, don't expect any of them to be launching along side the new console.

Half-Life 2 development moved from Xbox to Xbox 2 a while ago. With all-new features exclusively for Xbox 2.

By the time Xbox 2 launches in Japan, it should launch with a decent number of Japanese RPGs. No Final Fantasies, however.

So, here's a good idea of what will be launching next fall (or at least by the end of the year). Obviously, not all of the titles:

Perfect Dark Zero
Project Gotham Racing 3
Madden 2006
ESPN Football 2K6
Amped 3
Half-Life 2
NASCAR Race For The Cup 2006
NBA Live 2006
ESPN NBA 2K6
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Based on the new movie)
Mission Impossible (Based on the new movie)
King Kong (Based on the new movie)
Star Wars game
Fighting Game (DOA4?)
Fighting Game (KI3?)
Unknown RPG (Not Oblivion)
Climax's Shooter

How are they gonna advertise it as "from the makers of GoldenEye" when there was barely any maker from GoldenEye involved? All EA sports games ready at launch (or shortly after) is a very smart move. First next-gen sports games, it might sell extremely well.

FYI this is from the same dude who wrote an E3 article that stated halo 2 and fable were disappointing even though he never actually played them...

So you're saying he's a psychic.

How many Microsoft qualifications do you think Bill Gates has?

Incidentally, that seems to be a fair assessment of the marketing difficulties PD0 will face. Leet-ass fucks will know what it is, and of course there'll be a good weight of hype behind it, especially as a launch title. Strange though, that we don't know anything about this game, at all, and yet it remains an exciting prospect. Who'd be a gamer?

I know that it's a first-person shooter, developed by Rare, for a launch game on the Xenon/Xbox 2. The game stars Joanna Dark in the prequel to Perfect Dark.

It can be assumed the dual (may be multiple this time) weapon functions will continue with this game as well.

Day 1/FASA working on MMORPG? Do you know how small those two teams are, esp. FASA. You have a better chance that Day 1 is working on Shadowrun than a MMOG.

Who the hell is Curll?
Stopped reading when read this:
"Female leads in games are, no pun intended, rare. The most successful have been Tomb Raider and Metroid. Lara Croft's franchise is dead and she got attention because of her huge, huge t*ts. Samus is behind a crap load of armor plating and you can't really tell that she is a female"

Sounds like ten year old making up stuff to me. I know americans are not brightess bunch but I know alot my friends were turned off totaly with lara croft by second incarnation because of exploiting and nutty englargement of boobs and shallow play, total opposite this kiddy states.

I think it's a fair point, as regards mass mainstream perception of the worth of the characters? Samus barely exists in anyones consciousness, whereas Lara is was at one point ubiquitous for very obvious reasons.

Anihawk, I still don't think that's a lot of information, given the length of time since the last game, and everything that's happened in between! A screenshot would be good, a mission statement from the developer, or just any insight into what it is we'll be playing ... Getting het up without any of this falls somehwere between premature and unguarded, I think.

Curll = John Edwards of gaming

I see... a lot of... guessing...

CRYSTAL%20BALL.JPG

Nothing really to blow anybody's mind here. A lot of rumors and info we pretty much know already tied in with some reasonable guesswork. Meh.

Its pretty clear that this article is a culmination of PR statements, well educated guessing that and stuff thats probably just not true. Guess it's nice to have it all in one place though.

Don't think id buy on at launch for that lot, though they might persuade me if PDZ is something cooler than i can imagine.

I just hope games like Star Wars episode 3 still get released on Xbox aswell as Xenon (i know EA said they would, hope others follow suit)

PD: Zero for the hardcore fanboys on launch day.

Halo 3 for them + mass market on PS3 launch day.

Sony calls Rockstar in a panic.

"We need GTA4 and we need it at launch."

Great times. I love hard competition :)

Am I right in guessing that Bungie will come up with a non-Halo title for Xenon's launch?

No, I think MS will save them and the big gun to go head to head with Sony on PS3 launch day. They won't waste that on early adopters.

What do you all think about the possibility of the 3 or so scrapped Xbox exclusive games (B.C., TFLO, Kameo, possibly more) Coming back up for the Xenon at launch time? I think it is a very real possibility, and that much of this 'news' is fake and speculation.

Doesn't Bizzarre switch up the name of their racer? (Metropolis Street Racer -> Project Gotham Racer)

Aren't the Amped guys working on another Microsoft Snowboarding game that's not Amped?

Aren't the Top Spin guys working on Top Spin 2 However (Pacific Light and Magic)

Will my current Xbox Live account work on Xbox 2?

And how about the cords? Will my Xbox RGB cable work on Xbox 2? I sure hope so. Sony did a good thing with the PS2, all the PS1 cables work with PS2.

I doubt the next GTA game is a PS3 exclusive. Sony is trying to get the GTA series back under slavery and Rockstar is basically telling them to F**K themselves knowing full well they can make more money with the GTA series on both the XBOX and PS consoles.

By the time Xbox 2 launches in Japan...
What does that mean!? They better not leave too much of a gap or they won't stand a chance against PS3. I was hoping it was going to be pretty much a worldwide launch like Halo 2, to be honest.

You'd have to be be a moron to bank on Rare delivering you a flagship launch title.

By the time Xbox 2 launches in Japan, it should launch with a decent number of Japanese RPGs. No Final Fantasies, however.

I call pretty heavy BS on this rumor. You can say Xbox 2 will launch with Japanese support in Japan. But rpgs? Even the PS1/PS2/DC didn't launch with 'a decent number of rpgs'. RPGs usually start trickling in about 6 months to a year after the systems launch.

I been saying it for a while now. PD Zero will be THE launch title for Xbox 2, MS are going to turn this into a huge franchise, no-one apart from educated gamers really know who she is. It'll be sorta new to the mass market. With the killer graphics and next gen hype going around (i have no doubt this game will rock too) PD Zero should be the equivalent to HAlo on launch.

It will most likley be the first game to demonstrate the next evolution of Xbox Live, take what bungie are doing to the next level.

And im glad to see Half LIfe 2 moving onto Xbox 2. I was going to wait for the Xbox 2 version anayway, Id much rather play the game on my home cinema setup.

I reckon Factor 5 are making a Star Wars game for the Xenon right now. We know they moved onto next-gen like...I dunno, a year ago, and as Sony haven't revealed that much even now except to major developers and we've had reports that they're no longer going to be working so cloesly with Nintendo, MS seems like a safe bet.

My guess would be a Rogue Squadron online title. The Xenon is obviously perfect for that and I seem to recall some mention that they'd like to take the series online in a past interview...or maybe he just said they didn't want to make ANOTHER Rogue Squadron game unless they could do something new, like take it online.

It makes sense for all parties involved though. Star Wars battles online, original trilogy, Rebels v Empire, would be huge.

You could buy all of those at the N64's launch?

Where was I?

Of course not, but they were all flagship titles. From the sound of things, Rare has been working on PDZ for a long time now. I figure it will be their only launch title.

Even though i thought Eternal Darkness sucked bigtime, i reckon MS have some sort of game in development with SK (according to Matt). Launch? Doubt it, but to help MS through its second wave of titles

Perhaps we might even see a Silicon Knigths title there at launch? That wouldn't surprise me since they've been dead silence since March. Oh well, maybe I wish for too much now :D
