Xbox 2 @ MTV --> May 12, 2005

Viewers will get an exclusive look at the Xbox vision for the next generation -- one that ensures that the user experience is always connected, always personalized and always in high definition. The special will feature never-before-seen, action-packed gameplay of future Xbox games, a peek into the future of the Xbox Live (TM) online gaming service, backstage celebrity interviews and exclusive insider footage on the making of the next-generation console.

Sounds good to me - excellent move by MS.

I just hope they're not going to eschew traditional press relations in favour of a completely MTV exclusive information release i.e. I hope they'll provide media and releases to the wider media for coverage also.

I find Microsoft's accomodation of non North American markets very disturbing. Those filthy Europeans might get uppity! They should know their place.

Pssh. That we're getting it AFTER the US is "accomdation"? If MS wanted to be accomodating, they'd air it over here at the same time as the US, and then again the following day. Yes, only 10 people in Europe would stay up and watch the first showing, but that's not the point ;)

Seriously, though, looks like GAF on my PSP on the night of the 12th is my best bet..I wonder how it'll handle 1280x720 screenies...

double edged sword if you ask me...sure it will get nationwide exposure now but the downside to that is you might as well say goodbye to any major xbox hardware sales from here on out.

The way MS has been going about it, that seems to be what they WANT.

I'm expecting cool video clips with some good spin talk......but light on hard facts (hardware specs).

Not a bad PR move since a lot of gamers no nothing about the next Xbox and this will be the first they have heard about it.

Another thing about this is that if MS manages to get the impression out there that the 360 is VERY powerful, then Sony will have to work harder to inform the public that the PS3 is actually more powerful. Public impression is after all much more important than reality (see the general impression that the PS2 is more powerful than Gamecube).

This is the first time that Sony has been seriously challenged on the PR front I think. Interesting times.

Remember when the GC was revealed? That was so fucking awesome (no matter how you feel the games and system evetually turned out). All these great videos flashing up oen after another, Luigi and Zelda, Metroid and Rogue Squadron, Meowth's Party, Wave Race and really shit Rare demos.

Aside from the Rare demos, that was really great. I hope MS do something similar. Not that they have the brands, but the same idea of showing the most exciting games for 10 or 15 seconds each.

Agreed, they've gotta keep things nice and simple and non-geeky for the masses. I just hope, though, that we won't be waiting till the E3 conference for that kind of detail (tech specs) - accompanying press releases etc. would do the job nicely.

WOW, in 24 hours every MTV channel in the world will show it, even Japan! We can't say MS isn't taking this think damn seriously... And I think this will be only the beginning, I'm wondering what will they do till launch O__O

That's great news.
Now I don't have to hurry to get from the Sony E3 conference to the Microsoft one!

they're going to be showing lots of games at MS conf though! lots of games!

you really think everything will be covered in that 30 minute span? :P

It'd be better if it was an hour, but obviously that'd be very difficult for MTV to accomodate. 30 minutes will evaporate very quickly, especially with the music performances and general celebrity-related crap. I guess we'll see the final console design, controller, game footage, functionality demos etc. but it'll be more of a sampling than a detailed expose. The only question then is how much they'll reveal on the internet alongside the show..

Show what?
Teasers?

Damn the videogame industry. I was ready to lose my interest in videogames altogether, but they have to pull me back in with new consoles. Ahh, the excitement of the Dreamcast/PS2 announcements is back. :D

I think this is a good strategy by Microsoft. Show the masses what they should expect of the Xbox 360, get them excited, and then a few days later show off the big guns at E3 to get the hardcore gamers in too. I can't wait for the unveiling.

What if MS pulled a Sega Saturn and the 360 was available on May 12? Oh teh horror!

Joking aside, even Sega never did something like that. Saturn and PlayStation still both came out in 1995 in the US. It would have been funny if they released it in May of 1994 though.

"Yes, that's right Ladies and Gentlemen - from today, you can pick up a X360/Halo3 bundle for just $99! Make sure to get yours. Oh, and gofreak? Yes, I will marry you!"

"Last week Sony advised it would hold its E3 press conference a few hours before Microsoft's, a break with tradition that some saw as a sign Sony wanted to steal Microsoft's anticipated thunder."

heh.
Wasn't their conference moved a day forward because Nintendo already got Sony's usual time slot? I mean, if they really wanted to be the first to show the console, they would schedule it before 5.12, right?

Well, you're right. People already knew of the Saturn's existence well before and it was out in Japan. But it was a shocker that they did that early US release. Of course, all it really did was piss off the other retailers who weren't included, alienate developers who'd been working on titles with a fall release date in mind, and then let down anyone who bought the machine and then had to wait 3 months for the next game (Bug!) to come out...

I've always enjoyed the Apple-style of release where they announce a new product and it's available for purchase right then and there. I don't think it'd be smart to do it that way with a new game console though.

Definitely not. If console would be a self sufficient device, like MP3 player is, then it would make sense. As it is, consoles are much too dependant on 3rd party software and need to be made visible in advance as to gain that kind of support.

I wonder what games will be shown...I'd say the Master Cheif will pop up in some shape or form, nothing major of course, but he has to be the main selling point so I'd say they will have something Halo related.

Great move by MS. All they have to do now is show the next halo for like 2 seconds, simultaneously making millions of casuals (and hardcore) pee their pants on site.

It will be interesting to see what games will be shown during this event. Halo will likely make an appearance. EA of course. Rare? Any surprises (GTA)? Since it will be shown in Japan, there should be a segment on Japanese developers like Tecmo, and maybe a surprise or two. The next gen console war is here. WOW!!

Good move by MS. I'm glad b/c we'll get way more game footage with this one show than we'll get from E3...on tv that is. Sony's press conference won't get nearly as much airtime, although it'll get a lot of replays on Headline News. But Sony doesn't really need to one-up this since their launch will come at a later date. But I do hope they do something similar, with a tv special. This PS launch campaigns have been pretty low-key since the PS2. PEACE.

Something about "MTV Special" doesn't really appeal...I'm worried it could be very "airhead" stuff and basically a big advertisement (well, of course it will be), versus what we're used to. They seem to be cutting out the middleman (i.e. the press), but the press provides (or should provide) an independent buffer between their marketing message and us which is welcome.

That's the whole point when it comes to generating hype.

It worked GREAT for the Bush Administration. :)

I really think it's an excellent move...an excellent idea. But it will all come down to execution. If executed well, it could be the one event that makes the new Xbox a success or a dud.

I think the single most important title will be the next Madden. After that, there NEEDS to be games like GTA, another Halo, or something that looks amazing.

Sony can easily destroy all of MS's thunder at E3, if they unviel exclusive titles like a new GTA, a new MGS, and a new GT.

In a nutshell, great idea MS, but the amount of hype you generate will be in direct relation to the amount of AAA next gen sequels they show. The actors and stuff...they'll help gain interest in the event itself, rather than the console.
