Xbox offered PlayStation a 10-year deal for Call of Duty, Sony declined to comment

Microsoft tried to sweeten the deal, but Sony still doesn't want it.

Now, a new report has suggested that Microsoft has conceded ten years of Call of Duty access. Microsoft gaming CEO Phil Spencer has also been conducting various interviews to emphasize that there's no plan to remove or degrade Call of Duty on PlayStation, despite Sony's claims to the contrary. Sony declined to comment on the 10-year licensing deal report while claiming that Microsoft has a "history" of "dominating" industries while claiming gamers' "choices will disappear," without explaining exactly what choices they're referring to.

I don't ever expect them to allow Gamepass on PS, but it is a bit of thier exclusivity contracts coming to bite them in the ass.

I honestly can't believe Sony is crying like children over Call of Casual. Especially since they have the means to make their own version. At this point I hope Microsoft wins whatever battles they're in because Sony is putting on a clown show and I don't like nothin' bout it.

I’m starting to think Sony’s issue isn’t Xbox exclusive Call of Duty, it’s Game Pass Call of Duty period. The mere existence of it poses an existential threat to PlayStation’s winning formula: full priced release marketed as “premium experience”. If Microsoft puts all their eggs in the Game Pass basket, Sonys formula looks a lot less appealing.

They are trying to get a deal pass, they need Sony to agree and notify all relevant authorities they do not object to the deal.

From the point of view of Sony the best strategy is what they are doing right now: not agree to any deal if they think this might not close. Right now Microsoft is spending a lot of time and effort on it. The only danger for Sony is if they will overshoot, deal passes without concessions from Microsoft, and CoD goes exclusive starting next year.

Sony don't have to comment. These discussions are private and are still ongoing, the regulators are the mediators.

Not sure what people expect. They don't have a duty to respond to Microsoft's constant attempts to make all of this public via the media.

my guess is that they wanted Sony to shut up, because they are the only ones pushing against it in any real way.
that would make the takeover smoother. but I also think that no matter what MS does with CoD it won't change the outcome, it will only delay it

CoD is mostly a distraction. Sony just want to block the ABK acquisition, period.

And to be honest, I don't blame them. They didn't oppose the Zenimax deal and what happens a couple of years later: Phil gets daddy Satya to open his wallet again for a truly gargantuan acquisition.

If they let this slide, what are MS going to Borg-up a couple of years from now? EA? UBI? Whatever, its likely to be smaller than the ABK transaction.

This has literally just been discussed in the primary thread for the acquisition and isn't true.

You don't offer a decade for the IP that is the primary contributing factor for the valuation of a company you are attempting to acquire just to "shut up" a competitor. It is the regulators who ultimately decide whether or not the deal goes through and are the ones who need to be made happy/comfortable, not Sony.

Ubisoft would be a stretch for most people to acquire as you'd have to absorb circa 20,000 employees.

For Microsoft that would be increasing their headcount by around 10%.

Sony feels so entitled to call of duty marketing deals 😁 yeah, I agree with those that say Sony's afraid of call of duty on gamepass, that's it.

I think you hit the nail on the head here, I also think that Sony is more concerned with cod on gamepass than anything else.

Sony likely won't accept because they are hoping the regulations will block the deal, if it goes through then maybe they change their mind.

That's quite generous of Microsoft. They have every right to keep CoD all to themselves but I'd have expected an agreement with Sony to keep it on PS for something like maybe 3-5 years.

Well, if Sony don't respond or knocked it back then they can suck it up. Microsoft should now refuse to put new CoD and all other Acti/Blizz games on Playstation stores 🤷‍♂️

I'm pretty sure Sony cannot legally make their own version of COD. Making a game LIKE COD is not the same.

Not really, this deal is being looked at from a perspective of protecting consumers choices not protecting Sony's business. Although Sony can have a say the commission are not a mediator between Sony and Microsoft like you are saying. It's the regulators job to make an independent decision using all the facts. Because Sony and Microsoft are the two main players in this (Not sure why Nintendo's stance in this is being side-lined so much but that's another debate entirely) they can make their own case but this isn't/shouldn't be a case of pleasing Sony. From a consumer point of view I would love to see a more even playing field where Sony's current business model is seriously challenged and their position weakened so they have to be more consumer focussed and are not able to command the industry like they do now. If Sony's current business model doesn't work when competing with another party on an equal footing to them then it's upto Sony to change the way they operate. As consumers we will benefit from it.

I really don't understand why this has gone from being about putting the consumers first to being about protecting Sony's huge market share.

It appears from a glance that Phil Spencer is obviously not fully committed to telling the truth if he initially said he wouldn’t take it away from PlayStation, but then offers them a 10 year deal. Those two things don’t really connect so that’s quite interesting.

On the other side of the coin, 10 years is pretty decent. Sony should start to think about how they can capitalise on the MP market, especially with Bungie now with them who can make a decent online shooter.

Sony have a shit load of great IPs just sitting there that they can use, get to it Sony.
