Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

It seems MS enjoys messing with us. Why wouldn't you communicate that nothing is coming this week? They know a lot of people are waiting each Tuesdays and Thursdays for the announcements.

At a time when people are questioning whether MS are letting this run out of steam having a whole week of fuck all is not a good look.

Because there is nothing official saying it should come every tuesday or thursday.

I get that there is nothing official but when you release for a few months each Tuesdays and Thursdays, I guess we can call it kind of official, no?

Well its a pattern wich people made official. But we had many times also nothing coming on tuesday or thursday.

Oh no, nothing for a week, the sky is falling, BC is cancelled.

We literally just received GTA IV a month ago. I don't think we should be jumping to conclusions.
That's my problem. Each month seems to be one or two big games and then just some stuff no one cares about. Like, who was asking for the stupid movie tie ins to Cars 2 and Meet the Robinsons?

It'd be nice if more publishers joined in on BC so we wouldn't just have to rely on a few big names from a few publishers.

I'd be nice if Msoft didn't have to ask permission to do so. Just like the ps2 could play nearly all ps1 games (i think there were 10 or so incompatible games)

The fact they need to ask permission to make a game BC really seems like the byproduct of companies making so many remastered editions

As a matter of fact, my son played Cars 2 yesterday on Xbox One. And I can tell you that he was thrilled lol

I don't care if there's a dry spell, but this is a perfect example of a company's lack of communication leading to annoyance among it's users. If there aren't any games ready for release, then why not just check in on Twitter: "Sorry guys, nothing this week, but we're still working hard" etc. etc. The silence from these companies baffles me sometimes, and that applies to Nintendo and Sony as well.

It's a byproduct of the way BC on XB1 works. Each BC release is essentially a new XB1 published game release, so they can't release games without permission and the legal clearance to do so. That fact also means the publishers are in complete control over the release of their BC games and can play all sorts of games with release dates, remasters, and pre-order bonuses.

But for example: Resident evil 4,5,6. I'm not expecting to see those becoming BC because they released those remastered editions. I don't think Capcom will let Msoft make the older versions BC.

Waiting to include it as pre-order bonuses doesn't bother that much. But why not simply make your game available for people to buy now? I mean, you could still have it available as a pre-order bonus later down the road anyways.

You have to remember, they might want to get some of the licensed games done before they become delisted. Who knows if Disney will continue to allow those games on the store for much longer.

And, just a side note, I actually was told by a number of people on Reddit that they were legitimately excited for Cars 2.

That didn't stop the Bioshock trilogy from going BC after the remastered editions came out.

Though I think in the case of Resident Evil, Capcom is probably not motivated to allow for BC because they're riding a positive RE7 wave right now, and they can generate some new sales off the X1 versions of the previous three.

Let's see what happens when RE7 cools its heels.

bc titles slowing down because resources were split and re-allocated to the og xbox bc program. needs to have a viable library for the e3 announcement "available tomorrow!".

... i wish :)

If I was a betting man, and assuming something positive is the reason for the lack of releases I'd say they are working on getting the 360 emulator ready for Windows 10. That would make commercial sense more than OG Xbox, waiting for E3, game service or taking a bit longer to get the most requested games working.

I'm not expecting anything for Tuesday and we'll be lucky if we get a bone tossed our way on Thursday.

Didn't MS say that all the 360 titles they published would be made BC? There's quite a few omissions from that so far. Forefront in my mind is Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2. It doesn't help that Geometry Wars 3 is really bad.

None of the three 360 games I worked on that were published by MS have made it to BC. Gameroom will never come to BC.

I imagine they are just super busy. GDC just happened, PAX is about to kick off, they are about to launch a new game subscription service, prep is being done for E3, and they are preparing to launch a new console. Every team within Xbox is likely busy as hell.

Or the list is getting smaller. I mean alot of games are maybe just not possible because of legal stuff. Like soundtracks, car license for in games etc.

What games did you work on and why would Gameroom not come to BC? Licensing issues?

I'd assume it's licensing issues. Even stuff I've downloaded before (like the "packs" or whatever they're called) I think are some of the things that are showing up as "Content Not Available" in my download history.

Licensing issues (or "we can't be assed paying, or even checking up how much it would be.") can cover a lot of things. Licenced games, licensed material in a game like a car (wasn't there a 360 game with Pepsi machines everywhere?), licensed music like pop songs, licensed actors and other stuff where there was a time limit on a license.

Middleware Licensing issues might also be a big part why there are very few enhancement to games on X1. If they changed the executable and it could be argued the BC version was a different SKU, then that would, in theory, affect things like middleware licenses that were aranged on a per platform bases (like audio middleware Wwise for example).

If its just the bare 360 version then it would be ok for modet but every license was different.

tl;dr still waiting for Blops 2

This would be great for them to do. Not sure what the publisher rights they need to contend with are, but it makes sense for a publisher to want a game that was available on XBOX 360 and not on PC to be available for purchase digitally through XBOX 360 emulation on PC. It would make an instant large audience for RDR, Bayonetta, and others in that situation.

They said lots of things, even showed box art at the reveal for games still not supported.

Am the only that thinks 2 is much worse than 3?

Both don't hold a candle to Evolved though.
