Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

By their own admission in interviews back in the day, the 360 OXbox emulator wasn't very well software engineered (they basically put it together by the seat of their pants until Halo 2 started running), was extremely fragile, and was damn near custom for every single game, and still had bugs, and also wasn't set up to interact with the 360 OS so it booted you completely off Live when you loaded into it.
Might be worth noting that a "hacked" version of that emulator was released, allowing any game to be played via BC (or at least, attempted to run) so long as you had a JTAG 360. The biggest surprise for me was finding that Rallisport Challenge 2 actually ran perfectly on it.

I have another half dozen Xbox games in another storage bucket but this will do. Of my 30 odd games, none run un-compromised on a 360; it's a grab bag of slowdown, crashes, audio bugs and incompatibility.

I tried playing Outrun C2C recently and while it looked nice I was quickly reminded of the looooooooong "has this crashed?" load times.
I was heartbroken when the original Outrun 2 ran like shit on 360. All I wanted was for the slowdown to be cleared up, now my only hope is that it eventually gets emulated on PC.

BTW I actually found that Quantum Redshift did run perfectly for me, and the upscaling looked great. My memory could be failing me, but I recall thinking it could pass for an early 360 XBLA title.

While we're talking bugs with the 360's BC, let's not forget PGR2 with the completely black car select screen (I think?). You really have to wonder what sort of level they were testing these games to before releasing them. Forza ran like arse as well, while everything ran it was at a far lower framerate than the OG Xbox.

Halo 2 also had the weird ghosting issue and choked on a certain multiplayer map if someone picked up the active camo.

It was bad enough that they pulled that map entirely out of Halo 2 matchmaking to accomodate 360s, and in the shutdown celebration years later people were like "wtf where did this new map come from" because they never looked through the custom games list before

Yea after seeing E3 come and go with no mention of Crackdown 1 or 2 I'm starting to wonder if it's not that they were saving it for a special bonus deal thing and more of that dreaded 'licensing' crap holding it off. >_>

They were.

Movies went through the whole "crap, we didn't license this for home video" back when VHS hit its prime in the late 80s and early 90s.

A number of iconic films hit home video with "modified" soundtracks because the original music wasn't cleared. Some examples are "Jaws" and "Sixteen Candles."
I actually did not know this! Thanks for the info!

Wrestling DVDs and streaming versions actually have this issue too

My original post about using the 360 Emulator for the original Xbox for the Xbox one, was just to get the games out faster. After the initial Xbox One launch disaster, I always felt Microsoft abandoned their original gaming identity. I don't think you'll ever beat Nintendo or Sony for Japanese style games. However for me the Xbox was always about the Western version of Gaming, with the ocassional Japanese game thrown in. I hope that's what Phil is thinking when he says he wants to go back to the original idea of the Xbox.

Unfortunately the lure of books caught me, so no games today

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but how will games cover for the black and white buttons the original Xbox controller had?

Just like OG BC on Xbox 360 they will be mapped to the LB and RB buttons.

Zeta Oni beat me by a few seconds.

This seems like a bad reason to not let all the discs work

It's not just about appearing on the console.

Emulators that kicks you in the old console mode and let's you play all the games have been done before, and people usually abandon it early because of that. For example, look how OG XBOX was abandoned last gen towards the mid of the generation because usage dropped of a cliff.

Having the BC game released as just as any game, with most of the new features is one of the reasons that make BC usage go up with the passing of time.

It sucks not having all games, but I think it's better for the future, and going forward we know that all games will be supported.

Ah yes, Backwash. They originally addressed it by disabling starting grenades and then they just pulled it from matchmaking totally. Disaster.

they were mapped to the bumpers on the 360, which actually worked pretty well, considering a lot of games just mapped the L1/R1 buttons from PS2 ports to black/white on Xbox anyway. There were also actually third party controllers for the Xbox itself that had duplicate black/white buttons on the shoulder

I dunno, I feel like it would've been offered as a preorder bonus by now. I'm honestly not sure if it'll be BC this year.

Crackdown 3 and Lucky's Tale aren't available for digital pre-order yet for some reason.

My guess is they're both being given for free with One X pre-orders.

Crackdown 1 and 2 BC will probably be Gamescom announcements with CD3 pre-orders going live at the same time.

Interesting...

Albert Penello said they're planning something special for pre-orders (or words to that effect).

It seemed awfully strange that the only 2 games that both come out the same day as the One X couldn't be pre-ordered digitally.

I figure, Microsoft are planning on giving those 2 games away for free because let's be honest, they're being sent to die. By bundling them with the console it's a 1-2 punch. People can swallow $499 with 2 free brand new games, but they also get to boast big sales for both games with both bundled sales as well as individual.

By not taking digital pre-orders, they can also avoid the mass refunds when the bundling is announced which wouldn't have looked good for the financials.

Would be very nice for me, as those are the two games I plan to pick up with the One X, but I just can't see them leaving money on the table, especially with something like Crackdown 3. I hope I'm wrong though.

Throw in a game library trial and it's a great deal, the majority of day one X1X buyers will be people upgrading anyway.

This sounds strangely reasonable and it would be a master move. I might have to take back everything I've said and preorder if I can get Crackdown 3 and Super Lucky's Tale for free.

sorry, I spilt coke on my my keyboard and the X key is stuck so way more X's get typed than is necessary. it's easy to do, isn't it?

thing is, the xbox one x didnt get a FCC approval yet.. same as for example the snes classic, also no fcc and no preorder. so we have to wait for the fcc approval before we can preorder.

Not in the US and have a SNES classic preordered. Just wondered by FCC stuff is holding up Europe.

With how big this thread about game icons on the Switch has turned into was wondering if this has been bothering anyone else with 360 releases? It's a solid rule with Microsoft that Xbox One games CANNOT have publisher or developer logos on their icon art, and they must have the game art and logo.

This doesn't seem to apply for 360 games though, which frequently include EA, Ubisoft, Activision, etc logos. It really bothers me, it doesn't hinder my enjoyment of the game but it does definitely stop me from pinning them or even installing some of my lesser played games due to how badly they stick out.

Though a few games I've noticed have had their icon changed to remove publisher logos, although I've only noticed it a few times. It seems like a 50/50 split with 360 icons including publisher logos whereas not a single Xbox One game does this.

What bothers me the most is in the promotional image on Xbox's website they don't have publisher logos on the box arts of games that actually do. So they took the time to make this particular graphic look clean but not the actual icons on the system itself?

I think they mostly just batch-made the 360 icons from the original 360 dashboard covers (that the 360 annoyingly has to download every single time you turn the console on) which were often just the original box art jpg

Thankfully you can now sort between Xbox One an 360/XBox titles, but I understand the sentiment.

I really want that! Is it out yet?

That's good to hear, I didn't use BC on the 360 much because of how shoddily it ran some games. Thankfully I think current BC has ironed out all the kinks and we won't lose out on all those nice particle effects a lot of games had.
maybe i can finish Crash Twinsanity now

I really, really want this to happen.

That's the thing, the OG XBOX games that internally ran at HD resolutions are still 480p on 360.
This isn't true. I've played certain games on both platforms and 720p games look better on the 360. Resolutions are hard coded into the XBE files anyway so if you have an HD display it will render at the highest possible resolution it can. Unless you can prove otherwise.

Perhaps I'm not remembering correctly, but I recall on 360 they would render at the same aspect ratio, but with way higher resolution, except for sub native games like Panzer Dragoon.

Conker for instance, looked stellar.

Wasn't that the case too with Soul Calibur 2 on an actual OG xbox? It supported 720p but only outputted at 4:3 AR for that resolution. I didn't have a 720p TV back then though so I couldn't test this
