Man I really hope Sony follow the same formula here. Granted it's probably the first 1 year that we will see big games on cross generations but that will really help the consumers .

knowing how greedy Sony is I don't see it happening but I hope I am wrong

Genuinely wondering how this will be handled on PS5.
On the release of PS4 you could upgrade the PS3 versions of various games like BF4 for 5 or 10 bucks.

It will probably be up to the developer. There are games that entitle you to multiple versions on PSN. Like buy once get it on Ps3, Ps4 and PsVita.
That should be possible with PS5 too.

Obviously is technically very easy, if there are going to be two versions in the making of the game. One PS4 and one PS5, it's just a store thing.
 
I'm definitely buying this on Xbox now, this seals it for me.

I hope Sony does as well. I could see both companies do it for the first two years then drop it there maybe. Hope Sony isnt arrogant and says fuck you want my money but then I just wont buy the ps4 version and wait for ps5 version instead
 
This whole Digital Future is looking fine for me, people were concerned as fuck and I bought like 3 games at the begining of this gen on disc and that's about it. BC, this it makes it way more appealing.

I'm assuming if you buy on the X or One X, you get that version. For Series X, you have to download that version on the console as well. I could be wrong though.
 
Man at a certain point the phrase death by a thousand cuts starts to come to mind. I'm by no means saying that Sony is going to fail this generation. In fact I'm sure they're going to be wildly successful. But with so many little features that Microsoft has and Sony doesn't it really is going to start to affect them in some capacity. They really need to get on top of this stuff sooner than later and address stuff like smart delivery and whether or not you have to buy a game twice across generations.

They will have to up their game for sure.
If both consoles are priced equal sony has to match all these features xbox is coming out with.

At the same time i want xbox to be the biggest competitor in gaming industry so sony is forced to get even better.
Also if xbox fails in console sales again like this gen i am sure it will become an online only sevice ala stadia where they might sell you a basic box with a controller.
 
This is great... So technically right now there could be games that you can get in three places while buying once... Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.

The power of marketing. Cross buy has been a thing for years, publishers just didn't use it because there was no BC.

MS just gave it their own fancy name version. But this feature isn't new.

Side note: I've been seeing a lot of these, "damn that's pretty cool MS is doing this, I wonder if Sony will do the same". 2 years later when the entire industry is following these footsteps. "MS has done nothing for gaming". That's a little annoying :p

That is my hope as well. Makes the next gen transition seamless and without risk.
 
Stupid question, but does anyone know if save files transfer over? Could I start this on the One X then continue on the Series X?

Sony has had so many "consumer" facing things, but they are complete shit at marketing and giving it fancy name. They had cross-buy, like you mentioned, they have a feature where you can play your friends game remotely and test it out, when you don't have the game. Not a lot of people use it, cause Sony is kinda shit at marketing it LOL The one thing I've always given Xbox credit for is their Marketing. They are masters at Marketing, especially to US consumers and the number show it clearly.

We can go ahead and assume that Sony doesn't have a "smart delivery" of their own and burn them for it now, or we can wait and really roast them when they don't have it. I've just seen so many things get prematurely roasted, or even elevated, to jump to any conclusions anymore.

Cross buy came at a cost. Was around 10 bucks back then like it was for call of duty ghost etc
What this is is a free update as in you can buy the ps4 version and you can update it for free to run on ps5 with all bells a whistles turned on.

Its not the same as having a pro version of the base game as its a simultaneous release.

We dont know if the new consoles will arrive this year so you can still buy the current gen version and upgrade for free on the next gen consoles when they arrive.

The difference this time around will be much bigger between gens and will need some extra work from devs so this is a big bonus.

But PS has not even revealed the console, let's not forget all the other features it will have. So how are so sure already?
 
Cool, now I'll buy this game for my One X if it comes out before the New consoles.

You hear that developers? Nothing wrong with cross-gen titles, but you're not getting my money twice for the same game unless your name is Nintendo!

Pretty sure that's because some PS4 versions were 10$ more than PS3 versions. But if not can you give me an example?
 
Games cost the same for both.
But given the different architecture of the systems it was not just and update for the game you had to get the full ps4 version separate.

Stuff like this is why Microsoft and Xbox are good for the games industry. Have your opinion, but they've consistently pushed gaming forward in a number of ways.
 
This just ensures I'll buy the Xbox One X version at launch, start playing, and then be able to continue on the Series X later. Win win.

Ubisoft is getting MS marketing dollars for this. I wonder if Ubi would have done this otherwise, but still cool for those who might wait to upgrade.
 
I don't see Sony having anything like this lined up. They just went through hell getting BC working it sounds like. They might offer a discount maybe.

Ubisoft and MS are also marketing partners for Valhalla so it might even be next gen exclusive for a little while.

Wont really affect me as I tend to play on the target platform and not go back to games that often. I am curious as to how the price will be affected. Picking up Valhalla after six months will usually see a 25% discount for Ubi titles at least. Either the discount will evaporate to prevent people upgrading to an xsx game while the XsX game retails at full.
 
So let me get this straight, if I buy the new AC for Xbox One X, and then when Xbox Series X is released, I can take that same previous gen game, put it into the series X and have total access to the next gen Xbox Series X version with all next gen upgrades?

Probably digital as usual and with disc as "patch"...which would be probably full download, with disc being licence "key"...
