They are Warhammer 40k inspired anyway.

They are basically this:

EDIT: However I can somehow not see whatever image you are discussing :/

It's a nu-muton.

Now that the aliens have access to our DNA, they’re using it to manipulate their own genomes. We’ve already seen it at work with the improved Sectoid, and now we’ve discovered the Muton has also received a dose of human genes.

The benefit of human genetics means the Muton now pairs its established brute force with the cunning intellect of the human mind. This makes the Muton more deadly than ever.

Our field recon has informed us of several skills available to the new and improved Muton. They are able to use Suppression against targets to reduce their Aim, while also providing a free reaction shot should that suppressed target decide to move. Additionally, Mutons still possess the Alien Grenade, allowing them to deal damage to groups of soldiers. So, be mindful of your soldiers’ spacing in the field!

But the Muton is still a brute in close combat. Their weapons are equipped with bayonets, and the Mutons won’t hesitate to close in on your soldiers to use them. And the Muton has the ability to Counterattack as well. Every Muton has a chance to ignore melee damage and instantly respond with a melee strike of their own. Rangers should keep this in mind when going in for the kill.

It looks like XCOM's post went live before it should. Good thing you can't really fully remove something from the internet once it's gone live.

I absolutely adore the new art direction.

Edit: So I just found this:

Are those LGA1150 or LGA1151 socket boards?
Edit: I'm stupid for not googling. Look sexy

Yeah, that's not something new.

I do like the implication of a bunch of gene-modded Mutons sitting around discussing tactics, though:

Muton A: "Okay, so since we started doping on human DNA, we've been thinking..."
Muton B: "A lot! And not just about futbol!"
Muton A: "Right, right. So anyway, the humans are clever. Diabolical, even, and they've got this tactic that's just..."
Muton B: "It's next-level shit, man! MLG!"
Muton A: "Right right. So how it works is - are you ready for this? - we shoot at the humans. A lot."
Ethereal: "... that's it?"
Muton B: "That's it! 320 no-scope, dense smoke err'day!"
Ethereal: "Make this man an Elite!"

Hehe this made me laugh a lot :-D

Oh my God such terrifying new abilities.

So I've finally finished enemy unknown/within...I'm a bit bummed the sequel isn't a follow up.
Unless
the visions the volunteer had weren't about the ship exploding but what the humans will be doing with their newfound tech they weren't ready for, and thus ascended and went back in time to handle their evolution himself. Creating a company, using aliens and messing with dna to further human/alien evolution in order to prepare them for "what's coming" or just because he believes it's the only path, basically fulfilling the role of the uber ethereal and becoming the final boss.
The idea that another big alien is the mastermind (or the uber etheral again) and pulling the strings of a political and commercial empire in 2 doesn't feel right to me, it's probably an human.

Or it's just something else entirely! Oh well, I need to know now.

Writeup on the Sharpshooter class, which is basically the old Sniper class: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xcom-2-exclusive-class-reveal-the-sharpshooter/1100-6429035/

The best part:

There's a new sniper ability called Death From Above, which allows you to get an extra action when you kill an enemy at a lower level than you. That's on the sniper tree. Then if you have the pistol ability, Fan Fire, you can then use that free action to use Fan Fire with your pistol after using your sniper rifle. What Fan Fire does is it lets you shoot three times at a single target.

So pistols finally useful? Yes please!

(Although apparently some people were saying fully upgraded plasma pistols were amazing pre-EW?)

I'm loving the sound of the weapon customization. UFO Afterlight had something like that, very cool beans.

Also: stop trying to make pistols happen, they're not gonna happen. (Unless we can go all Guns Akimbo with them, which would be awesome).

I don't know what are you talking about. Plasma pistols saved my ass countless times and automatic ones are helpful AF in case of emergency in LW. I always make sure to pack one with my sniper in case some creep sneaks too close.

I've just never encountered a scenario I wouldn't be better off repositioning, throwing a grenade, or straight-up reloading rather than switching to the pistol.

I think it depends a lot on whether or not you're 'tech sprinting'. In the core game, you can blow through the tech tree so fast that you never really have time to fully fill-out equipment of any of the tech tiers, so pistols fall to the wayside. Long War tends to restrain your tech development enough that you actually have time to build a full kit of gear from a tier before you reach the next one.

(Also depends on difficulty level, of course. You can afford to go much heavier into research in Casual than Impossible.)

A Plasma Pistol with gunslinger in vanilla XCOM was about as powerful as a Plasma Rifle. I used Snipers as my covert operative since they could use pistols so well.

But yes, grenades are good.

Burrowing Chryssalids that can spawn three more if they kill you and ambush from underground...

Do we get flamethrowers? Because this really is a case of "KILL IT WITH FIRE!"

At least they can't fly.

Jesus fuck.

They can bury underground, all their attacks can poison you, and if you (or a civilian) die from anything while poisoned, you turn into a cocoon, which when hatched turns into 3 chryssalids.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

They're a little more fragile. That's it.

We're all so fucked.

Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
I can't see how 3 chyssalids from one coccoon isn't absolutely disgusting. Yeah, 'chance' to coccoon, and unknown number of turns, but from a non-ironman perspective, I can't see many people not resetting, lol.

At least Firaxis recognizes the dangers there in the article, and hopefully there'll be anti-burrow tech.

god damn and those save the civilian missions were already touch and go. Now every civie lost is a 3 chryssalid spawn.

Welp, rushing flamethrowers.

Well, on the plus side, you can destroy the cocoons before they hatch. Presumably, this'll be easier than trying to down a 10 health zombie doing its best to eat yo brains.

My old friends... I so despise these things, at least until I unlock the laser + plasma tech and turn the tables on them. These new abilities make them all the more deadly :(

I am giggling like an idiot in a combination of excitement and terror. I want this game now.

I hope we still somehow get Chrysalid zombies, though. They're as much a staple to the franchise than the 'lids.

Wouldn't surprise me if there was some new enemy that can infect corpses or something, causing Chrysallids to spring into the map even if they're not there at the start. It'd be the XCOM thing to do.

We're doomed.

The aliens have already infected human food sources.

There's a little Chrysalid in all of us.

Pectoids can make zombies with their minds, so there's your zombie quotient filled.
