Its a great tactic suggesting that something will be hard to obtain BEFORE you've even released the price. THEN when the price comes in higher than you were expecting the manufactured scarcity of the product will already have cemented your decision to buy it no matter the cost.

I don't see how fans are trying to spin this into a positive... If MS did the same thing everyone would be laughing and talking about how Timdog and Eastwood would already have secured consoles.

This is most likely just a marketing ploy to drive up anticipation. If Sony really wanted to restrict who gets to preorder, the link wouldn't be a generic link that you can share with anyone. It would be some kind of private link that requires authentication and can only be used once to sign up.

More than ever Playstation is a booming global brand and even 10 million units by March means supply will be stretched incredibly thin across all their 'hotspots'. I see no problem in taking, say, 10-15 percent of that stock and giving first dibs to their most ardent users through direct pre-orders. Those who are active & eclectic spenders in their ecosystem and will be more likely to support the Kena's, Pathless', and Deathloop's of the world, not just grab Spidey and play FIFA between the next flagship 1st party release.
It's not like the vast majority of stock won't still be up for grabs, as per usual, at retail(where scalping is as easy as using friends/family).

Yea, it's all fun and games, you get into the PS5 pre-order club, have some casual conversation at the bar about Ghost of Tsushima or The Last of Us 2 and how they're the best games ever, and then "Achievement" slips out when you talk about how hard it is to get all of the trophies in the games, the crowd around you blinks and looks at each other but shrugs it off, you don't even notice your own slip, until you ask one of them "What's your gamerscore?" Instead of "Whats your level?" Next thing you know you're ass down on the floor in the bathroom and they've got a rubber band around your nuts ready to eunuch you, because secretly you like BOTH CONSOLES.
This is a pretty amusing process overall, I'm thinking this might mean that there will be a severe drought for PS5s at launch, lets hope not, because the real winners are the scalpers in that scenario, not even first day adopters deserve that kind of money hate.

L O L i'm sorry but anyone who preorders a piece of hardware they don't know the price of is a complete idiot, let alone knowing from previous experiences that the first batch of any console always has issues from the PS4 spitting out discs to the Switch's screen glitching.

Only console I had an issue with a launch / early version was the 360. Never had anything with my PS4 base console and my Pro is loud but never stopped working.
