?? I have only pointed out the OP's funny situation in which he uses Welfare as the source of all his XS sales estimates but then decides to ignore Welfare's LTD figures and invents a different one...

That said, I have no hope for anything, the figures are what they are and surely MS would like them to be better at the beginning of the generation. The fact is that these figures have already been assumed when they themselves predict sales similar to XBO.

Rather, I see the hope of some here that the possibility that XS will not surpass XBO and that will lead MS to end the console business and become a 3rd party, doom and ruins...

Here's a hint, a very simple way of looking at this stuff, if it were doing anywhere near as well as the XB1 (not even mentioning 360), sales figures wouldn't be such a guarded secret.

this is so obvious that it shouldn't have to be said, but there is only ONE reason a platform holder will not talk about sales.
You are not discovering penicillin... It is clear that MS would have liked to have better sales figures for XS at the beginning of the generation but it is clear that they have already assumed that this will not be the case and hence they have estimated figures similar to XBO .

From here, it is clear that this generation wants to make money on the software part and their commitment to PC on day one of launch is a double-edged sword that harms any sales potential of XS.

Some of you want to think that selling ~45-55 million XS consoles is linked to the fact that the generation of MS gaming division will be a total failure when it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, the fact that the XBO generation was more profitable than the X360 should be significant to some that should already know that the success of the Xbox gaming business is not intrinsically linked to the Xbox console.

"Gamepass is the best value in gaming," they said. Well, they were right, you don't need to buy the Xbox hardware or software to play their games. Jokes on you MS Shills.

Lower than I would have guessed at the start of the gen. This is also in line with what many expected when MS starting treating PC as equal to their consoles. If one does have a decent PC, not many reasons to get another box. I just hope they don't completely exit the console market. PlayStation needs competition in the console space.

The laughing emoji doesn't really fit and get across your point (which is to troll) when nothing controversial is said. If I were you, I would have dropped the empathy one. It fits better.

Problem for MS remains that more and more continue to build their digital libraries on PS which will carry over into future generations. So they enter next-gen on the backfoot even more so than the start of this gen arguably.

But if she had the power she would need to stop releasing Xbox exclusives on day one for PC and GamePass.

Everyone saw this coming, except for the fans that can’t/won’t ever say a bad word about Xbox. They’re all going down with that ship.
 
I've been telling people for months, so it's a relief to see people finally picking up the pieces here.

Microsoft is in a dire situation and all the obfuscation that they can conjure won't change that.

I can't imagine anyone will be looking to buy an XS next year. I've admonished people who think the PS5 will sell 12 million in Q3FY23, but I do think that it could sell 9+ million. That's devastating to Microsoft from a mindshare perspective. For the second holiday season in a row, anyone who wants a PS5 will be able to get one and they have another banger of a title to go hand in hand with the console.

I really don't think people understand what that means, especially as much of this will be concentrated in the West. What it means is that anyone who asks "What gaming system should I buy?" is going to have the same answer... A PS5... it's what everyone's friends got for Christmas. Buy An Xbox and not have the kid be able to play Spider-Man when that's what everyone is playing now?

That's how the N64, Saturn, Gamecube, Dreamcast, and OG Xbox got roasted. And to be frank N64, GameCube, and even OG Xbox had bigger titles to keep them in the mindshare than XBS does now. This only gets worse when the PS5 Pro comes out to no competition.

GamePass is poisoning the Xbox brand. We're going to see how Microsoft handles that poison. If they stop doing Day 1 on PC and/or Day 1 on GamePass. The reason why GamePass isn't growing fast enough is because the Xbox consoles aren't selling fast enough.
 
Also, people don't ask what games Sony makes and what games Microsoft makes on a console. The vast majority of consumers have no idea. It's why Sony rebranded so many times and finally landed on PlayStation Studios as a moniker because they want to build that reputation like Nintendo.

People care about what console their friends have because they don't know that cross-platform play works on most games now, but also because they want to play the same games and there are SOME exclusives. If you're a FF or Square Enix fan would you get a PS5 or Xbox? If you like Japanese games at all? Which console? If you wanted to play baseball before, you HAD to have a PlayStation. The most core baseball fans associated baseball with PlayStation. Sony is selling units to xbox fans and generating revenue from gamepass (or at least MLB is) but they're still getting the association.

Games come out for almost every platform now, but Sony has done enough to differentiate itself as the place to play and that is communicated to everyone.

I remember getting a Game Gear as a kid and I can tell you that was the wrong choice. When you're on a school bus and want to borrow someone else's game during a field trip, you're SOL.

Is it time they stop cancelling games on ps5? MS have a hard on for Nintendo but always so bitter about playstation.

This. The longer this type of thing goes on, they harder it is to pull people out of Sony and Nintendo ecosystems.

Phil even said it himself. They lost the worst generation to loose last gen because digital ecosystems were being built.

The more units they put between the PS5 and XBS the more difficult and expensive it will be for Microsoft to get exclusive deals. Either companies will refuse because they don't want their games to end up like X1 exclusive games or they'll cost an absolute fortune to the point where it doesn't make financial sense for Microsoft to make the deals.

The biggest thing Microsoft could do would be to get 3 months exclusivity for GTA6 and we'll see if they're able to do that. The game will probably launch right before the holidays which would up the cost of doing that too.

Imagine you have next year 70 million units that your game isn't going to touch... That's a tough pill to swallow.

When the time comes for the axe to fall though, it'll fall hard.

The Xbox brand has been so utterly poisoned by GamePass and Day 1 PC that I think we're at the point where they can't recover.

They obviously have to make a play at some exclusivity for GTA6, so we'll see if they get it, but aside from that this generation is over. Done. Finished. Finito.

The latter delivered essentially no quality mass-appeal FP games for 1.5 gens and gets promoted. Shows why Xbox has a management problem. They clearly aren't running an organization where they promote people on the basis of merit.

They're getting promoted because they're at the end of their rope. There is no one else to run the ship and they aren't bringing in anyone external to right the ship at this point.

It's sink or swim.

I bet there are some people at Xbox that are surprised by them. I agree though, I am an old school PC gamer that has played many MS PC games in my time and will continue to do so. The issue I see for Xbox/MS in this scenario is that they will have less control over the PC market. If they had succeeded (the way they wanted) in the console space they would have had a lot more influence and ability to manipulate the market. In that regard, they have failed. I wonder how many generations of traditional consoles they have left? One? Two?

If Sony in the best position right now, why they are restructuring?
 
And this is where they went wrong.

When they bought Zenimax, they should have dissolved the existing Xbox Game Studios publishing business and put all the existing MS Xbox game studios under Zenimax.

Zenimax has troubles of its own, plus no experience running a platform. Todd Howard is on his way out and I bet he sets up a new studio before teh end of the decade.

In the same vein, you can't put Bobby Kotick in charge either.

They made their choice to focus on GamePass and Day 1 PC but neither model is a healthy model and the combination is absolutely poison. No one is going to come in and fix that.

Let's say you bring in a new CEO and they say GamePass is canceled and PC Day 1 is over. You'll have a run on the bank and a lot of people will simply leave Xbox and more importantly perhaps, very few people will have the trust to buy anything Xbox at that point.

So you say, let's just stop Day 1 PC... but that directly impacts the growth of GamePass and maybe even GamePass subscribership... meaning you immediately lose maybe 15-25 percent of GamePass users... You've essentially killed GamePass anyway...

Microsoft is in a no-win situation. So the best choice is to let the people who brought you to the dance finish the dance out. I think they have one maybe two years left before it's no longer feasible.

MS has two problems: not just a much lower number of consoles sold, but also a customer base that (because of gamepass) buys relatively few games compared to PS5/Switch owners. If MS wants to get an exclusive GTA 6 deal it's going to cost them a lot. And I don't think Rockstar would want to piss off its largest customer base when launching their game of the decade.

I see where you're trying to go with this. (All of the moves MS has made), but that currently means jack. You saying PHIL climbed higher is weird since I was not talking about Phil's career, nor was I talking about the present.
Now if 5 years from now MS is in a totally different/better position and at that point we look at the past 15 years as whole, then your comment might hold weight.

After Halo, Forza, and Starfield... I don't see anything that is going to propel hardware sales, especially next year.

There is going to be a rapid decline in sales as a result.

Avowed and Hellblade... aren't going to cut it. I think next year will probably be the last year of notable sales for the Xbox unless something drastic happens, massive price cut and/or GTA6 exclusivity, even timed.

Is something like GTA6 exclusivity a realistic possibilty though after recently spending so much on Actiblizz? Obviously MS has the money for that easily but are they really going to give carte blanch funding to xbox like that?
