Playstation sold 3x the amount of consoles in one quarter that Xbox sold all year.

Yes thank you for kicking in this open door for me Cap Obvious. Me and my "brothers-in-arms" have never claimed any of us represent a majority opinion. Again you invalidating personal grievances with a hobby with the profits of a corporation is highly reductive and quite frankly highly drone-like. I hope you find happiness in Sony's massive profits. Personally I am still waiting for the games to make my PS5 purchase worthwhile. Maybe that game is DS2.
Nice try bullshitting your way out.
I do understand grievence of crowd of old and forgotten who were once a prime audience for game companies and now have to crawl in some backwater niche, begging for some attention.
But you really should know your place, even in your grievence - Sony is not "faulty" as per your out-of-touch claim, it's as healthy as it can get. It's your fault that you can't adapt, stuck in the old ways, and market moved forward leaving you behind.

And of course I happy with Sony massive profits, same way I was disappointed by Sony underperformance in PS3-4 era when brainless fans hailed "competition" aka price wars. Because all things ultimately requires money and more money Sony has, more non-standard and experimental things we might see. They still need to think a way to expand their market even if they knocked off some of their competition.
I like rich Sony initiatives like Portal, China/India Hero projects etc. Much better than when Sony calculated every penny and played it extra safe.

You can discuss whatever you want
Just don't forget that yours is only opinion even if you have some brothers-in-arms sharing it. It doesn't mean it's a truth or anywhere near it.
In reality it might be opinion of vocal minority based on faulty assumption that you represent significant portion of gaming society (including general one, underrepresented on forum), thus overweight yourself and your opinion. The real society might want different things and different direction Sony to go, and Sony will go where majority of people (and thus money) go, and not where the loudest and most self-entitled speakers on the forum wants them to go. And results clearly shows that Sony clearly know who brings them money, even if it's not you.

Today was quite a reality check for various crowds of naysayers when their fantasies were crushed hard by reality.

When compared with PS4, launch-aligned, Sony is selling consoles to exactly the same people. No more, no less.
That's not true though. 42% of people who bought PS5s last month were new customers.
thhat doesn't answer the question. did PS5 had a decline over 30% in the last quarter?
They had no decline. Sales were up 16% over last quarter.

26-27 million is a good estimate, the 31m was always unrealistic. Looks like they might just squeak past OG Xbox lifetime sells.
Yeah, this confused me. I don't remember their names, but we had that firm estimating ~33M, another one that Take-Two used for their investor slides with ~94M+ current-gen machines, and Welfare's estimate of over 36M. Unless AMD only reports in round numbers—so if they're at 108M but haven't quite reached 110M, they'd say 'over 100M.' But I think I'm reaching with this one, as their wording doesn’t really support it. Realistically, they’d give a bigger number to investors whenever possible.

So is Xbox just above 25 million? Something doesn't add up...

This is just them getting the new numbers that pushed it above 100 million

PS5 sold 9.5m this Quarter so that could have moved it the total consoles from 94 million to 105 million if Xbox moved 1 million which would could have Xbox Series at 30 million

Strange world we live in.. people going crazy excited for hardware sales while we are getting useless remasters and unfinished subpar games running like shit and infested with political nonsense..

I’m really getting old…
Kingdom come deliverance 2 runs great, so has almost every game last year. Rise of the ronin, Astro, stellar blade, Ff7 Rebirth, Indiana jones, metaphor. All finished games, all fun. Diversify your tastes oldy lol

They still below target level and that level is kinda low by industry standards (Sony oversubsidized it's player base)
It's a business, not a charity
Sony during the PS3 era struggled more yet they did so much better. Now they increase the price of their services and cut corners eveywhere (rip quick resume)

The information is out there but it's seens people don't look. But then again, not everyone is as into sales talk as you and I!

That's because they don't care about the economics of it like we do and are solely focused on the console warring. These numbers aren't good for console war so they choose not to see it.

Here I'm just fascinated by the history and the economics.

You're taking this very personally. I don't feel cornered by your stubborness to suck corporate dick. Just perplexed by the amount of brain dead corporate shill-like comments one can spew out without the least bit of self-reflection.

You can go on pretend that Sony's success somehow translates to yours. And I'll continue to shit on Sony when I feel like it :)

That could be it. But then I come back to my other point: Wouldn't AMD prefer to say, 'We've shipped 105M consoles this generation' instead of just 100M? Or do they deliberately keep it simple with rounded numbers in tens?

Absolutely insane numbers. Especially the fact that their profits have tripled from last gen which was already insanely profitable.

And yet they run their business like a bunch of penny pinching housewives. Laying off talented devs from Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Guerrila Games.

Gotta say, this is the opposite of what of what I expected after the MS bought all those publishers, but I dont think anyone expected Xbox to die this gen. Still they made 3x more profit despite selling fewer units and costs of first party exploding. Absolutely nuts.

When compared to an Xbox console that is anywhere from 5 to 10 million behind where the Xbox One is, down 1.7 million is not nothing.

When it's all said and done, do you think the PS5 will be 5-10 million behind the PS4, or 5-10 million ahead in lifetime units?

Man you must be on drugs if you can't see that the PS5 will EASILY pass the PS4 lifetime.

They tripled their profit yet had to increase the price of PS+? Ok.
When your competition is fucking nothing you can do what you want.

Xbox games also release on PS5. They just had the biggest quarter ever. Nintendo is dual purchase for Sony fans anyway, so apparently they are selling this shit too cheaply. Raise it again. Fuck it. They won't lose a single player.

129 million with 75 million PS5s sold means that there are 54 million PS4s still actively playing. I was right on the money with my predictions that we're looking at 125-130 million PS5s sold by the end of the generation. Reality if the MAUs are this high, we're probably looking at closer to 135-140 million if not more...
Just because someone upgrades to a ps5 doesn't mean that it stops generating revenue. Could be used as a secondary system for the kids or traded in. A bunch of the games in the state of play are also coming to ps4 so it's still well supported content wise. I would say there's well over 54 million ps4s in active use. Ps5 prices are still way higher than the price ps4 ended up at, simply put, plenty of satisfied ps4 owners still waiting on price drops or more exclusive games they can't play on their 4.

PSP was born from "lack of competition". And actually most expensive innovation of PS3 - blu-ray also born from Sony being relatively rich, otherwise we would sit on DVD that whole gen, with very negative impact on latter half games in terms of IQ/size. Like Uncharted2 was 20Gb, way beyond DVD size.
And PS4, though carefully crafted, is just a fiasko, its a cheap off the shelf parts console those primary target was to keep RND budget in check. As a result it got outdone by PC to the point it became a problem for Sony.

You might probably think about games front - but there Sony just became focused and concentrate efforts, they were in peril. It's actually that time when Sony cut most of its diversity of games portfolio for "films" games as most impactfull, for which we now hear a lot of complains.

You can go on pretend that Sony's success somehow translates to yours. And I'll continue to shit on Sony when I feel like it :)
I already pointed out my benefits from rich Sony.
And you'll continue to cry in the corner, forgotten by cheery world happy with playstation dominance.

And a few days ago, trying to put both companies in the same bag...

Xbox:
-hardware -29%
-Content/services +2%
-Total gaming revenue -7%

PlayStation
PS hardware +16%
Network Services +28%
Total gaming revenue +16.5%

And one spent over 70b dollars to remain competitive...the other one is "just" Playstation. These numbers really show the gap between these brands, holy shit.

Imagine showing your post back in 2020 when everyone was talking about teraflops and how Series S was gonna bring so many people to the ecosystem.

Yea Sony did so good during the PS3 era that I sold the system and got a 360. If it wasn't for Xbox spitting in my face during the Xbox one reveal Sony would have never got me back as a customer.

Crazy! One console sold 20M with a Pro only a couple months on sale and two consoles the whole year could only do 4. Phil is a genius! Without the Series S, it probably would have only done 2.4.

Really great quarter from Sony, and there’s still two big second wind spikes to come - GTA 6 and an expected price cut later in the life of the console.

They’ve certainly made all the right moves this gen. I don’t even agree with the doom and gloom about software. There’s a lot of stuff to play, and more and more games coming out.

Key expansion market might also be China. They’re focusing a lot of effort there in developer outreach. Massive population + booming economy.

Literally a perfect post here. Nobody seems to thinking about the bolded that O Ozriel said here. China and Chinese games will be KEY 2025 and beyond. Please believe!

WHAT?! The Xbox Series consoles sold 4 million in the calendar year of 2024?! No WAY! I thought it did close to 6 million.

Seriously though, how and where are they writing down the many hundreds of millions (if not billions) on all their canceled Live Service games? Concord, Factions, Bend, Bluepoint, Deviation, Horizon MMO, Twisted Metal, etc.... There was some very serious money flushed down the toilet on all these, how are they hiding it? They haven't had anything outrageously successful enough offset all of them.
Perhaps it never actually ended up costing hundreds of millions or billions and that was just the FUD team at work?

Actually they haven't laid off anyone! And their games are better than ever! And their online play is more free than ever before! How else would they make record profits otherwise huh?!?!?!?!
