Nvidia Shield Thread

Can anyone help me with some recommendations on the best way to get 2 USB ports on the shield?

Is there an OTG cable that folks know of that could hook up 2 Dualshock 4's or am I better off going with an OTG + USB hub?

Now that Jedi Outcast and Academy are playable on the Shield, does anyone know if there is any way to play the Dark Forces games on it as well??

I remember those games being based on the Doom engine, so can I just place the wads on a Doom engine game for android???

Any help would be appreciated.

There is no port of the Dark Forces engine unfortunately, and as far as I know it's not compatible with any of the Doom source ports available for Android. You can run it in DosBox Turbo though, the Shield should be easily powerful enough to brute-force it into submission.

hmm, any guides on how to achieve that?, other than buying the DOSBox Turbo app of course.

It would be great if all 4 games could be played natively on Shield.

So I got this:

It's already a bit less ugly!

Not seeing much activity in this thread but I'm hoping someone can help me. I just got a microSD card for my Shield and transferred my ROMs to it. I've formatted it as NTFS as suggested by Nvidia. The file structure is browsable, but whenever I select a ROM in RetroArch I just get a black screen. These are ROMs that definitely work, as I was playing them off the built in memory just fine.

Please help if you know anything about this!

*** Looks like user error. I was trying a ROM I had previously played and RetroArch was attempting to load a savestate from the previous session after the directory changed.

Is there anyway to run PPSSPP ROMs off an SD card instead of internal storage? I get the following error if I try:

"Error loading file: Could not find executable disc0:/PSP_GAME/SYSDIR/BOOT.BIN"

Im not sure if this is the right place to ask but here I go, im trying to setup a system where I can play SNES games on 2 different devices and sync the saves.

I found a .srm file which im guessing is the Save Ram Data for games, I manually copy pasted it to the correct folder in my shield yet the Snes9x EX+ is not recognizing it.

I also tried playing the game on my shield, letting it create the .srm file and then overwriting it and nothing.

Are the .srm files a standard with all SNES emus?? the other device im getting the .srm file from is a GCW Zero using Pocket SNES which is based off of Snes9x.

Thanks

I just got my Shield today, and I'm super impressed with it so far. Screen, buttons, sticks, dpad, build quality.. everything is really great. But I can't figure out how to access the internal memory when connected to my pc via usb. I get a bunch of generic folders (movies, pictures, ringtones, etc), but the real guts are obviously hidden. So how do you go about adding roms to this thing? I was interested in doing some PS1 stuff, but the directory that ePSXe shows is completely different from what my PC shows.

edit: I just made a new folder and put the roms in there, and then found the folder via the emulator's browser. I'd prefer to keep everything tidy and self-contained, but this is a workable solution.

Does anybody use this for Everquest 1? Or World of Warcraft?

I know people are using it for FF14, but that game was made for joystick support.

You can also installa Wi-Fi File explorer on the play store and upload stuff without cables to your Shield.

I've all but given up on PC steaming with this thing. I get frame freezes every few min or so of 2-5 sec. That's unplayable and I've wasted far too much time trying to troubleshoot it. Of course the company response is that my home network is the cause. Except that I don't see anything like this happening outside of my time with the Shield.

Hell, I can run Splashtop Remote and experience nothing like this. The problem with that is that my 360 controller would have to be plugged into the PC not the Shield. So I'm pretty annoyed and disappointed with this feature. It's certainly still a cool emulation device but damn, I wanted it for the purpose of extending my PC game media to my bedroom.

If anyone has any suggestions please chime in. I've hard wired my dual band router to my PC and I've checked the wireless range of my neighbors to make sure I'm not getting any interference.

How are you connecting the 360 controller to the Shield??? anyway, assuming you have that figured out, you can use Droidmote to pass the inputs from the Shield to your PC when using Splashtop. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videomap.droidmoteclient&hl=en

I use it all of the time and it works wonders, one caveat is that i havent found a way to map SELECT to something, since the back key on the shield still works as a back key for Android.

I use a micro USB male to female USB adapter to plug in my wireless dongle to the Shield. My PC is too far away to get a good RF signal with the dongle plugged into the PC. I'll have to try out your suggestion about Droidmote. Honestly, though, that's really pathetic for NVidia. I suppose PC streaming is still in beta, but why the hell is Splashtop doing a better job than a device that was supposedly tailor made for this?!

Are some people just sitting pretty with not a hiccup in their stream? I'd love to nail down the cause of this, but at the same time I'm really growing tired of spending my time and energy doing so.

I made a huge fuzz about this issue over at the nVidia forums a couple months ago, I was and still am having the same issues with the nVidia solution.

In the end I just settled with Splashtop, it works almost perfect, I do wonder why the nVidia solution is so shitty when they are most definitely a bigger business than Splashtop.

Is this the sort of thing you are experiencing?? This is a video I made comparing the Streaming quality of nVidia vrs Splashtop, this was before I knew about Droidmote so ignore the comments about controller not working:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1oAy7PkyAk

My theory is that nVidia is capping people with low end GPU, I have a GTX 650, they probably want me to get something more expensive, but I wont because Splashtop works just fine.

Well I have a 4gb 770 so I don't think that had much to do with it. My stream with the Shield isn't exactly like your video. In my case it runs pretty well except that every minute or so I get pauses (freezes) in the stream that last anywhere from 1 to 3 seconds.

San Andreas on max settings murders the battery. I get 3 hours out of it and then it's dead. Even when plugged in it still loses battery faster than it charges. Basically anything that starts the fan going hurts the battery life really hard. For some reason Chrome does too, and that was with like 3 tabs open.

Streaming video over Wi-Fi goes for an incredibly long time though. Like 2% for a 20 minute show. I can have it plugged into my monitor streaming shows all night.

Has anyone been using Nvidia Grid? They just added a couple of games, so the list is now:

Alan Wake: American Nightmare
Darksiders
Darksiders 2
Dead Island (new)
Gas Guzzlers: Extreme
PixelJunk Monsters
Red Faction: Armageddon
Saints Row: The Third (new)
Street Fighter X Tekken
Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition
The Witcher 2
Trine 2

If you have a good enough connection it's a pretty great way of playing some good games for free.

Yeah Grid is pretty nice. It's just sad that streaming those titles cross country (CA to FL) is more playable than streaming from my PC to my bedroom in my own home.

Sunshine State GAF represent!

Hopefully you can get those issues resolved, though. If not, there's always Steam streaming if they ever add support for Android ;)

I can get one for $200 but I'm scared that Nvidia will release the successor with the Tegra K1 this year (if anyone knows more on that please tell me). I should probably chill since I just bought a 3ds XL.

I dont even know why I tried nVidia Grid, im located in Canada so of course it wont work..

But it works, been playing some witcher 2 and its been pretty fucking flawless. amazing stuff, is this a service they want to release with monthly payments a-la onlive?

Unfortunately, I think that they're going to be focusing on licensing the technology to other companies rather than running their own service.

A few weeks ago, my shield crashed and left my PC in streaming mode (with 720p and no sound). I corrected the resolution, but to restore sound I looked in my system tray's sound icon and found that HDMI out (or something like that; please not I was not using HDMI but rather the Shield-PC streaming) was selected instead of my speakers. So I clicked my speakers, and the other option just disappeared. Ever since then, my Shield does not stream audio when streaming. Any thoughts? Really sucks, because the Shield was becoming my preferred way to play a lot of my PC games.

have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Geforce Experience thing, maybe it installs a driver for Sound streaming that got corrupted with your "accident"

So this is awesome.

Kainy just got updated with full gamepad support. I've tested it with RE4 on Steam, and it appears to fully emulate a 360 controller, so if your GPU hardware or the game itself isn't supported by Nvidia streaming you can now do the next best thing.

What is this?? sounds similar to Splashtop and Droidmote, might be more convinient, cant wait to try it.

It basically is the same, but wayyyyy more convenient. It also does fullscreen properly, has a better control scheme for the desktop and automatic focus and zoom for windowed games.

So you're telling me, with that program, I can use my 570 without having to mess around with splashtop, and this program is just as good or better than Nvidias internal solution?

It happened to me recently, I was getting no sound on the Shield while streaming and I went on my PC, alt-tabbed from the game and found a pop-up asking to select the primary sound source and there was the Nvidia HDMI output thingy. Selected it, restarted everything just in case and it worked.

Hopefully that'll work for you too.

I doubt that it's as good as the Nvidia solution without a fast CPU and RAM because of the extra hardware in the Nvidia GPU; but I prefer it to Splashtop because it doesn't require Droidmote, and has better window options (i.e true fullscreen and auto zooming to fill the screen in windowed mode).

How do I mess with key bindings? Playing Call of Juarez the right stick is not working -- but it is working with Splashtop
