Yeah. I thought the newest preview chapter was terrible. But probably not fair to judge it out of context.
 
So, I'm reading the first few chapters of book 1, and damn it's so different from the German version. German is such a clunky language lol.

Also, interesting tidbit, the German translation split the books into several ones. Like, AGOT is actually 2 books in German.
 
It's so nice to see so many with their number of posts per page settings set to 100.

The midwife/wet nurse and milk brothers part is totally believable and Wylla being in that position for Lyanna (and in turn providing a cover story for Ned having an infant with him) is what I subscribe to. I like the theory that Ashara isn't actually dead and she's actually Septa Lemore.

I don't know, she seems to be the jealous sort but I don't know if I'd blame her too much for hating Jon, I'm pretty sure most women wouldn't take too kindly of their husbands bringing back a baby he made with some other woman, even worse when he looks more like a Stark than any of her and Ned's kids besides Arya. I'm kind of hoping Cat finds out R+L=J, maybe even Stoneheart's heart would bleed a little. It seems she and Jon have some unfinished business.

That could possibly be why they asked for a two season renewel.

Hasn't it already been said the Martin has told the show folks how things end? In broad strokes anyway. So they are capable of finishing the TV show without the books.

They're already apparently filming for six months out of the year, doing both seasons at once would probably be straining things quite a bit and possibly hurt the show creatively since they wouldn't have time to breathe and review. Plus there's weather/season issues.

Not quite. George R R martin said that he has finished writing the winds of winter. They are editing it now which can take a while and this started a couple of month ago.

Remember the AFOC and ADWD was written as one book but was edited into two. That is why the events in both books are occuring at the same time.

I've also seen the English version of A Feast split in two volumes. I guess it just depends on the publisher.

I'm a member of Kindle master race. Incredibly better than carrying several pounds of paper around.

He's said no such thing yet, he just talked about the manuscript and what he expected the unedited length to be. There was a lot more to AFfC and ADWD being made into two books than just editing, there wouldn't have been a six year gap between the two. The big issue IIRC was the whole "Meereenese Knot" business along with a lot of rewriting.

ASOS and ADWD were both split in two for their paperback releases in the UK. Although I'm sure your instance was to do with getting a translation out in a timely manner, whereas ours was mainly that publishers like money.

Besides, Bran will be a tree soon, so I don't think anyone is worried about Isaac looking too old. :)

Yeah, all things totaled David and Dan work on a season for 11 and a half months. There simply isn't time to add more filming in the same year.

Yeah, even PM'ing people to play it safe and just stick to the book thread. I still feel more in tune with the show watchers, but I don't want to inadvertently post anything, so I'll just stick to lurking that thread. But Cornballer doing a solid job with these threads, the walking dead thread etc.

yeah, I know. It was a very unfortunate first-post, I have to say... but still, it wasn't the first case in this very same thread. In any case, that spoiler isn't necessarily true... or is it?

I dunno, the titles are drastically different this season. You have to read over *UNMARKED SPOILERS ALL BOOKS* before you even see Game of Thrones on this thread, while GoT shows up first in the no spoiler thread. The threads required a closer look to distinguish last year, not so much this year. If anyone is that worried about spoilers, they should be able to take the 1/2 a second to see if it says unmarked spoilers in caps first or game of thrones first.

It will only feel good until you realize it won't be out for a long time and then it will feel worse than before.

Yeah, I think you are correct. I must have misunderstood or was just very hopeful. But I thought he said that it was content completed with some rewriting and editing being needed.

Just blue would've looked silly but I'm sure if they really wanted to do it they could've done it in a way to make it not look goofy. IMO a midnight blue with his already dark hair could've worked without being overly campy/cheesy and it'd be subtle enough to where it's not distractingly goofy.

I think everyone wishes the book was in the editing phase. =\ Hopefully it makes it out by late next year.

EDIT: D'oh, I meant to edit this into my last post and I guess there's no delete post option... Oh well.

That was never confirmed, and Martin and Elio confirmed a couple weeks ago that TWOW was not finished. However Martin had a BBC interview today where he said he was "well into TWOW; can't link now.

Also his publisher was telling bloggers at Comic Con last year that 2015 is the window for TWOW. I'd be very surprised if it doesn't come out next year. His schedule is empty for most of the early months, and there's really no time for him to miss this deadline. TWOW content could presumably be in next season (Bran).

Summer or fall 2015, imo.

Is he writing (adding content) or editing? This is the question. He keeps saying that he has a manuscript of 1000 or more pages. If this is true then he is editing it.

Here all 5 books have been split into 2 books each. So the German version has 10 books, really. They also have titles that completely deviate from the originals - only Storm of Swords (pt1) and Dance with Dragons (pt2) have been directly translated. The other parts have been named differently ("The Queen of the Dragons" for ASOS pt2 and "The Son of the Griffin" for ADWD pt1). AGOT for instance was split into, translating the titles back into English, "The Lords of Winterfell" and "The Legacy of Winterfell".

Also, not the translation was the issue. Well, I guess it sorta is, but it isn't a matter of the time. German readers are used to translations taking time, and they're still fairly swift (we usually get a translation within 3-6 months depending on the author).

There's a few curiosities about the German book publishing industry, though. The one that affects our books as opposed to other countries' directly is that the paper is significantly thicker and better quality (even with paperbacks). That makes books already thicker by nature.

Additionally, German is a very extensive language - we capitalize every noun, which makes texts naturally longer, the grammar is longer, and many words also are longer by nature. That's also why so many German translations of games are shitty - we have to make due with the text boxes/cutscenes (if dubbed), and with such an elaborate language, it just is bloated.

It doesn't surprise me the books were split apart, but it just was a bit difficult for me getting back into the lore with the show, especially since I never read some of the books in their entirety that way (aside from missing ADWD entirely).

Season 4 is the end of 3 and a lot of books 4 and 5 will be lumped in. There is no way they make it through season 5 and 6 on just books 4 and 5. I don't think there is enough good material to justify it.

I agree. There is no way that we won't be firmly into TWoW territory by season 6. The show is surpassing the books, it is known.

I am actually arguing with a bookthumper about this very matter as we speak. He is absolutely convinced that the show will have at least 10 seasons, and doesn't believe me if I'm telling him that if they draw stuff out for the sake of making the show last longer (and GRRM catching up in writing), the viewership will plummet by the millions they gained.
