That's been a thing since at least Mario Kart 64, just expanded a bit. You were always ultra-vulnerable in a jump.
Too much risk of death on RR to do that properly. IMO it's much better in the Shy Guy Falls dash segment.
It's no differant than the big jumps that started in MK64, no? As far as I can tell the glider sections themselves were created to give you more control over your landing during those bits.

God my driving is so ass. I was just using a max grip kart in single player and it's still throwing me off >_<
I thought you used to be immune to lightning while airborne, but I might be remembering wrong.
On the plus(?) side, it gives the guy shooting the lightning some extra evil cackles to scope the map and hit at the worst time.
Oh yeah, people just flying off the edge. The thrill you get from them moments is worth it.
Red shells is still my worst pet peeve. If you're unlucky enough to get behind someone with three of them, it can ruin your mood.
Except now almost every track has a shoehorned in glider section to screw you over. It doesn't help that the glider sections are so pointless and nothing more than a gimmick.

If you're so concerned, land as soon as possible. Many of them have it as optional.

Many of them take 3 seconds or longer to get across. You really have no choice but to sit there helplessly and hope you don't get nailed. I really wouldn't mind it so much if the glider sections actually had some kind of substance, but they're just there to make the track seem more interesting without serving any meaningful purpose.

Yep, I forgot how to play. Missed three item boxes that game.
Too tired to do the actual math but considering the probability of someone getting a lightning (roughly seems to be 2 per race) and the time of an average race (about 2 and a half minutes on the generous side), the chances of you being hit in that window is incredibly small.
Then you take into account the probability that a track you hit doesn't have any mandatory glider sections or any sections it has is less than a second long.
Also take into account that since punishment for falling is less strict now, you can pretty much get back in anyway.
I am apparently a god at Grumble Volcano. Was flawlessly in first for nearly 3 full laps online (got red'd near the very after I was careless with my items to try and desperately get a super horn in case of a blue shell). Still got second at least though so it wasn't all bad.
It's not a total fluke since I have done very well on the track in prior races.
Cherish it. It won't happen again for a while >_>
