Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

When they showed that picture of the camera I was expecting them to announce it would come bundled with the PS4 from now on. Oh well.

Did the conference planner want to troll the new CEO or what? Everyone (Adam Boyes, Andrew Howse, Scott Rohde, Yoshida) got to announce some cool stuff and he was stuck with the most excruciating, painful, boring part of all of E3 press conferences.

If the Sony conference ended before Shawn came on stage, I'd give it a 8 for LBP this Nov, No Man's Sky, Entwined and all the Boyes announcements.

Shawn' numbers/TV/Apps and etc drops it down to a 6.5 because the pacing was so weird and then it dragged on and on.

But it does.
It's hard to get genuinely surprised when your stuff's been leaked weeks before.
MS shouldn't have announced Horizon 2 beforehand. MGSV trailer leak just before the E3 showing was unfortunate. Bloodborne leak was just plain tragic.

I agree that it does, BUT, when viewing the conferences as a whole, I try to disregard leaks when looking at what is presented.

Don't know about you guys and gals, but Giant Squid appealed quite a bit to me.
Yep. Same here. It captured my wonder. It and No Man's Sky, and Inside from the MS conference.

It surprised me how much Little Big Planet didn't capture it. LBP3 didn't tickle me at all and I loved the first two, but I think the spirit has been lost, replaced with an everlasting gobstopper.

I don't get you, guys. While they're talking a lot about it, it's rather obvious that E3 is NOT for gamers. It's for general public, for non-specialized media outlets, for investors and such. For people who care a little. If Sony needed to show something to NeoGAF they could just upload it to consoles, you know, without wasting money on special effects.

TV part was something rather obligatory, same as mentioning console features and perspectives. It's like "last year we promised and we delivered". Youtube uploading was constantly requested at firmware threads, so why meh? Actually it killed a bit of MS conference for me - lack of console per se. Just games-games-games with humble "exclusive this, exclusive that" muttering in background.

I give a big plus to Sony for not showing driveclub and dragon's dogma. Everybody knows about them already, so thanks for not wasting my time. And a big minus for lack of PS3/Vita content. At least Vita games were mentioned.

And even bigger minus for not delivering on promised console features like standby, remote play for friend and so on.

Really good post. I wouldn't go so far as to say E3 isn't for gamers. It's for gamers like me.

I'm a "gamer" by definition (as I understand it). I play games and I play them often but talking about gaming news all day bores me to tears. You'll only find me on gaming side once in a while when something really big happens and I want to see reactions. Otherwise I'm in OT arguing about cops and Man of Steel.

But E3, for the most part, has been pretty eventful for me. I didn't really know much about Project Beast/Bloodborn outside of a few rumblings. I've seen Sunset overdrive but only some gameplay vids here and there (looks rather boring btw). But GTA5 to PS4 was completely new to me which made me happy because I never got to play it. Never really saw much of the Order. MGSV was COMPLETELY new to me and looked dope as hell (though I was confused out of my fucking mind).

I don't know. I don't see how people can sit around here all day following leaks and expect to be wow'd by these conferences. You're willingly hurting your own experience. I wasn't floored today by any means but I wasn't there just sitting through a conference that I knew everything about beforehand.

You forgot The Order and Planetside 2.

Rest 2014
MS:
Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive, Halo Master Chief Collection (is Fable Legends 2014?)

Sony: The Last Of Us Remaster, Little Big Planet 3, The Order 1886, Driveclub, Planetside 2.

Fable Legends beta is 2014.

The Order 1886 is Feb 2015.

No TLG.
No Crash Bandicoot.
No Syphon Filter.
No God of War.
No showing from Sony London.
No showing from Quantic Dream.
No showing from Media Molecule.
No showing from Ninja Theory.

Was excited for some of the games and it had some really high highs, but waiting for all that shit above and getting none of it was a really shitty feeling.

wait was little big planet 3 a joke?

Both MS and Sony had about 90 minutes of games, where Sony had the extra 20 of boredom which felt like an eternity. Judging from a games standpoint though, I'd say Sony edged ahead of MS ever so slightly.
I honestly think Insomniac Games had the best day today. Sunset Overdrive looks like a total blast, and a Ps4 Ratchet and Clank plus the movie, I'd say Ted Price and his studio should be pretty damned excited.

When they showed that picture of the camera I was expecting them to announce it would come bundled with the PS4 from now on. Oh well.

Yeah, I thought they were about to seriously troll Microsoft at that point. That was the first point during the conference I actually had a half-smile. But instead, they went to talk about Morpheus briefly, instead. Half-smile gone.

This is what I felt overall. Microsoft was being humble and Sony being cocky again.

Oh please. It was a few light hearted jabs while some of you make it sound like Sony took a shit on stage at MS conference. As for comparison between MS and Sony's conference, despite the slog towards the middle, Sony just had a greater diversity of games and games that actually show off the power of the PS4. It gets the nod over MS from me.

But it does.
It's hard to get genuinely surprised when your stuff's been leaked weeks before.
MS shouldn't have announced Horizon 2 beforehand. MGSV trailer leak just before the E3 showing was unfortunate. Bloodborne leak was just plain tragic.

Yeah, Bloodborne would have been a showstopper with no leaks.

Rundown of both pressers, should be accurate. Bolded are "new" announcements (some were leaked).
Magicka 2 - announcement trailer, exclusive
Grim Fandango remaster - announcement, exclusive

Grim Fandango is coming to "other platforms" and Magicka 2 is confirmed to be coming to PC.

What i really liked...

1. unannounced beta/alpha launching during e3. Already gotten into BFh
2. No man Sky - GOTS
3. GTAV coming to to PS4. Day one.
4. Far cry 4 tech that lets you play coop without having the game on PS4. Just insane...
5. Vita TV coming to NA... about time.
6. I forget the name but its like journey but underwater. Look so cool.

What i hated:

Same as everyone else. The PSN guy and movie/tv junk. Why are they wastin my PS+ money on stupid tv shows.... YUCK! This alone wreck the conference. Went from a 9/10 to a 7/10. Guess it could be worse, at least it not wonder book.

E3 day one verdict: I only have a PS4 at this point and i really see no reason to get anything else in the near future. MS really had the most to prove and the best they did was CGI trailers of game that are years off. I love MS pacing of their show but they just didnt have the games they needed. MS just didnt have any megaton. Leaks of huge megaton that didnt happen really hurt them IMO.

Sony wins E3 IMO. I really see nothing that will change the PS4 out selling everything.

I would assume that they are using PS NOW tech to stream it. And to people thinking that it is a bad idea because others can play the game for free, its just as likely to expose more people to it and lead them to buy it too. You see a friend playing it, jump in with him and then go "hot damn this is really good" and I bet when you exit, it will ask you if you wanna buy it.

From what I captured, thats basically what we will have for both platforms, exclusively speaking.

I enjoyed MS conference a lot more tbh, and I believe MS have the strongest line-up by now. But Uncharted 4, The Order and Bloodborne looks amazing!!

Fair enough, i stand corrected. Still, i do think its a bit of hyperbole that Sony had THAT much more over MS. But fair enough, Uncharted wasn't CGI.

MS and Sony both had a similar conference qualitywise. But i´m no fan of Halo, so MS has no game for me. SO and Crackdown are too similar to DR 3 in my book. Dude/s running around and breaking stuff. Thats not my type of game sadly.

Thats why Sony had more wowing moments imo. I hope gamescom and TGS have something to offer that differs of the imo boring dudebro stuff usually showing up at E3, especially i´m hoping that MS shows something fresh and new to differentiate their XONE lineup. So far the games seem to similar or are simply remastered games, which is a nice fanservice, but only if you liked the original.

Ah well 6:10 am already... time to sleep ;)

It's pretty easy actually. Just delete anything with Shawn Layden and Powers, and there you go, conference instantly made 10 times better.

Too true. Not sure why they had to dedicate such a long time to Layden's speech. They didn't even have to replace his part with anything else. Just trim it away and make it a little shorter.

it sorta saddens me that so few on GAF seem to know who Brian Michael Bendis is

he was the primary architect of the Ultimate Marvel universe which is largely what the movies have drawn from

I know who he is. Just read Powers series through for the second time. ;) I've read some of the Ultimate Marvel comics as well, but I like the regular ones more.

Yeah. Looks like they came up a fair bit short of that claim last E3.

Well, The Order should be in the list because it was penned for 2014. And I excluded around 5 low-tier ports like Flower. fl0w, Sound Shapes, etc. So technically they already hit 20 if you give them a handicap. ( but they shouldn't )

And technically, it's still feasible for there to be more titles for the rest of the year (Gamescom), though obviously no more 'AAA' announcements to be expected.

I just cannot get over the people in this thread saying Sony somehow TROUNCED MS or vice versa. I mean, did we watch the same fucking conferences. Sony's conference was boring as fuck, and MS's conference was full of CG with nothing to show. Both announced about the same number of games. I'd understand if certain people tilt a certain way due to certain games appealing to them, but anybody rating MS a 9 and Sony a 6 or rating Sony an A and MS a D is clearly devoid of any shred of objectivity. It's so painfully obvious who are fanboys in this thread. Both conferences were roughly equally dissapointing.

You understand that people will tilt a certain way due to their game preferences, but you don't understand why they would therefore score differently?

I mean I would score them both the same, but I don't expect the same of some hardcore Halo/Uncharted fan.

BTW, LBP3 was the most enjoyable part of E3 for me so far, and I'm sad about all the hate it's getting.

Oh wow I forgot to do my Day 0 Report card:
Disclaimer: If anything was leaked, said it wasn't going to be at E3 or teased about, I didn't let it affect my score... this is the score of their conferences and the material in it.
All conference grades have stood in place -- Details in each thread

Sony :B+
MS : B
UBI: B-
EA: F( As I've said the only way this could be any worse if somebody sung Kumbaya as they lay out on the conference floor) They made me dislike the only few games that came from them and cockteased us with the stupidest shit.

Sans EA, solid showings all around. Sony was pretty much on par MS, but if you look past the bloat, Sony had much more to offer.

With all these solid showings, Nintendo's oddball approach will be fun to see if it hits a homer or makes E3 fall out with a whimper.

No Vita stuff... I guess Vita is no longer means LIFE

Well, in its defense, it was at least mentioned and shown, unlike The Last Guardian or the Agent. Granted, it was shown in a sizzle reel for f2p games and a showcase for PS Now and Remote Play, but it was still acknowledged. Hell it was acknowledged more than the PS3 this year so that's something, right?

It would have been cool if Sony did something akin to Nintendo Directs for the PS3 and Vita, wherein they discuss the new content and experiences coming to those respective systems especially if they are being left off the stage at E3. Borderlands 2 and Soul Sacrifice Delta just launched and there's some more content coming this summer and fall that could have been discussed...

This is my issue. I did not buy my PS4 to play indie games. I know I may be in the minority, but indies to me are not system sellers for the most part.

Well that's kinda the point...they already sold the system to you. They don't need to again. And what most people don't realize that if all of the indie games suddenly disappeared into a vacume...guess what? You would still have the same number of AAA games coming out. The indie games are just icing on the cake. The industry is headed in the direction of core tentpole AAA franchises coming out every year, and an assortment of mid tier, smaller, and indie titles, filling in the gaps. Development is too expensive for every game to be AAA. I don't get this blowback at all. They are providing you curated access to games of all shapes and sizes that otherwise (if you didn't own a pc) you would not have access too. I don't get what the damn problem is. They are games. If you don't want them, don't buy them. But do realize they will only proliferate and grow in scope (see no man's sky arguably the best game of the sony presser and of E3 in general) and become the norm. AAA games are becoming the exception.

And the trailers, including Uncharted 4, were mere seconds long and didn't really show much.

It's like they're stringing us along. It hurts.

yeah the trailers that are barely long enough to constitute a trailer piss me off. in my opinion Sony played it very safe and came off boring. i mean all Sony is offering in 2014 as AAA exclusives are Drive Club and TLoU Remastered, not too exciting. i enjoy that they focused on indie games and such but it was very underwhelming. far off release dates and teaser trailers with little context do not get me hyped.

I agree with you. I think MS wins for me because the 2014 lineup appeals to me more. But both companies played to their fanbase. MS just had a better pace for the most part as well. Cool/expected stuff.
It's true in the case of Microsoft (not a single game was shown that a non-Xbox fan would have any innate interest in, nostalgia wise, except for the new Platinum game).

Sony, on the other hand, showed off what appears to be a true Dark Souls successor (appeals to multiple platforms) as an exclusive, Grim Fandango reboot (appeals to '90s PC crowd), Magicka 2 (PC crowd), Let It Die (Suda51 fans, if they still exist, follow the games regardless of console), and so forth.

Sony simply has more in the wings. There's a reason why it is outselling Xbox One. People know that its gotz the games.

Solid show. 8/10. I just wish they had more games coming out this year. LBP3 is not my cup of tea and I'll get Forza Horizon 2 over Drive Club. TLOU was one of my favorite games ever but I don't think I need to play it again so soon (will still buy at some point). On the plus side, really like the indie games from PS and they have a very strong lineup for next year. Also, will likely get the majority of the third-party stuff on PS4 which is a turnaround from last gen.

Totally. I really thought that was where they were going.

That was a good show. I mean yes, like always we hyped ourselves up way too much, but they showed a ton of games and there is a lot to look forward to. Destiny, LBP3, Bloodborne, The Order, No Man's Sky, Grim Fandango, TLOU, Abzu, GTAV, Arkham Knight, MGSV, MKX and of course Uncharted 4 (and plenty more I'm not mentioning).

My god if UC4 looks that amazing throughout O_o (which I have no reason to doubt given ND track record).

And more thing…I'm not very happy with five beeps Tron guy though :/
