When you need a stoppage time goal to win against Iran, you're not winning any World Cups and Iran was robbed of a penalty in that game too.

I think any team would struggle against 11 men behind the ball. Group stages performances usually mean jackshit, I remember Argentina looking like world beaters in 2006 in the group stages, yet struggled against Mexico with an extra time goal, and then bowed out against a much inferior Germany team on penalties.

I've seen teams struggle during group stage and then turn it on during the knockout stage, France 2006 being the most recent example of this.

There isn't a clear favorite, feels like the most open World Cup of the last 20 years IMO.

nah B is where the real drama is:

Those Spanish flag colors.

So, like, um, is collusion like, a real thing in these kind of situations Germany and the USA find themselves in? I've heard that game's betting line is the most likely to draw than any other match. Vegas thinks they collude, so it must be a thing, right?

I mean it could happen as it would be beneficial in as far as rest goes they can play a lighter paced game but I think both sides are more likely to just play thier hearts out. Who knows if it ends up close towards the end anything could happen.

I'm nervous for Costa Rica in that I want them to finish first in the group and play against either Ivory Coast (I like the sound of the battle of the coasts), Japan or Greece instead of Colombia.

England might surprise and I think Pinto is going to make changes to rest the players. I hope the guys are still in the same mind set.

Catholicism.

Catholics being not entirely popular in the US historically.

It mostly has to do with potatoes.

7 times the population of Ireland is a pretty big exodus, famine or not. Realistically, at this point most Americans could claim any number of heritages as their primary heritage. That 35 million would choose Irish seems like a pretty clear indication of cultural reasons to choose Irish as a primary heritage, one of the big ones probably being St.Patricks Day and what is now a overall positive view of the Irish.

But yeah, soccer. USA USA USA

Well the famine was in the mid 1800's, where around 1.5 million Irish fled to a country of a population about 20-25 million. 35 million isn't an unreasonable number extrapolated from that point.

if Paulo Bento still manages, I won't give a fuck about Euro 2016

It is sad to say but Carlos Queiroz's squad in 2010 only concede 1 lone goal during that World Cup
to Spain's David Villa

I want Iran to advance now just to see the headlines in Portuguese media.. Queiroz advances, Bento goes home..

Will wait for Jose Mourinho

Just got back from a bar that I watched the US game at. What a game and what heartbreak at the end. At least we didn't lose, but it does feel like it sometimes. Everybody was going absolutely nuts for those two goals though. It was just fantastic. This team has done better than I thought they would for sure, and no matter what happens on Thursday, we've put forth a great effort this World Cup.

Eh, you're underestimating our ability to breed. My mother's father was one of fifteen children of Irish immigrants. They got here and were like FOOD? OMG FOOD GIVES ME OVARY BONERS

sorry I meant SOCCER SOCCER FOOTBALL OCHOAAAAAAAAA

I honestly prefer that we don't even get to the next phase and come back sooner. If we face a team like Netherlands or France... I don't even want to watch. Everything bad that could happen, happened in this World Cup. I doubt our situation can get any better than this.

Yeah. I joked around about the chance of Queiroz going further. It would be so hilarious after everything that he went through when he was leading our National team.

I don't know if Mourinho could do a good job with the players we have right now. Would love to see how it would go, though.

While there's a lull in this thread, anyone mind giving me a quick rundown on how to get into European soccer? I think Premier League is shown on cable...and that's about it. I never cared much for watching soccer (lol MLS) aside from the WC, and Europe has always seemed too confusing with your 91455314 leagues.

Depends on where you live, sounds like you are in the US too. I bought more cable channels, so I can see games from over leagues on GOL TV, like Bundesliga and sometimes La Liga. As for Serie A, I have nothing for you. Champions League games are on FOX. For streaming, I have little information for you too. Sorry mate. In 2016, Bundesliga will be on FOX with Premier League if that helps? I follow Bundesliga only, lol.

I just meant even more broadly, like how the seasons are set up, when they start, how the post-season works, etc.. Thanks for the info though

Just watch the champions league. It's the only tournament with remotely even levels of competition.

beIn Sports for Spanish/Italian/German league, NBC channels for the English league, and FOX sports channels for the Champions League.
English league is overall the most exciting, Spanish has the same 3 top teams
every year, but I dont follow German/Italian all that much

Oh, so you want to know about how the seasons work, or? I know a lot, or I like to think I do, about 'soccer'. (I am German, been playing and following my whole life.) Like, just PM me literally any questions and I will answer them for you, mate.

They all start and finish at almost the same time. theres no post season - only being #1, although each league has cups (or tournaments) also along with the regular season, along with the Champions League where only the top teams in Europe compete
