Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I was looking into audio options for the new TV I'll be buying soon, and I noticed that the Sony KDL50W829B has a free Soundbar option.

Is it worth spending the £150 extra over the Sony KDLW656 ?

Where can I find out how these Sony TVs rate in terms of their games performance?

Great, I think I'm going to go for the 50W829 instead! The improvements sound worthwhile, and I think the soundbar will make a big difference.

Couple of questions regarding Sony TVs from 2013/2014:

- Is it possible to disable to the screen, but still process audio?
I'd like to run spotify and other music through the TV and the Soundbar.

- The last Sony TV I had was from 2000 or so. Is it still possible to assign the number channel buttons on the remote control to different inputs instead? I always found this really useful, rather than cycling through inputs.

IIRC, you can turn off the display in Power Saving settings.
 
GAF any thoughts on the Samsung UN75F7100. I am looking for a big screen and my best buy is selling the floor model for 2500....

My TV has this, it's got a button in the remote for picture off.

Ya the 800B is the 2014 version. From many reviews, it sounds greatly improved over its 2013 counterpart. Better blacks, screen uniformity, etc. I saw one at Best Buy yesterday and likely pulling the trigger on a purchase soon.

Yeah, this is how plasma conversations usually go. Again, I spent 15 seconds googling the topic yesterday and found multiple recent threads with people talking about long term burn in on their plasmas from just watching a certain channel too much, or playing a certain game too much.

The bottom line is that people have to baby sit their plasmas if they truly want to be sure they won't get burn in. If you're a gamer who likes to play certain games a lot, or watches a lot of ESPN, or any other tv channel with a logo on screen, all of them are threats for burn in, so please stop telling people lies about how modern plasmas can't suffer this problem anymore. Just went over a friend's house who has a higher end Sharp Aquos. The colors were terrible; washed out and gross. The viewing angles were atrocious.

I will take a better picture and being a bit careful over that any day.

Well he owns a Sharp Aquos, those TVs are known for being shit. He probably didn't even do any changes to the settings either and the colors will be disgusting on default settings.

If he owned a higher end Samsung or Sony LCD which was properly calibrated you wouldn't be quite as unimpressed.
 
I feel like I want to be in the market for a new tv but don't really need one..Just want a giant tv...Currently have a 46 inch from 09..

What's the best tv available (using for gaming, computer monitor, and tv watching) with Amazon prime right now?

My budget with warranty would be roughly 2200 max..
 
Can anyone recommend a TV that's able to pass 5.1 through via an optical out? 1080p, 40" and I don't care much about other features (including speakers). I don't want it to be too expensive either - really no more than about £350.

It's very well reviewed. It has the same TRILUMINOS display as the 2013 high-end W900A and the input lag ratings are very good at only 18ms. Since it is edge-lit and such a large display, there is some slight vignetting around the edges and probably some light banding and DSE but these flaws are inescapable with large edge-lit LED sets.

If my TV were to die tonight this is probably the model I would buy right now.

For what purpose? Most only output 2.0 audio.
 
Ooh, nice. I saw one in person last night as my cousin bought it for his parents but i thought I'd ask about it as well. We had to turn on the game setting to get the input lag low, which is fine. lol

I guess I'm buying it at Frys this afternoon, assuming they still have it on sale. :P

In all likelihood it'll be passing to a sound bar (this is for a second room, not the main TV). It'll have the PS3 and an Apple TV hooked up (Vita TV later in the year possible) and be used for games and Blu-Rays/Netflix.

I appreciate it's far from ideal, but trying to get the best I can with what I have to work with.

If you can't find one, best thing to do is get an AV receiver with an optical out for this purpose. Some have them.

I have a receiver in the main room, this is a minimal setup for a second room so I don't really want an amp/receiver in there. If 2.0 is the best I can get I guess I can see what a sound bar would do with that audio.
 
So, that Sony XBR65X950B... wow is that a beautiful set, and that's coming from a Plasma guy. Full array lighting or not though, $8000 is a lot. Interested in how the Panasonic 900U's end up. Which, interestingly enough, come with Display Port tech. The 800U comes close to matching their ZT, the 900U must be fantastic.

Yeah its amazing. blu ray looks beyond stunning on it. Might be the best LCD Set ive ever seen.

This has zero influence on the actual quality of the display, but as a technicality this years "TRILUMINOS" has nothing to do with last years other than being a catchy marketing term. Last year Sony used QLED "quantum dots" as a layer over the backlight. I remember reading a number of articles around CES saying that tech was dropped for this year.

The sets may have great colour still, but its not the same tech as the X/W900A's.

Ended up going with the Sony 65w850a for $1500 as well. Dont have a Frys near me but Sony.com was able to price match and I get it shipped to my house. Seems like a good price for that set. Was going to get the Samsung 60 PNF8500 plasma but couldn't justify the extra cash right now. Shame I'm missing out on one of the last great Plasmas but at least I'm getting a slightly bigger screen and something better for gaming. By the next time I'm ready to upgrade I'm sure OLEDs will finally be viable so I'll spring for the best then.

Yes they dropped the quantum dots but the new display is still better at producing colours as several reviews of the TV says. I was lucky to get to compare last years modell a with the new b from the same source material next to eachother and that made me spend the extra $ for the new modell and glad I did. This TV is amazing and would recommend it to everyone that look for tv:s in that pricerange.

Edit: Oops my bad thought you were taking about the new X900b modell (4k). Cant say anything about the displays on the W modells I am afraid :(

Yeah, it may be the opposite for the W line. From the research I've done all indications are that the "A" or 2013 models are the ones to get over the new B.
 
Is it possible to turn the backlight completely off on the W9?

Couldn't sleep last night so I stuck the Freeview radio channels on but the splash screen came on a minute later and lit the room up.

It's on sale for 1500 at Frys and instore and I was gonna go buy it in a few hours for my parents. I wanted to use it for gaming on occasion too.

I got this last week. It's amazing. I skipped on the w900a last year and I regret it. After checking all the TV's I ended up taking this one. Don't regret it one bit :)

Now I'm just waiting on my sexy white ps4. Can't wait to get that and start playing it on this sexy best ;) lmao.
 
This might be a silly question but are there any modern LED TVs that support legacy inputs like s-video, VGA, RF, composite? I've been using my 5 year old Vizio 32" LCD in my office for retro and modern gaming, but I'm wondering if I should upgrade. My existing set has all the inputs mentioned above, works great with retro consoles over RGB, and doesn't have any perceptible input lag. Wondering if I should just stick with what I have even though the black levels are a sorely lacking.
 
Is 3D still a worthless feature ? I sit about 10ft away and looking at getting 65" soon. Of course I don't want to break the bank. Smart TV is pointless for me but is there 3D TVs without network connectivity?

Pacific Rim 3D on a VT60 is as good as IMAX. Plus, I can eat bacon at the same time, so it basically beats it.
 
Is Sony 850 (2014 model) worth it if you have Panasonic Plasma? Specifically, the VT30 model.

Kinda thinking about it.
