Okay, we're halfway through the year, what are the media frontunners for GOTY?

Probably Destiny as the front runner. I can see Shovel Knight being a darkhorse pick by some outlet that wants to rock the boat.

I think DKCTF may just be the best 2D platformer ever created, which I consider interesting, but the press won't mention it during GOTY stuff :(

If it's the former:
There's an outside chance that Titanfall, if managed correctly, or Watch_Dogs could be competitive. There's an extremely small chance Tomodachi Collection or Mario Kart 8 could. Transistor might get a vote. Dark Souls II has a very very very very small chance. Beyond that, I don't think anything out this year is likely to show up in GOTY awards. Slim pickings so far.

If it's the latter:
Battlefield, AC5, Dragon Age 3, and Far Cry 4, Smash Bros. The Witness will be competitive if it gets out in time. Destiny is going to be in the conversation. Captain Toad might be a dark horse if it's executed really well, but it won't have mainstream traction. Evolve apparently got good notice at E3 so who knows.

Some other indie possibilities, pending releasing in 2014: Hohokum, The Stomping Land, Banished, That Dragon Cancer, Gods Will Be Watching, Hotline Miami 2, Below, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Hyper Light Drifter, Inside

Wait, Below, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, and Hyper Light Drifter are releasing this year? Apparently I haven't been paying enough attention. I'm starting to wonder if The Witness will make it out this year. I don't know.

And why do you think Dark Souls 2 has such a small chance? Because of its difficulty and it releasing earlier in the year? I can't see Titanfall winning. That game has long since been forgotten. Same with Infamous. Watch_Dogs may have some chance, but I don't know. Seems sort of mixed on that game. Mario Kart 8, while I'm sure is great (haven't played it yet), is still Mario Kart... on the Wii U, the worst selling Nintendo system of all time. And we know how the media is with Nintendo games, a few exceptions like Mario Galaxy notwithstanding. Same thing with Smash Bros. It will probably be great, but it's still Smash Bros... on the Wii U.

Honestly, I think Destiny, Sunset Overdrive, Far Cry 4, and maybe Assassin's Creed Unity and maybe Dragon Age (if it's really good) are going to be the biggest contenders this year.

No, I wasn't saying they were releasing this year, I'm saying if they were releasing this year, they'd probably be in the conversation.

Reception so far seems to have been "Still quite good but not as good as the last one", which makes it a pretty heavy burden to show up in an end of year discussion, especially since it was also an early-year release and as a matter of sales it's smaller than most of the other contenders. I just don't see where the base of support comes from.

It's honestly a hard call, especially with how INSANE this fall is looking. A lot of games that could be really cool or complete crap. Destiny or Evolve after getting a lot of E3 attention seem the safest bets for now, Destiny in particular is launching in a somewhat quietr time which may help it for more critics to get their hands on it. Far Cry 4 may make some noise too, I recall 3 getting snubbed by its December release date before.

3 still got a lot of GOTY awards, though, since it was about the only AAA game from 2012 that lived up to expectations. Evsn so, TWD was the more popular choice, and I don't think anyone was expecting that at the start of the year. So, there could still be a dark-horse GOTY for 2014.
 
Far Cry 4 could win it on Giant Bomb. FC3 won in 2012, I believe. Destiny will probably scoop up most of the awards, however.

Just kidding the VGX nominees I'm guessing will be Destiny, Sunset Overdrive, Smash Brothers, Evolve, and an indie game like Transistor.
 
We are choosing who will be the overwhelming GOTY winner? It's between destiny and dragon age. The two ubisoft games have a shot only if they go way beyond what has come before.

Basically if destiny lives up to the hype it has it in the bag. But I feel it won't, I think DA3 will win most. It's the first true bioware RPG in a long time. The story will more than likely be amazing. The gameplay will be sublime. It will have all ingredients for a GOTY winner.

None of the other games mentioned stand a chance of winning the most GOTY awards.
 
Probably between Destiny, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2 and SSBU if the latter is released in time to be nominated. I can see Bayonetta 2 surprising a few people too.
 
Dark Souls 2 almost has no chance, due to the expectations generated from its predecessor. Which is a shame, because it's still certainly better than most games in 2014.
 
Destiny will be a contender for sure, I'm hoping Sunset Overdrive turns out to be real special as well. Game is essentially designed for me, from the soundtrack and graphics down to the classic platforming and crazy weapons.
 
I would not be shocked to see Divinity: Original Sin on lists from PC focused sites if the rest of the game is the same quality as the beta.
 
Nothing I played so far this year wowed me like some of the last GOTY's had.
Honesty I don't think anything will really wow me in the Fall either. Evolve looks great but I'll need to see more before considering a GOTY I feel like the map quantity and quality will be it's downfall, DAI has a strong chance of being great but I still feel Bioware is gonna fuck it up with the writing, and ACU will suffer strongly from Factory Ubisoft. So while I'll have to choose one eventually I'm honestly not sure what I'd pick this year yet.

I'm a huge LotR fan. I watched the entire trilogy + An Unexpected Journey all on the same day in preparation of seeing The Desolation of Smaug the day after. I also read all the books...

But it seems like each new game that comes out feels less like LotR than the last (Not counting the Lego games). Shadows of Mordor might as well be an original IP.
 
Destiny seems like the AAA game that's getting the most hype. Walking Dead Season 2 is a dark horse I'd say, considering Season 1 made a huge splash but it doesn't seem like the second season is causing as big a wave in the media sphere. Evolve seems like another contender considering the press it got at E3. Beyond that you have the regular Call of Duty/Battlefield/Assasin's Creed stuff that comes out every year that will probably pick up awards here and there.

I think the biggest sleeper is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. It's kind of snuck it's way into the fall line-up with little fanfare, and if it's a solid game with enough new tweaks to the Borderlands formula, it could end up being a big surprise. Especially if Destiny's launch is marred in any way and it doesn't do as well as everyone is expecting.
 
Dark horses that will probably get a few awards if they pan out include shadow of Mordor and da:I in my book.

Destiny will win the majority though.
