Captain Toad
Toad's first game, those glorious little diorama levels, interesting level design / puzzles, unconventional bosses, etc.. plus it's pretty much the only interesting game on Wii U this year makes it a lock to appear on GOTY lists.
Probably Destiny as the front runner. I can see Shovel Knight being a darkhorse pick by some outlet that wants to rock the boat.
Wait, is the thread about what the frontrunners are so far, or is the thread about guessing which H2-2014 games will be good enough?
If it's the former:
There's an outside chance that Titanfall, if managed correctly, or Watch_Dogs could be competitive. There's an extremely small chance Tomodachi Collection or Mario Kart 8 could. Transistor might get a vote. Dark Souls II has a very very very very small chance. Beyond that, I don't think anything out this year is likely to show up in GOTY awards. Slim pickings so far.
If it's the latter:
Battlefield, AC5, Dragon Age 3, and Far Cry 4, Smash Bros. The Witness will be competitive if it gets out in time. Destiny is going to be in the conversation. Captain Toad might be a dark horse if it's executed really well, but it won't have mainstream traction. Evolve apparently got good notice at E3 so who knows.
Some other indie possibilities, pending releasing in 2014: Hohokum, The Stomping Land, Banished, That Dragon Cancer, Gods Will Be Watching, Hotline Miami 2, Below, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Hyper Light Drifter, Inside
Wait, Below, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, and Hyper Light Drifter are releasing this year? Apparently I haven't been paying enough attention. I'm starting to wonder if The Witness will make it out this year. I don't know.
And why do you think Dark Souls 2 has such a small chance? Because of its difficulty and it releasing earlier in the year?
Last of Us came out in June, Journey in March, Mass Effect 2 in January, Red Dead Redemption in May, Portal 2 in April.
Contrary to popular belief, there is not much correlation between GOTY winners and the time of the year they're released.
That's true. Though this year it doesn't seem like a game has made a similar splash yet.
It's honestly a hard call, especially with how INSANE this fall is looking. A lot of games that could be really cool or complete crap. Destiny or Evolve after getting a lot of E3 attention seem the safest bets for now, Destiny in particular is launching in a somewhat quietr time which may help it for more critics to get their hands on it. Far Cry 4 may make some noise too, I recall 3 getting snubbed by its December release date before.
We are choosing who will be the overwhelming GOTY winner? It's between destiny and dragon age. The two ubisoft games have a shot only if they go way beyond what has come before.
The thread is discussing what the Media's GOTY will be.
WOLFENSTEIN
Where the hell are the Xenoblade X gifs? D:
Xenoblade X is 2015.
doesnt even have a chance... its not 1080p 60 fps
I'm a huge LotR fan. I watched the entire trilogy + An Unexpected Journey all on the same day in preparation of seeing The Desolation of Smaug the day after. I also read all the books...I'm holding out hope that Shadow of Mordor will be a dark horse contender.
