Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Platinum games in a nutshell.
Indeed. Platinum games are mostly good, but also extremely overhyped by their fans.

Anyway, controversial opinion of the day: Smash Bros. games should never be developed with competitive play in mind. Let it be a silly party game it is (or was) supposed to be. If you want a competitive game, go play Street Fighter or something else.

Also, people (still) hating on Dark Souls II are just trying to be the "cool people who liked the first games better". In fact, this mindset that every third game in a series is bad is tiring.
Smash Bros Brawl is not only the best Smash but the greatest fighting game of all time (except perhaps Tekken 3 and the first Soul Caliber)
I agree about Brawl being the best game in the series (albeit not my favorite, I still like the original game the most).

Demon's Souls has better combat than Dark Souls for the simple fact that everything you do is about 20% faster. The fact that they've slowed the combat more with each iteration makes me like them less.

The Director's Cut of Deadly Premonition butchered the original game, both on PS3 and PC.

The idea of older Resident Evil games being light on ammo is revisionist history. You were always pretty healthily stocked even if you killed most enemies.

I don't like Western RPGs at all. They all have terrible combat. Dark Souls was ok, but even that got dull. To me it seems like the focus is exploration and freedom, but the actual moment to moment gameplay is pretty awful

But dark souls isn't a western RPG, so why use it as an example to explain why you don't like western RPGs? And terrible combat? Please.

No, what you said is factually wrong.
Alright, that's your opinion lol

If you don't like something in PW or 4 - no offense- grow some balls and say it, don't try to hide behind made up stories like the guys in FF threads do.

C'mon man! I really enjoyed playing PW, I really do! I played it over hundreds of hours (both in PSP and PS3).. but storywise, let's be honest.. it was not as good as the previous games.

Turn based RPGs are archaic in design. i feel like people like them because of nostalgia goggles.

Battles usually play out like this:

I hit you --->you hit me.

Or the variation!

I hit you---> you hit me HARD---> I gotta heal---> Repeat

I feel like this type of gameplay should of died out when text adventure gaming did. But then again, people still kickstart those as well. NOSTALGIA.

UNLESS you are an SRPG (Valkyria Chronicles, Fire Emblem...) where your positioning actually matters in combat and you arent face-tanking your enemy's hits, you should NOT be turn based. Watch and see, FFXV will be better for it.

OH OH also, the next persona (5) should go real time combat. Real time combat is the natural evolution from that filthy-turn-based-boring-style.

*Puts fingers in ears.*

Real time combat isn't an evolution of turn based. It's something completely different. Turn based combat is an abstraction in a game where the combat isn't the focus. It's a substitute for when you don't want to focus the game around a tight set of combat mechanics. You can't just translate any turn based system into real time. It doesn't work. You end up with the same "I hit you, you hit me" except now you have to pause and queue up actions or navigate menus in real time.

I'm pointing this out because I think I understand what you mean about turn based games not being so good. A lot of turn based RPGs have lazy and unintuitive combat that degenerates into grinding and wailing on enemies. But equally lazy real time games have the same gameplay, like FFXII. Moving from abstracted combat to technical combat isn't a matter of changing turn based into real time. It takes actual design. And that's not the focus of every game. It's easier to have more skills and techniques in an RPG when you don't have to develop in-depth mechanics for each of them.

*shrugs* I don't even play FPSes, but your question could literally apply to any popular genre...

...The only thing I really, really find boring? This recent obsession people have with "new and unique gaming experiences". No offense (honest), it just sounds...corny. Like, I want new shit too, but when I see people talk about "there really hasn't been any unique changes in gaming since Mario 64" or whatever? I can't deal. At a certain point, it becomes about incremental changes rather than groundbreaking ones...

No offense taken, but I will leave you with 2 questions:

1. Can you think of a genre more saturated than shooters? Fighting games don't even come close to matching it.

2. Why is it that Japanese games have become increasingly popular in the west? There seem to be more Japanese games being ported/translated today than ever before.

God I hate GAF.

On topic: Dark Souls II is as good as Dark Souls and everyone crying about how it's bad are big babies with no actual point to make other than 'B-BUT B TEAM!!'

I've heard plenty of valid points made. Including but not limited to wonky hit detection, unimaginative bosses, nonsensical story, nerfing poise, and my biggest complaint: poor implementation of soul memory that renders unique builds obsolete in NG+ and beyond since there's no longer any incentive to stop leveling.

Didn't come here to dissuade you, though. Just thought you'd be interested in hearing this if you legitimately haven't seen any actual complaints.

Monster Hunter's loot system is one of the worst loot systems in any game. Instead of tying your loot to the difficulty of what you've done to achieve it, it ties it to a random number generator. This isn't much different from how MMOs work, but unlike MMOs, you aren't running around environments killing trash mobs for hours on end. Instead, you're fighting the same mob. Over and over. Sleepwalking through a fight that's about as fun as watching paint dry your 20th time through it just so that you can roll a die at the end of a fight for whatever drop you need.

The arena mode, on the other hand, gets loot right. Shame the whole game doesn't use that system. It'd be a lot less of a bore.
I'd hardly call a G-rank Dios a trash mob.

I have a question, why the hell isnt the world bored to death of shooters yet? How many of them do we really need? Dont get me wrong, ive enjoyed many of them over the years, but where is the real creativity that would provide us with new and unique gaming experiences? Think about all of the resources dedicated to shooters that COULD be working on something different.

For some reason FPSs are like crack to so many people and i just dont get it. Is that ALL you want from games? Well dont worry, your supply chain will seemingly never run dry. You can virtually shoot things over and over and over... [Zzzzz] until the end of time. Yay.

CoD 4 Life <3

I suggest you look forward to splatoon

I vastly prefer generic fantasy art over the Souls' "woe is me" grimdark brown and gray. If the game wasn't wallowing in its misery so much I would have enjoyed it much more than I did.

Journey is the perfect example of minimalism in video games applied poorly. Minimalism is a tool used to define focus and narrow in on what's important. Journey has no focus, no core to drive it, just a lot of signposts that we as gamers are trained to understand as conveying significance. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are far better at this task.

Old games are never inferior to new games, as a blanket rule. There's just different context involved. Anyone who dismisses old games out of hand must acknowledge their ignorance of that context.

Video games like Monster Hunter - where you set your own long-term goals by arranging the game's short-term goals to suit your own taste - are the future of the medium.

2. Why is it that Japanese games have become increasingly popular in the west? There seem to be more Japanese games being ported/translated today than ever before.

1. The sports genre. And the thing is, "saturation" isn't always saturation. Battlefield isn't CoD like Street Fighter isn't Guilty Gear. One game's mechanics and weapons may not appeal to me like another does.

2. Because fans of Japanese gaming are increasing in number. Shame most JP games are Moe trash, but still. Personally even I want to import Battride War as a Kamen Rider fan. Actually, there's another reason: copyrights are keeping some really decent games from coming Stateside.

People who only like single player games or play games for story ahead of gameplay are generally bad at video games.

Only genre that I like but I'm legit not good at is fighting games, but I prefer single player games and I place story on the same level as gameplay. :P. (Actually, arguably if someone created a long enough story mode I'd probably become good with fighters just from the practice, lol.)

Final Fantasy XII was garbage, had no redeeming quality for me.

Also, I didn't love, but I actually liked Tomb Raider AoD for the PS2, thought it was okay.

- Vita doesn't have many "Japanese games", it has mostly Virtual Waifu games. Some people mention its JPN library as if it's the second coming of PS2.
- WiiU is definitely not better than N64 at this point. It might not reach GCN numbers, I think it'll end up in Dreamcast, TG16, Saturn territory.
- E3 happened and PS4/XB1 libraries including upcoming stuff still look bland, limited and unappealing. Both systems are overpriced for what they offer.
- The best games released this year so far are Mario Kart 8, Kero Blaster and Shovel Knight.

Final Fantasy XIII is one of the best RPGs to come out in its generation.

The more I hear about Dragon's Dogma the more I wonder if I'm missing out on a real gem because I find the art design of the world to be one of the most boring things I've ever seen. Also, the fact that you're a mute create-a-character and don't have a party with real personalities detracts as well.

Dragon's Dogma has major shortcomings that are often glossed over. The world is large and completely unvaried and filled to the brim with nothing even remotely interesting to discover and explore. Within 1 hour of playing it you've faced 90% of the enemies you will ever encounter. Some of these issues are fixed by the Dark Arisen expansion pack but unfortunately none of those enemies propagate into the larger game world and you can't realistically play that content for a long time. The combat is fun, although it's not super awesome like a Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden. It's mindblowing compared to most action-rpgs, but imo most action rpgs have unforgivably terrible action and they completely blow the "action" genre they claim to meld rpg with. So compared to those, great combat in DD. You can climb enemies and attack them... but the camera is terrible and often times I can't even see my character when I'm climbing a dragon. On top of that, it feels like the controls get scrambled every time the camera moves. 60% of the difficulty in fighting large creatures is the camera. 35% is that eveything can one shot you. 5% is the enemy actually having challenging AI. There's also some graphical hitches but honestly those didn't bother me at all.

If you ignore all of that, DD is a gem. I enjoyed my time with it but mediocre sales and mediocre score is about where it should have ended up. It feels like a game where the team was working on it and got the core mechanics down packed and the world built. They were still working on the story, making quests, adding enemies, and creating interesting locaes when someone came in like, "whoa guys, I've been carrying a zero wrong all this time. We don't have 10 months left to finish. We have one" and the game shipped in a half finished state.

Because fans of Japanese gaming are increasing in number
Thats my point. I think the Japanese games can be very refreshing (sometimes), providing a very different experience. More people seem to be jumping on that bandwagon.

Also, i would argue that sports games dont quite fit into this conversation, only because of their direct relationship to real-life, ongoing events. The biggest reason you get annual sports games is due to real-life roster and stat changes.

I wish there was a sequel to it and Dark Souls 2 (that abomination of a game) NEVER came out. DkS2 was especially ruined by poor level design. FROM's 'B' team is more like a 'C' team...

There's having an opinion, then there's just being rude.

Yet all of this is true. Most if not all of the bosses are gutter trash. Many are re-hashes of old bosses and the rest are just "hmmm, this isn't hard enough yet....just add more enemies". Belfry Gargoyles and Ruin Sentinels are just really, really bad.

It's absolutely fucking ridiculous that the "new gen" still has to carry the old gen around like a ball 'n chain. Cross-gen is starting to become tedious.

"You can't afford a new console? Your own goddamn problem son..."

Hate every genre get too much praise for being "open world" "freedom" and "exploration".
Always prefer good old carefully calculated level design.

Also, I hate simplify combat aka batman/AC combat push attack button with randomize "awesome" animation.
It's just clever way to hide QTE in my opinion.

Expand on that a little? You mean visually the art looks boring, and therefore uninviting, or game looks boring to play, or the story looks boring?

All of the above really. I dont really know much about the story, so I cant comment on that...

But every time I watch it or try and get interested it just looks sort of bland.

Mirrors Edge wasn't very good and they shouldn't be doing a sequel.
Maybe more shootbang in the sequel will make it better though.

I hate the turn based mechanic with a passion. It's archaic and unneeded. It's pretty much the only criteria that has ever automatically turned me off from a game.At this point, there's no reason whatsoever it should be used.

DMC4 was great. DmC was great. Bought the DMC 1-3 bundle and couldn't get into a single one of the titles.

Assassins Creed is the best franchise out right now. I love everything about it...can't wait for Unity.

PS4 thumbsticks are defective. I can't believe that some people are still in denial over this issue.

I wouldn't say I was in denial, as it's obvious other people have had problems with faulty batches, but both of my launch-day PS4 controllers are working just fine with no signs of damage to either thumbstick, despite fairly constant use.

It just isn't happening to everyone.

hmmm so this is a safe environment...? well, here we go:

Gaming doesn't need more female or non white males as main characters, would it be nice? sure, but we don't need it. Why you ask? cause it contributes little to nothing to the game. Tomb Raider 2013 didn't gain or lose anything by having a female role, Second Son wasn't a better game cause Delsion was Native American. These are virtual characters, you play as them and then you move on. I thought Remember Me was an extremely boring game, would I have enjoyed it more if I got to play as a man? nope, still would've been boring. I think people need to stop worrying about the skin color of a made up character and what they have or don't have between their legs are start asking for better written characters. Link for example, why do you wan't Link to become a girl? its like saying why won't Nintendo make Mario a girl. That just doesn't make any sense to me. Why not just want a game where you just play as Zelda instead? Also before someone says its not an issue to me because I'm a white man let me just state I'm Hispanic and I can't even think of 1 Hispanic protagonist that I've played as(if I ever did) and that doesn't bother me whatsoever.

there, I said it. this is just my opinion of course but its how I honestly feel and I know I'm in the minority on this issue.

I can think of several games based on exploration with carefully calculated level design.

Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, La Mulana...

All of the above really. I dont really know much about the story, so I cant comment on that...

As much as I really love the game, it's in my top ten for sure, the first couple of hours are weak, not to say you should try it again though.

Batman's actually got excellent combat. Simple enough for you to finish the game if you're not great at games and just wanna be Batman, but if you want to do more impressive moves and and take out more difficult opponents so you're not risking getting your health being obliterated by superior numbers, then it takes more than just "SMASH X".

LMAO. I mean, you're in the minority either way guy. You're the minority with this thought process, and then you're in the minority of being represented in video games. XD

Banjo-Tooie (my favourite 3D platformer after SM64 and SMG1) is, though by a small margin, better than Banjo-Kazooie. Gameplay is expanded upon in a good way, music from Grant Kirkhope is as good as it was in BK, the bigger areas is something I prefer more than the smaller BK areas, and the interconnected levels (kinda like Dark Souls I'd guess) are very well done IMO. The only downside is that
Grunty doesn't rhyme any more
. :( Hope to see that happen before the end credits roll, but I don't think it'll happen. I've played Tooie when I was a kid, but I mostly forgot certain parts, level 8 in
the clouds
doesn't even feel familiar at all. Completely forgot about that one, but I'm enjoying it now.

But like I said, BK and BT are very, very close, but I prefer BT. Not sure how controversial that is, but I think a lot prefer BK. But they look, play and smell a lot alike, so I don't expect BK lovers to hate BT and vice versa. I'm still busy with Tooie, I'm going to do Challenge 9 when I'm home and then probably see the end credits before tomorrow. Then I'll hunt those remaining jiggies, Jinjo's and pages down. Might start a "LTTP: Banjo-Kazooie and RTTP: Banjo-Tooie" when I'm done.

The first one's all up to individual user experience, I guess, but it's an issue I never had. Won't say it doesn't exist, though. Stuff like 'unimaginative bosses' works for the rehashed fights (of which there's like 2?), but then you've got ones like The Pursuer and The Lost Sinner who provide some of the best challenge yet and give that real sense of accomplishment when you overcome them, putting them on par with other great bosses like Tower Knight from Demon's and Ornstein & Smough. Overall the bosses are on par with Dark Souls, so I think people are just trying too hard to find stuff to complain about.

I'll give them any complaints about bad online, though. But that still isn't enough to affect the main, single player experience, which I consider the most important part.

LMAO. I mean, you're in the minority either way guy. You're the minority with this thought process, and then you're in the minority of being represented in video games. XD
Is he really? Does the majority of people feel we need more females or non-whites? When reading the topics about this, I can't help but feel this is a vocal minority issue. I think most people don't care.

Mycontroversial opninion: The Last of Us is not the best PS3 game ever. Took me 2 weeks to finish because I couldn't play it for more than 2 hours straight for some reason.

If the gaming industry as a whole wants to expand their audience and increase profits then there's no other way than to represent a wider variety of playable characters. People like to play as themselves in an alternate world, that 's why Mii's are included in almost any big community game from Nintendo and why Sim games are top sellers, especially if you can customize your looks. In time this industry will be forced to adapt to the changes in society, it doesn't exist in a bubble.

Says who? I've never played as myself in any game, nor has anyone I've ever met. And The Sims aren't top sellers because people can play as themselves, they are top sellers because there is a huge casual audience that likes playing house.

EA is going to ruin the Sims 4 but people will buy it but still manage to bitch and EA won't care because they have your money.

I think this goes for every EA game as of late except Titanfall.
