This game is so good. HOLY MOLY. I just played it for 4 hours straight. Takes elements from Mario, Zelda, Megaman, and Castlevania and meshes them in the most perfect way.

This game is something special.
The game is so good that it kind of makes me wish 90 percent of other retro-styled indies didn't exist, just so this one would catch more people's attention, lol

Once you actually start playing it, Shovel Knight is in a class of its own.

I need to have a wallpaper made out of the ending.

You know what I'm talking about.

ENDING SPOILER YOU FOOL:
The final campfire scene with Shield Knight sleeping next to Shovel Knight

Why would you want even fewer people to be able to play the sequel?

Good Point. I'm just saying, given all the nods, it felt right playing it on a Nintendo system. Besides all the amazing humor, it felt 1st party Big N in quality. I know Nintendo has had issues with getting exclusive indie titles (esp. for WiiU) and since they almost have it here (with the exception of PC/Steam) it seems they'd be smart to try and acquire it.

But again, you're right - it'd be a g-damn shame for the sequel to have anything other than maximum exposure.

Which reminds me that I just played through Mutant Muds on PS Vita which I enjoyed way more compared to it's 3DS release. Dat OLED gets me every time...

I've only fought Black Knight (twice), Specter Knight, King Knight, Plague Knight, Treasure Knight and Mole Knight so far. Of those:

- Black Knight is the most satisfying all-around fight -- dodging his drop attack, and then pogoing off him in return!

- Specter Knight has the coolest projectile animation, throwing the whirling scythe. Reminds me of Trish's one move in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

- Plague Knight is probably my favorite, in terms of his concept (alchemy). I also liked his manner of movement, leaping everywhere like a crazy person.

- King Knight wasn't particularly notable, but I do like his look.

- Treasure Knight looked like the main character from BioShock 2, but it's not like those games invented diving suits. I really dig the vertical and horizontal hookshot he used.

- Mole Knight moved fast but was still a bit easy. Great variety of attacks, though.

All of the bosses have been stellar, really. Looking forward to the rest!

ALSO: Baz and Reize (map mini-bosses) were great. So was the boss of the Hall of Champions.

Wait, so from what I've read, did the Divekick people really have nothing to do with The Baz being in the game? And some random other guys put him in? That's so weird lol

Edit: Looked into it a bit more. I guess that's where he's from originally.

OK, I see where you're coming from with your statement. And I agree. As a gamer, I want this game on every platform imaginable. If I were Nintendo, though, I'd try to acquire Shovel Knight as an exclusive. The way the game's level design organically teaches you all of the mechanics is vintage Nintendo. And the humor gives the game a levity and warmth that reminds me of Paper Mario: TTYD.

I can't beat Specter Knight!! GAHHHH this game is just too hard for me sometimes.

pogo jumping is the best boss killer. get better at it
don't look at the scythe look at were he teleports to and the scythe trajectory becomes obvious
he is weakest when he throws his scythe but doesn't teleports. pogo jump as much as you can during that time

also pogo jumping has a weird hit/hurtbox. learn to abuse it

Pogoing multiple times off a boss before ever touching the ground is probably one of the most rewarding maneuvers in gaming. It makes me happy.

Baz was put into both Divekick and Shovel knight by Matt and Woolie from the Two Best friends/thesw1ther youtube channel. he was originally a scrapped concept character for street fighter.

So the game is not available in Australia (Or the PAL regions?)

Every time I see this thread bumped it flexes my hunger pains.

Pogo jumping twice with the silver armor and then hitting the enemy with the charged attack on the way done is orgasmic

Soooo... where's the extra stuff? I know some of it will come with free updates, but does that include the gender swap mode, the playable boss knights, etc?

Gender swap mode?

I'm guessing that'll be Shield Knight rescuing Shovel Knight?

Yea I'm debating whether or not to dive right back in for NG+ or maybe a no upgrade run, or just waiting for the other stuff first.

According to the press site, that's all DLC. Bosses, battle, gender swap... I think that's it?

I assumed gender swap just gave everyone new skins.

Aww man, how great would it have been if the final stretch goal had been met? If only the world had known back then how this game would turn out
Perhaps they could still add all of the boss characters to battle mode as paid DLC? My understanding is the stretch goals that were met will come as free updates. So maybe other additions beyond those could be paid.

Pretty sure it was. Taken from the press kit (release TBD):

Features to be released as free updates thanks to Kickstarter:
Battle mode featuring the Order of No Quarter
Challenge Mode
Gender Swap Mode
Three Playable Boss Campaigns: King Knight, Plague Knight, and Specter Knight

Oh the 300,000 goal was reached. It was the last goal reached, in fact.

EDIT: Ah, so they WILL come as free updates, cool.

Oh, thanks for posting that. I think I got mixed up by what they meant by playable bosses. It looks like three of the bosses will get full campaigns, and then all of the bosses will be playable in Battle Mode. Nice!

Wait, it WAS met? What was with that fan vote then to select the three playable boss knights?

EDIT: Badass. Can't wait to rek fools as spectre knight.

Yup! You can see on another page what the campaigns will be like/ what moves the bosses will have. Looks like King Knight will be comedy focused, while Specter and Plague Knight both have stories that explain their origins.

Shovel Knight hit every stretch goal. :)

Also, decided to double dip for the 3DS version. I've been playing my backer copy of the Wii U version and thought Yacht Club deserved more of my money.

It's two different things.

3 Boss Knights will be playable for the full campaign, these were voted by the fans.

All Boss Knights being playable is for the 4 Player Battle Co-op. (Which I believe the 3DS isn't getting because online only, sadly.)

That sounds PERFECT. Plague Knight is my favorite so far (I've beat five out of the eight bosses), so I'm especially curious to learn more about him.

Based on the description, it sounds like the 3 playable will have to get their own unique levels. I don't know how those unique attacking/movement options and story motivations would work into the standard game.

Unless they've said it was the normal campaign somewhere and I missed it?

Wait, shit... what? They aren't just going to be playable characters in Shovel Knight's campaign? They are getting their own separate stories?

That's so ace. Surely 100% of the levels will be recycled -- but still, very awesome. Yacht Club Games, man. They just get it

Both Gender Swap mode and the playable boss knights will get slight story changes to fit the situation.

I'm probably going to double-dip on 3DS, as well. I hear the 3D effect is strong. Also, the game has a lot to collect but not so much that it's overwhelming to do again. That's actually something worth mentioning about this game, in general -- you always have several things you can pursue at any given time, but it's never overwhelming. Everything is balanced just right. The risk-reward of retrieving your treasure... the pacing and checkpoints... the difficulty... the way the game teaches new concepts. Just a perfectly calibrated game.

Just read that. I guess the levels will stay mostly the same then, that should be interesting for Specter Knight!

Also, for people who were asking before, Gender Swap changes everyone. So Evil Enchanter, female Shovel Knight, Queen Knight, etc.

So who is best Knight?

MY vote goes to Propeller Knight. He is a knight and a captain of a mutherfucking airship
and he gets a harem end
Treasure Knight. Love the anchor harpoon arm cannon. Plus, who needs
a harem
when you have enough gold to carpet your floor?

At least, until the cops take it back. ;_;

Just finished this off, 6 hours gameplay. Combination of following along with the first ~500 posts of this thread, that Gamasutra article and the GB quicklook tipped me over the edge into "I need to play this now".

What a fantastic game. Enjoyed almost every damn second of it. Thanks, Yacht Club Games.
