Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Although there are thousands or replies to this thread. Just wanted to throw my two-cent in there about this game. HOLY FUCK.

I knew it was going to be good. I didn't Kickstart it but I have been following it since it was one of the only indie titles hitting the Wii U that seemed decent. I did however buy it on Steam in case people eventually modded it. But wow. I finished it last night whilst my girlfriend was away. Wow. Just wow.

I test games for a living currently. I get really bored of games easily and it has been a long time since a game has captivated me to play more. Persona 4 Golden being the last. But this game, I just couldn't stop playing. It reminded me so much of a much more simpler time in my life. Where I could play games all the time and not have to worry about anything.

It was a joy to play. I highly recommend it to anyone. In fact I have already convinced three people to purchase and play it. I commend the dudes at Yacht Club Games, you made a game that finally made me interested in playing them again. Thanks!

I don't think it makes it look worse, but bummer you guys don't like it!

I think these kinds of art styles totally can benefit from these effects.

For example, look at this comparison.

It's from an older version of the SweetFx thing I was doing, but it totally still applies. In the original, the green platform up top just has a weird color shift that when blown up like this doesn't really make any sense. But, with the CRT effect applied, you can see how it blends together and actually looks like a rounded edge, rather than just some weird color shift.

Similar stuff happens with Shovel Knights horns. You get the idea of what it's supposed to be, but it doesn't really look representative of it. With the CRT effect, theres a slight color shift to make it actually look like a little shine on the horn.

In the previously posted example that you guys were responding too, I think another great example are the yellow blocks you can shovel spike on to break.

shovel_brick__by_aloo81-d7p29c3.gif

It looks like a mish mash when it's regularly blown up, but using the CRT effect you get that great transitioning between the layers. Looking back at these I do actually need to lower the brigtness down a little because the colors are getting a bit shifted here, but I don't think it can be plainly said "It makes it worse."

Also just throwing this one in too, but I think it does wonders on the King Knight's throne! The arm rests little indented curves actually look like they make sense, and Shovel Knights horns are actually rounded out and smooth like they're supposed to be.

shovel_chair__by_aloo81-d7p2d08.gif

Basically, the CRT effect helps colors transition appropriately, and it helps round things which are made of squares actually look like round things, instead of mooshed together squares.

Whether you like it or not, I think there's some merit to the idea that it actually works with the art style in a similar way that older games used the CRT bleed to create nice looking blends. I dig it, you don't gotta, but I think there's some real genuine benefit to it.

Yeah, honestly, I'm glad for you that you like it and have the option to use that. I played Mega Man 4 on a CRT when I was... gosh, 7? 8? I have a fondness for that look too but I don't like it applied to Shovel Knight that way. I should mention I'm playing it on 3DS so a) the pixels are smaller and b) I get a pseudo CRT effect anyway just because of the quality of the 3DS screen. It appears that your filter just puts a subtle gray line around every pixel which isn't really an accurate CRT effect and makes the overall image a little muddier and darker.

Again though, different strokes for different folks, play on, my friend.

Right. It's great on 3DS.

3DS wont be getting the free DLC, 4 player battle mode that both PC and Wii U are getting. But has Streetpass features to make up for the lack of multilayer.

But other than that it's the same game, and plays great, and will still get all the other free DLC.

Won't 3DS get the other playable character DLC though?

yes

3DS will still get the DLC to play through the entire game as King Knight, Plague Knight, and Specter Knight. Just like Steam and Wii U.

The 4 player battle mode is more like (I'm guessing) an 8-bit Smash Bros type thing and 3DS wont be getting that.

Except Hyper Camelot. Hyper Camelot is great.

I really like Matsumae's Flying Machine arrangement.
TBH I prefer some of them to the original tracks.

I would swear on my life that Number 8 came straight of Double Dragon Neon.

I love the 3DS version but I'm really bummed to miss out on the 4 player battle mode... sounds epic. I haven't street passed anyone yet but the battles seem... dumb. 5 second attempts to grab the gems? Weird. Clever, but weird.

There were rumors they're considering a cross buy promotion, any news on that?...

Ye the 3ds features didn't seem that interesting. Love the wiiu version and can't wait for the multiplayer update.

This has been asked so many times but for people with both the 3DS and Wii U version, which do you prefer?

I have $21 in my eShop account and am leaning towards the Wii U version because I think the Wii U GamePad has a nicer feel to it and the d-pad is bigger ... but my poor 3DS has been collecting dust since I picked up the Wii U MK8 bundle since the end of May.

Decisions, decisions.

It be swell if I could find a single person who has this game so I could street pass with them. Everyone is stuck playing Pokemon or Animal Crossing.

Just beat it, I gotta say, I tend to dislike indie titles... this one was that rare exception, it was amazing! Really wish I could have posted to the 3DS Miiverse though :\

Edit: Nevermind, I've not posted to Miiverse on 3DS in so long I forgot how to do it, I was trying to do an AC screenshot ~_~

Which indie titles are you referencing? If you liked Shovel Knight, I can bet you dollars to donuts there are a ton of other indie titles that should similarly delight you.

Oh man, so I totally just realized something.

The game is always rendering at 400x240, and then scaling up appropriately. It explains why screenshots taken at 1080p always seem to look slightly blurred, and has those odd edges on it. I knew it looked off and now i finally understand why, and how to fix it.

So, I learned that the best way to play the game with those perfectly crisp, hard lined edges is to play at any multiple of 400x240.

For example,

  • 400x240
  • 800x480
  • 1200x720
  • 1600x960
  • 2000x1200
  • 2400x1440

I'm gonna give some comparison screenshots, of actually playing at what should be the specified res compared to the nearest common resolution.

1200x720

1280x720

There's a pretty huge difference in clarity between the two, and it seems like it would be best to play the game in a 720p, 900p, or 1440p display and scale it appropriately.

Here is the best way to display it perfectly on a 1080p display.

You have to click to view full size to appropriately see the difference.
1600x960

If anyone else wants to have perfect pixel scaling and has an Nvidia GPU, you can do it this way.

Nvidia Control Panel
Adjust Desktop Size and Position
Scaling Mode: No Scaling, Perform scaling on: GPU
Change Resolution
Customize
Create Custom Resolution
Horizontal Pixels: *Closest horizontal from list above, Vertical Pixels: *Closest example from list above*

Save and apply all of the above.

Now you can select that resolution, and play the game in borderless fullscreen. You'll get pixel perfect 1:1 scaling, and it'll look sharp, clean, and crisp.

I love the graphic sharpness in the 3DS version personally.

Does anyone notice a framerate slowdown in the mole knight fight?
The rematch
, specifically, when he summons the double row of bomb blocks.

1: The Xbox 360 was not region free, and you could also connect with accounts from other countries. Some content was region locked anyway.

2: To keep the context in place. It is about people blaming Nintendo for not having an European release. A rating may be an issue or not.
A lack of translation did not make Nintendo deny a release in the past.
(maybe eshop describtion texts?)

1. I don't see your point. When using the term "region free" I'm of course also referring to the eshop. I want every game from whatever region to be playable on every system. The 360 was generally region locked, but some games (I think most games, actually), both disc-based and digital, were playable on every system regardless of region - just like you said. Don't see what that has to do with me wanting the Wii U and 3DS to be region free.

2. What does Nintendo have to do with not having a European release? Yacht Club explicitly stated that they're still waiting for the translations (German, Spanish, British English perhaps, etc) to be completed. They're probably holding out on the European release because they believe not offering the game in multiple languages would affect sales (hint: it wouldn't).

hmmm.... 400x240?

400x240 is the 3DS's resolution which is 5:3 not 16:9

On the kickstarter page they said the PC is 408 x 225

Set up one of those Mac relay thingies for StreetPass.

(BTW, you might want to spoiler part of the second part of your post.)

Both 408x225 and 400x240 seem to get displayed without scaling, hmm! This could be useful.

If you crop it though, it looks like the actual resolution it's rendered at is 400x224.

Oddly, rendering at 1632x900 still gives that blur, even though it's a multiple of 408x225, while 1600x960 does not give blur, being a multiple of 400x240

Ended up getting the Wii U version. The Miiverse integration is a nice touch because in-game different posts appear from room to room and it doesn't interrupt gameplay, even to "Yeah" a post. Feels somewhat inspired by the the Tingle Bottles in Wind Waker HD.

A question already asked, but is their any visual differences between the 3DS and Wii U vers? Thinking about picking it up for 3DS.

I'm really enjoying the stereoscopic 3D in the game. My only issue is that it's more comfortable for me to use a Pro Controller on my Wii U than it is to use a 3DS. If you have no problems playing 3DS, it's perfectly cool to get it.

As long as we get the single player stuff, I'm cool. I can live without the battle mode. I'll get beat up anyway!

I have to agree. There are some really good tracks (Hyper Camelot, Matsumae's Flying Machine remix, Sub-atomic), but it doesn't really do as much with the chip music as I would have liked.

This is hands down my GOTY and one of the best games I have played in years. I usually hate 8 bit indie throwbacks because in my experience most of them are derivative however shovel knight takes its inspirations and makes them its own. It doesn't feel like a game I have played before as they have put some much original ideas into it. It feels familiar but new and fresh. I hope there is a sequel and I can't wait for the dlc.

I went from "Love this game!" to "FUCK THIS GAME" in a matter of days

I just bought SMTIV, Rayman 3D, and VVVVV on sale and I could give fuck all about playing them because all I wanna do is shovel. Thanks, YCG for bending my backlog over, spreading its Tinker wide and giving it the ol' Treasure Propeller.

What was I talking about again? No matter, back to New Game +!

this was a thinly veiled butt butt post

EDIT:

Hmmm....ending spoiler alert:

But was he dreaming at the end?

Goddam right
he was. That interpretation of the ending makes the whole rest of the game feel so much more profound, so that's what I'm going with until canonically disproven.

Is there any word of this coming to any other platforms? I haven't followed it's development at all. If there were to be an Xbone version, I would be interested in waiting for that.

I think they said they were considering it, but no official news yet. Maybe we'll get news after they finish all the bonus content?

Just beat in NG+
That boss rush was one of the most brutal things I've had to do in a while, especially because I wasted one of my healing ichors on a run that looked promising but then I totally fell apart
. Pretty great game both times through, and I'll for sure go after some of the feats, but it feels like it's missing just a little something and that's keeping it from being an all-time great instead of just a really good video game. If they had doubled the levels and had more platforming focused "approach" levels (structured sorta similarly to the jewel levels where you have to use certain relics to proceed, maybe, but way longer) and then more combat oriented order of no quarter stages, I think that would have made it a lot better, since both the platforming and combat are satisfying but I never felt like I got enough of either.

And now I'm off to go start my third playthrough

They've mentioned they're looking to bring it to other platforms, and I'd imagine it'll be on PS4 and Xbone eventually, but who knows when

Which levels do people think are the hardest? I just beat the 5th level and, while some of them had particularly irritating sections, I wouldn't say any of the levels was a huge pain in the ass overall. Do things pick up for the final 3?

Yeah, they're significantly harder than the first five, as are the final levels in general, which I've been finding rage inducing. They remind me of the worst parts of early Mega Man Wily stages.

I just finished Polar Knight's stage, and man was his fight rough, he was the first boss to kill me. Can any other boss
kill you in one hit?
Now to decide who to take on next. Both Tinker Knight and Propeller Knight sound cool.

Which level did you choose as your fifth, and are you playing without checkpoints? I feel like the game is fairly challenging, not Zelda 2/Castlevania levels, but it's still tough.

Clockwork Tower is fairly easy, Stranded Ship is reasonable but somewhat tricky and the Airship is considered the hardest order of no quarter stage by the greater consensus.

Some people have gotten enraged by the tower of fate though. Be a bit wary.
