Motiga announces Gigantic. 3rd person MOBA. Seriously take a look

Fortnite is considered MOBA now?

No, I think that post was just meant to point out some recent games with a bright, colorful aesthetic reminiscent of the CalArts style in 3D.

Well, when you name a genre something as generic as Multiplayer Online Battle Arena..wait that sounds more like Unreal Tournament and Q3Arena

Genre should be renamed DGG - Distilled Grinding Game

It's not really about grinding, though? Not on a micro-scale, anyway. Most games in the genre shift focus from killing creeps to teamfights as the match progresses.

At the rate that MOBAs are proliferating, there will soon be a MOBA for every single gamer in the world. At this rate, MOBAs may overtake atoms or Linux distributions for 'things there are the most of out there'.

Good luck to them, but that market is already SO saturated, and everyone who wants to play a MOBA is already playing one of the big two anyway.

Gigantic is: TPS; hobby-grade coop campaign; genre-blended, multi-mode competitive e-sports; meta-growth, choice + epic Gigantic Heroes!

I don't know why people are complaining. There aren't a lot of 3rd person MOBAs on the market.

I'm surprised no one is making a character action style moba-like game yet. Keep the 5v5 kill the base format while adding a big focus on mobility, counters/parries, cancels, and short but diverse combos.

Basically, make complex Dynasty Warriors with 5v5.

ahem....

Points to whoever can guess what pic is from what game

Gigantic, Sunset Overdrive, Fortnite, Battleborn, Arena of Fate

Those look like completely different art styles to me. What is your point?

This looks really really good.

I also dig the "Have a big creature as ancient that fights back". If its playable it would add a lot of depth and fun to the game.

Wow...those designs look fantastic....im actually interested in this now....looks really good in comparison to Gearbox's game

I don't get all the love for these exaggerated cartoony art styles for these F2P games, they're all starting to look incredibly samey to me.

Yep, it looks good, but at the same time, the hyper stylized colorful 3d cartoon style used for a moba... is just like Battleborn! Battleborn vs Gigantic lol.

Seriously though, are all of those MOBA games outside of Dota and LoL even successful? MOBA's usually need such a long time to master that I can't quite imagine that a lot of people are playing a second or even third MOBA game on the side.

Smite is supposedly doing alright. Hi-Rez say it has fairly consistent growth, and it's got a small competitive scene.

Heroes of Newerth used to be the big second place game next to LoL, and it's still kinda-sorta holding on.

Most of others are either defunct or still in closed alpha/beta, so they're not "out" enough to judge whether or not they've succeeded.

SMITE is one of my favorite games right now so I'm all for more 3rd person MOBAs. I was really hoping for some gameplay in that trailer to see how they're handling it though.

You pick a hero, level him up by killing creeps and other heroes, buy items to get better. Rinse and repeat?

This game doesn't seem to have the "killing creeps" part though. And without that part it's pretty much like most online shooters these days. Except you need to have your gigantic guardian defeat the gigantic guardian of the other team in this.

Anyway, I think the topic title needs to be changed because it's misleading.

The issue with MOBAs, much like MMORPGs, is that they require time invested. Why don't companies understand that people keep going back to WoW (MMO) or Dota2/League (MOBA) because they spent hundreds of hours learning and investing into their account/character?

That's why no MMO or MOBA launched since these behemoths has broke out. Sure, they can be successful (FFXIV and RIFT are good examples), but they're never going to be smash hits.

I'm just on MOBA overload. I play League and Dota 2 and will likely never touch another MOBA.

Pretty much. I used to try every alpha/beta for one of these but I've invested probably 1200+ hours into DotA2 and LoL and the thought of trying to invest another 300-500 hours to learn another one of these games just isn't that appealing. Every time I try a Strife or an Infinite Crisis or a Heroes of the Storm my first thought is "eh this is okay but I don't know what anyone is or does and none of my friends are playing" and then I just go back to LoL or DotA2 where my friends are and I already know how to play.

You need to offer something a little more divergent than what HotS etc are offering at this point.

"3rd person MOBA"? As opposed to the standard 1st person MOBA?

EDIT: I get it, guys, I was just being a jerk because it's wrong. Any game in which you're a disembodied camera looking at your character from the outside is 3rd person. Overhead/"isometric" is a subset of 3rd person.

Smite is doing ok from what i hear, they managed to carve out a niche by going 3rd person.
Awesomenauts did ok too i think.

Most mobas announced recently aren't out yet. Even blizzards Hots is still in closed beta. It will take a while to see which end up sucessful.

I still think there's room for alternate takes on the genre and i do believe there's sucess to be had with a well made first or 3rd person moba on consoles. They likely won't reach LoL levels but that game is so mindnumbingly huge that every other game looks small by comparison.

They're trying to differentiate themselves with the Guardian fighting alongside your team, but if it isn't playable is just a overpowered creep?

Smite is doing just fine because it's actually different. The other games that are just like LoL with some gameplay twist (Dawngate) probably won't get a huge audience.

If you are going to introduce yet another "MOBA" it should be really different from what already exist, otherwise there really isn't a reason for it to exist at all.

Why do all these Moba games have the same art style

As in the almost cartoon style (I like it but I don't care for MOBAs)? I am not sure.

They want to be able to run on toasters

This I can believe.

FortNite is NOT a tower defense game either. Where are you people getting this info? Seriously, I need to know where the confusion is.

The gameplay I saw was a 3rd person defend your base game like Sanctum with better building. That is tower defense to me.

Because when people talkf of Age of Empires or Starcraft, they say "3rd person camera"... no. That's overhead or isometric camera.

Overhead and isometric are variants on a third-person camera. "Third person" distinguishes the camera setup from first-person games, not from overhead or isometric games.

Had you only told Crytek...

Well, MOBA is the broadest term ever. So the game would still fit under it even without creeps. Because it is a multiplayer online battle arena.

MOBA is the dumbest name ever given to a type of games.
