Motiga announces Gigantic. 3rd person MOBA. Seriously take a look

So I checked out the gameplay footage.

I'm not really interested any more but the environmental art is great. (As are the effects, because they remind me Wind Waker.)

Those look like completely different art styles to me. What is your point?

We've had so many brown games for years now that people are having a hard time seeing past the fact that there are, in fact, games that use colour.

They exploit the reward center of the brain, they're literally addictive.

Every game does this.

The reason MOBAs are popular are the same reason sports are popular. People like team based games with structured rulesets and a field that is consistent across every game.

People keep comparing MOBAs with MMORPGs when they are far more closer to a game of soccer.

I like the sound of all of this. I'm happy to see new games use MOBAs as an influence for doing their own thing as opposed to copying the formula of a game that I could be playing already.

Indeed. We have games with things "RPG elements", "roguelike elements" and even "Dark Souls elements", it's just a matter of time for MOBA elements to start showing up in games that are more and more distant from the standard MOBA (or not MOBAs at all).

ahem....

Points to whoever can guess what pic is from what game

Gigantic, Fortnite, Sunset Overdrive, Battleborn, Arena of Fate

Even though it's labeled color, it still looks kinda brown to me.

The old Crash Bandicoot games have more color to me.

Looks like it could be interesting imo. I don't really like the diablo like control system most MOBAs go for, so 3rd person is a welcome design choice for me. It looks more like PvP taken out of a MMO more than anything which is great really, as that's something I'd love to see do well(Most games that have tried it haven't...). That said, still need to see more I guess, and I'm not sure this could be that popular considering it doesn't seem to have that much backing and it's a rather crowded market if they are going to call it a MOBA.

Strange, got into the alpha instantly upon signing up. Anyway, I doubt anything outside of LoL, Dota 2, HoN (because its old) and Heroes of the Storm will actually continue doing successfully well/do well in the MOBA genre. The simple fact is no one wants to invest 100+ hours into a game and then have to move on over and re-learn a completely different game, its what happens with new MMOs after WoW and will continue doing so.

I'm happy to be proven wrong, but so far any new MOBA has just fallen flat on their face unless they have a large developer behind it like Blizzard, Riot or Valve. Hell even S2's new casual MOBA is barely getting air time.

Graphics are pretty good and the gigantic creature thing is pretty interesting. Still not sure about the combat but I rather play this than the horrible looking smite.

In case anyone's interested, the VP of Product Development, James Phinney, is a Blizz veteran and was a Lead Designer and Producer on the original Starcraft and one of the leading Designers of the original Guild Wars. They've got a really strong team and even though I'm not really interested in MOBAs I'll definitely keep an eye on this.

Really like, because it doesn't seem like another Dota/LoL clone. Just an action game with gamemode spiced up with light MOBA elements. I think such title can succeed when other generic MOBA die.
I hate MOBAs and I'm interested in this game. I guess that's the audience they're aiming for.

Thank You! I agree. You can't tell me that LoL players will even take a second look at this. Then again I myself have never figured out why this genre is so popular.

I don't think they are aiming at LoL playerbase to be honest, so it's pretty meaingless. This looks like something for action games fans, not MOBA fans.

And SMITE still plays closer to MOBA, not action game, despite the perspective.

I think generally the basic set up for MOBAs can work well for other genres. If you make Dota clone you are bound to fail, but taking the ruleset for game mode and applying it to different genres can work.

Whilst this has moba elements anyone dismissing it purely based on a genre expectation should really look again. Looks more like class based fantasy domination to me, with a sprinkling of moba. Not to mention moba means multiplayer online battle arena... which pretty much sums up any shooter also.

The details for those who don't have time to watch the video:

  • Multiple maps
  • No set base for respawn. You respawn on an airship that moves around the map during the game.
  • No lanes. No towers. More about territory control points.
  • You summon the minions yourself at the control points. Larger more powerful ones take longer to summon. Allies being nearby speeds summoning. Summoning minions on the enemy's side of the map takes longer.
  • Different minions have different abilities. Some ambush. Some heal your team.
  • Hero customization comes from branching skill points as opposed to item buying.
  • You power up your guardian to attack the other team's guardian and make it vulnerable. When vulnerable you need to wail on it for as long as you can.
  • Didn't catch specifically how you power up your guardian.
  • The guardian has 3 "wounds" which are basically health bars. Once you knock out a health bar, they get up and are no longer vulnerable. Vulnerability is also timed so they can be defended.
  • When not vulnerable, the guardian will attack nearby enemies.
  • When the game has gone on for a certain amount of time or if one of the guardians get's down to it's last wound, "The Clash" activates. Both Guardians break in to the middle of the map and the arena becomes smaller and more concentrated.
So from the looks and sounds of it, this is more of a PvP arena battle game with a lot of MOBA influences as opposed to the other way around.

Yeah that's my take on it too, for the moment. The gameplay vid didn't show the characters I wanted to see though so I'm sad.

Yep, it doesn't seem that follows the core formula of MOBA with lanes and creeps spawning in bases and a structured experience and feeding. Here the respawn times are shorter, you can appear almost in the middle of the map jumping from the airship-base, the action is fast (hell and the gameplay video was with the tank!) and you can cap any point without order. It's more 30% MOBA, 70% an action pvp game.

What ? I'm so jealous. Are you sure it's not just the sign-up confirmation e-mail ?

Edit : Re-read that mail, and indeed it's not clear wether or not it means you'll get the client or just are registered on the possible list of alpha players.

"Keep an eye on your inbox—when we're ready to test, we'll send you an email with instructions on how to download the client and get yourself Gigantic!"

The "when we're ready to test" could just as well mean "whenever we pick your name from the list" as "whenever the alpha starts".

I presume by the wording it directly means "you are in the alpha" but I may be wrong on that.

Pls tell me how dota is grinding

I mean, having to go kill creeps and the big dangerous NPC monsters to gain experience to unlock skills that actually matter. It's grindy to me, and you have to do it every single match. Games like Dota is obviously not for me, I can see how people enjoy it though, loved the hero units in Warcraft 3 for example.

If Valve made an RTS using Dota 2's style, I would be in heaven.

Edit:

every game you basically grind gold an experience in a 45ish minute time frame before going out to whomp other players with your levels and loot. it's like a compressed competitive rpg

Or this, worded it better than I did.

Four pages and no lol furries yet? I'm disappointed, GAF.

Anyway, mad talent behind it and I'm interested. Also, when did it get cool to hate on colorful, non-photorealistic games? Is cartoony the new "grey and brown?"

Yeah, that's what I thought.

I put my email down and got the same email. Does seem odd that they're letting everyone who puts their email down in though. Maybe they've got a limit which hasn't been hit yet, or something.

Wish we could see more gameplay footage. I personally enjoy mobas, but I feel they're to locked on to their Warcraft roots. So this seems like a cool change.

Thanks for the information.

Got an email just now that said I was invited to alpha, pretty neat. Check your emails if you have signed up for the alpha :))
