SDCC2014 | Nintendo Challenge: Live @ SDCC & Smash 3DS Tournament

On an OG 3DS, what I own, I thought it was still a good size. Honestly, nothing is hard to see. Even when the camera is zoomed out to like 100%, it felt very, very nice and was very visible.

The higher density screen helps a lot.

I have a detailed impressions I wrote up earlier I can link people to if they wish.

Yeah I was looking for your impression but couldn't find it haha. Could you link it for me please?

Why post in that tone? That was only one single tournament, not to mention under settings that don't showcase the actual game mechanics well. I'm talking on a more frequent basis, like weekly streams or regular progress reports. That E3 Smash tournament where a couple pro players played for the first time doesn't really show anything. If they want to instill confidence that this game can be played at high levels and have long legs, then they should more effective with how gameplay is shown, encompassing everything from game settings to who the person showing it off is.

I also find it bizarre how Nintendo speaks to its fanbase as if we haven't been playing their games for decades.

I am happy they are explaining Smash. I know about and play the games, but I have been confused on the terms people use. I never understood Tilt-A or Up-Tilt or whatever. I know Smash, I know the Bs, Guards, Air, and Sdies, but tilts confused me. According to the stream, Side-A and Side-Tilt are the same thing.

People are actually getting this bent out of shape for what's essentially an alpha build of a game played wirelessly in a non-optimal environment?

At the same time, the defending is also kinda funny. Leave it to the people to make their own minds up and stick to what you like. After sharing your opinions the first time, it was good enough.

Getting rid of DI might have been a good plan for Online.

DI's in, what are you talking about?

Game ran fine at Smash Fest. I'll just say that much and leave. Really do think some other things are factoring in here.

Like likely dozens to hundreds of 3DS units in a single area, plus hundreds of phones, broadcasting equipment and various other electronics?

Nah, obviously the game is broken beyond repair.

Why couldn't they get the MEGA MAN!!!! announcer back? He was awesome...:(

D1 couldn't make it, too short notice.

Also, Toph/Scar are clearly limited in what they are able to say -- they aren't usually like this. Plus, I'm not sure what you're expecting from FFA matches commentary-wise. It'll get better in the 1v1 matches. Just enjoy the gameplay or mute the stream if you somehow really can't stand their commentary.

what other games do this
Killer Instinct did this before it released, garnering a lot of support from its fanbase which propelled it to success come launch. Without that kind of attention to detail with its marketing strategies, Killer Instinct probably wouldn't have been as HYPE and loved before most people even got to put their hands on it. Not just fighting games too, look at what's going on with Unreal Tournament and their streams; these strategies have proven to be very effective with many other games, spanning multiple genres and platforms.

Explain to me why they can't do streams of the game being played before it's released? Clearly people know it's a work in progress (like they're aware of when watching this stream), so getting the fans more involved and maybe even get some legit feedback could pay off exponentially. When you block off people and only showcase a game that a great deal of its fanbase wants to be competitive at all levels of play to be played and explained by people who don't have that knowledge/experience, it can hurt the image of the game, especially before it's released.

Basically, here's the main issue here:

Bad = Potential for stuttering when playing (3)DS games with synchronized netcode
Gud = Very high chance of things going smoothly.

This stream uses the "Bad" set-up. Combine that with interference and BAM!, lag. This is why Nintendo tells you to point the (3)DS's at each other and to sit somewhat close together. The 3DS's wireless is also very fucking sensitive to any sort of barrier. Anything from tables to cardboard can fuck things up.

And for fuck sake's guys, the game itself runs fine. We have plenty of footage from E3 and it ran pretty smoothly there.

Inteliheath asked so this is what I look like. I'm giving the knee of justice. Hopefully it loads.

Edit: I can't do squat from my phone.

Hahaha, you look awesome by performing a glorious knee. Good luck with your tournament, and same to you, Anthony.

All stages are laggy. Even battlefield :(

Also I found a sick strat.

Well, it's weird that many people are saying many different things but I put it down for interference but I'm going to wait to pick up my game so I can judge for myself.

Wait, your position when playing matters that much? I played side by side at best buy, maybe if we played head to head it wouldn't have lagged?

Also, cool to hear bill acknowledge the lag.

Same. What I'm saying is that they need to do more of that by people who know how to articulate those things effectively, and maybe even do some tutorials/advanced tech detailing in the game itself.

Lol, great post.
