July 2014 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes August 12th

Arrgggg!!!!! I'm another who forgot to vote. I need to set up a calendar event to remind me.

As for the XB1, there is no way it's July numbers will match June's. June got a bump from the new $399 SKU release, a demand shift from May to June for those waiting for the SKU because it was announced so early, and E3. None of that applies to July. Although the availability of the $399 SKU will raise July's weekly sale rate above May's, it will still be lower that June's.

July 2013 sales were extremely low and there wasn't two new systems, the surprising thing would be that there wasn't a sizable growth.

PS4 alone should nearly match Xbox 360 + PS3 + Wii + Wii U.

Those wii u numbers were rough. Good thing they are improving.

Not to mention June was a 5 week month where as July was only 4 weeks.

That's why I said weekly sales rate. The average weekly sales will be lower for July in comparison to June. I'd have used some numbers but I'm on mobile which makes it a bit of a pain to look up.

Edit: Oh you were just commenting on overall monthly number. Yea, that true too. With fewer weeks there is absolutely no way the sales will come close to June's.

Dont know if the site is allowed but insiderp has TLOUR selling 1.5M copies in 24 hours. They have been pretty spot on with PS4 hardware numbers.

Holy ... that's insanely good if true.

I guess that would really mean that a large percentage of Playstation 4 owners never bought a Playstation 3 in gen 7.

Right, that pattern is exactly what I was describing. But data has a way of clarifying or cementing what we think we know. Seeing the June rate revert to ~April was quite revealing last month.

Sorry, read a bit too quickly. I got trigger happy when it seemed like many believed we knew little about the effect :p

PS4 nearly matching June's numbers in a 4 week month? TLoU:R could be a system seller, but I don't think it's one that could increase the numbers that much.

I know this is a hardware predictions thread but I'm really interested to see how TLoU did. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it was sold out at many retailers in my area which usually means it's doing quite well.

I took advantage of the EB $25 trade in deal. Totally worth it.

Well I expect that Xbox expatriates are the reason for the increase in PlayStation sales.

I think the opposite actually. That Xbone number is way too low and the PS4 is probably just a bit high. I would imagine something like 200k for PS4.

Why would the PS4 lose ~80k from the month prior? I can't imagine one less week leading to that kind of a freefall.

NeoGAF Aggregate Predictions - Jul-2014

1. PS4 - 221K
2. XB1 - 131K
3. 3DS - 108K
4. WIU - 90K
5. 360 - 48K
6. PS3 - 34K

Hmm, I don't know why, but I think the NeoGAF aggregate for the Wii U is a little low. Were so many people actually expecting the Wii U to already drop below 100k?

Growth in hardware and accessory (Skylanders) is expected.

I'll be surprised if software is up year-over-year because there was no NCAA Football for the first time in 15 years. The Last of Us needs to have operated a miracle in five days for that to happen.

How much does NCAA football usually sell? If it sold well why not release another one?

Road posted a way to do that once with Gmail. Maybe someone still remembers it?

Want to say something like 1m combined across platforms? May be out-of-date on that number. As to why none this year, NCAA didn't renew the license, since they're dealing with the problem of licensing player likenesses without paying the players or something like that.

I don't generally follow the results of the prediction threads. How close does the combined aggregate prediction tend to be against the actuals?

Make a Google calendar event. You can set as many reminders as you want with one of the types being email. I'll set up two events. The first will be when the prediction thread usually starts, and the second for when it ends. I'll have the first send me an email the day of the thread start, and the second send me a email a day before it ends.

Rest of it

Mario Kart 8 has now sold more than 1 million total units in the United States alone, becoming the second Wii U game to cross that milestone, along with New Super Mario Bros. U (1.69 million). Mario Kart 8 continues to drive momentum for the Wii U platform. Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013.

Notable Wii U games on the way this year include: Hyrule Warriors (Sept. 26), Bayonetta 2 (October), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Holiday) and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Holiday). These games will be joined by amiibo, Nintendo’s foray into the toys-to-life category, which will launch this holiday season. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first game to support amiibo. Other games that will support amiibo include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more to come.

The continued strength of the Nintendo 3DS platform can be attributed to the breadth and quality of its overall lineup of software. To date, more than 40 million Nintendo 3DS software units have been sold in the United States alone. This includes 41 titles with a Metacritic score of 80 or higher, seven of which have a score of 90 or higher; and nine games that have sold at least 1 million units in the U.S. alone:

Mario Kart 7: 3.48 million
Super Mario 3D Land: 3.09 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2: 2.28 million
Pokémon X: 2.10 million
Pokémon Y: 2.01 million
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D: 1.39 million
Animal Crossing: New Leaf: 1.36 million
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon: 1.33 million
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds: 1.09 million
Four of the 10 best-selling software SKUs for July are exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS platform. This includes Tomodachi Life, which finished at No. 5 and sold more than 85,000 units in its second month, and Pokémon Y (No. 8), Pokémon X (No. 9) and Mario Kart 7 (No. 10). Those last three games appeared on the list despite being on the market for 10 months, 10 months and 31 months, respectively.

The Last of Us Remastered debuted in the UK selling practically the same as InFAMOUS: Second Son. According to the NPD, the latter sold 461,000 units in its first month but it had more days of tracking (16 vs 5). Big releases such as InFAMOUS: Second Son are pretty front-loaded, so it made most of its sales in its first days. Considering this, I would expect The Last of Us Remastered to debut in the same range of sales, although I have a gut feeling that it will do even better.

I get ~83k for July for Wii U.

EDIT: there's no mention in the PR that Nintendo is using NPD numbers, though.
