Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeINyD6bdMw

The game is a side scrolling RTS of sorts. Looks meatier than the general Japanese mobile card game stuff, so people probably should be too pissed off. It's developed by Oriflamme, a new mobile developer headed by Ryuji Ikeda, the main programmer for Dissidia Final Fantasy. There are a number of ex-S-E staff too, some of whom are very interesting.

The staff list at the end of the trailer:

Developers:
Ryuji Ikeda (Main Programmer for Dissidia Final Fantasy)
Kentaro Yasui (Main Programmer for Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII [lol])
Takaaki Mizuno
Akinori Ishiai (VFX and Battle Programmer for Dissidia Final Fantasy)
Yu Yoshikawa
Yusuke Nozawa
Yuko Ikeda (Event Motion Designer for Final Fantasy XIII)

Production Designer: Tatsuya Yoshikawa (Character Designer for Breath of Fire series)
Sound Designer: Masayoshi Umezu (Ex-Capcom Sound Designer)
Director of Photography: Tomonori Hori
Written by: Kenichi Iwao (World Concept Planning for Final Fantasy XIV), Alexander O Smith (Localization God)

It looks like it could be decent enough given it has a fun management system and isn't filled with IAP bullshit.

The funniest news here is definitely that Kentaro Yasui has really left S-E. I wonder if Hiroshi Harata also left and is just at some other place now. FFXV is a fucking disaster.

Meh there are already too many tower defense games.

Kinda off-topic but is Sakaguchi's new phone game tower defense too?

You are woefully mistaken, FFXV has "GOTG" potential.

Nomura will see to that.

It gotten to the point where whatever FFXV turns out being (since I'm positive that the E3 footage is not at all representative) it will be bad simply because there is no way it could live up to a decade worth of hype.

The important staff leaving S-E is way more newsworthy than the awful mobile game they're making.

Then again, if this is the caliber of game they're going to make after leaving, maybe it doesn't matter that much at all anyway.

Exactly what I was about to say!

However, Alexander O Smith's involvement makes me veeeery interested.

I updated the title a bit to reflect where they left from.

Tatsuya Yoshikawa?!

Is this the first real confirmation of his departure from Capcom post-Last Ranker? Try as I might, I could never find anything saying as much, so I always just assumed he had been rotting away in a Capcom basement somewhere.

This looks awful :/

Like visually. It seems to be a similar concept to metal slug defense but with ugly "flash" looking sprites and what appears to be a quasi-warhammer ripoff art style. The game might end up serviceable, but I'm out.

It's been so long I just assumed he went freelance at some point. Seems to be pointless sticking around as a designer at a company when your work isn't in demand.

You're totally right, I just always figured his departure would be a bit more high profile since he was a huge part of their old, ridiculously talented design team.

Still, I'm just happy he's still working on stuff in any capacity, really.

Oh, and I think the game looks pretty neat. Plenty of Japanese mobile devs have been figuring out how to make good mobile games, so my fingers are crossed that this turns out all right. Lots of talent behind it.

*FFXV in title + bad news* is me feeling like this is more and more likely:

Yeah he's a huge reason why I bought BoF5 in the first place (loved the cover, bought it on impulse, found out after that it was actually an awesome game!), and why I have artbooks for BoF5 and Last Ranker.

I did a little more digging, and it seems he might have left years ago?

Back when Ubisoft released Assassin's Creed 3 in Japan, they had 2 special guest illustration wallpapers - one by Tomoko Nishii at Platinum Games, and one by Tatsuya Yoshikawa. Capcom isn't mentioned anywhere, which would be very unusual if he's still an employee.

So this is where Tatsuya Yoshikawa went. I really miss his art in that... other... upcoming mobile game.

This being translated by Alexander O Smith, is it naive to hope for a meaty story?

Off topic: that wallpaper by Tomoko Nishii is so cute. Desmond eaten by bear. Haha.

Understatement of the year.

SE is lucky they have FFXIV, I don't even know how they would be right now without it.

Lol the only thing keeping me interested in square is Nomura. I almost want him to leave as well, just so he can go somewhere and actually use his talents.

Edit: Besides being a Character Designer. I find it hilarious that he is used as a marketing tool on games he didn't even make.

SE's main releases are employees.

They lost FFXVs main programmer to a mobile game?! Ahahahahaha

He'd like to have shipped games on his resume.

Good. Man's damn talented with a creative whimsy to his output that shows serious talent.

I'm just glad he's not going to waste any more.

What does "World Concept Planning" mean? Is the game who designed Eorzea no longer working on FFXIV?

Iwao left S-E years ago, shortly after FFXIV originally tanked. Before that he was deeply involved in the setting design for both FFXI and FFXIV - characters, items and equipment, naming lots of stuff, story details, etc. Incidentally, he also directed Parasite Eve 2. *cough*

I just wonder what had to happen for the main programmer to leave the project for a mobile game. We also have the technical director of the Luminous Engine that left the company too...

Hmm, I like his work as a world planner then. I feel like Eorzea as a concept has gotten a bit muddier since the good/bad old days.
