Ex-Square Enix devs (KH, FF14, FF15, Dissidia) announce Chaos Centurions for mobile

Ahahahahaha.
Hahahhahaha.
Except for the gotg comment, Nomura hasn't made a bad game since he moved up, so I don't see what's so funny.

Then again I am not too grounded/blinded in square soft nostalgia to see the problem.

A programmer can only improve a game, they can't make a game good. Nomaru is still in charge.

Hmm, I like his work as a world planner then. I feel like Eorzea as a concept has gotten a bit muddier since the good/bad old days.

He seems like a hardcore medieval settings fanboy too. Seems to really like European style armor and stuff. One of the non-game things he did somewhat recently was acting as a setting supervisor for the Berserk movies. Lol.

looks great
shame with all that credentials
they couldn't come up something that (on initial judgment) doesn't look like another reskinned version of all the same games on iOS

will keep a close eye on it for Yoshikawa though

Yeah, the overall presentation in this video makes it look kinda bland, or at least early work (uninspired menu elements, same placeholder-ish scenery through the whole trailer, etc). Definitely not writing it off, but for now the staff's pedigree has more of my interest than the game itself.

Maybe they're all broke so they're rushing this out? Maybe not releasing something for 10 years has them just wanting to finish a project for the sake of remembering what that is like?

What? It's not like he's wrong. Unless you have some proof showing otherwise, I believe in Nomura. Yeah the game has taken a long time to come out but Nomura generally doesn't make bad games.

I mean, unless you think KH3 will be GOTG instead. That could always happen too!

This game actually doesn't look that impressive to be honest. I wish I knew what the one game on iOS that was similar to this was called. It was like Orcs vs Elves and it had all sorts of units you could upgrade and get spells to cast on the field. It's essentially the same gameplay.

Developers really need to step their game up for mobile. Or maybe these small shallow games is what the public wants.

For me though, I want to see more games with the depth of Chaos Rings or Song Summoner.

The lack of dynamic shadows on the sprites kind of kills the look for me and the tone of the trailer is way too turn of the millennium. I'll still keep an eye out for this one because the talent seems to be there.

Yeah he's a huge reason why I bought BoF5 in the first place (loved the cover, bought it on impulse, found out after that it was actually an awesome game!), and why I have artbooks for BoF5 and Last Ranker.

I did a little more digging, and it seems he might have left years ago?

http://www.ubisoft.co.jp/ac3/special/spe_wallpaper.html

Back when Ubisoft released Assassin's Creed 3 in Japan, they had 2 special guest illustration wallpapers - one by Tomoko Nishii at Platinum Games, and one by Tatsuya Yoshikawa. Capcom isn't mentioned anywhere, which would be very unusual if he's still an employee.

Huh, I totally remember that wallpaper (it was also in Famitsu if I remember correctly). It totally never dawned on me that there was no Capcom mentioned.

He also has a tiny credit in MvC3, but that might just be reused art assets.

Be free, Yoshikawa, BE FREE!

Man, people are jumping from Square left and right.

Ya dun fucked it up, Square.

It is very telling that people who leave SE end up making smartphone games. People keep saying "Give them the director chair and watch them make a great RPG like <insert old title they worked on>. Yet the first chance to do so they make a rather mediocre looking phone game. You really see here why SE does what they do. Everyone wants a piece of the very lucrative phone market.

I like that you believe that FF15 will see the light of day.

Are you thinking of Battleheart / Battleheart Legacy?

Iwao left S-E years ago, shortly after FFXIV originally tanked. Before that he was deeply involved in the setting design for both FFXI and FFXIV - characters, items and equipment, naming lots of stuff, story details, etc. Incidentally, he also directed Parasite Eve 2. *cough*

He was also a planner and wrote the scenario of BIO HAZARD (Resident Evil). He's the only reason the story in the game is any good.
