Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Yep, we are going to see retail and download exclusives and enhanced titles, just like with the DSi, a successor to the DS which in an uncommon move came out in the same gen (7th) as the DS!

2 7th gen handhelds, 2 8th gen handhelds? Nintendo's not stopping! Expect the New 3DS to have a lifespan akin to the GBC and DSi.

Beyond hyped for this one, this is making me want to play on my DSi right now!
I wouldnt really call it a successor in the traditional way if the majority of games works on the 3DS. Then the games are originally 3DS games.

Nintendo should have just waited another year and released 4DS with more upgrades
- All the features of New 3DS (Amiibos, extra buttons)
- Dual Sliders (not a shit C stick)
- Higher Res Capacitive top screen
- Powerful as a Vita or more
- Full backwards compatability with DS/3DS as well as VC support for N64 and all past consoles

Nintendo is trying to squeeze the last bit of revenue out of a continually stagnating 3DS market while they can.

Successor will come, but the timing is awkward at this point. Nintendo needs to match up with their home consoles if,they are going to do shared architecture/ecosystem.

At least the 3DS XL was shown worldwide, was that a bigger successor to the 3DS?
XL isn't a successor or a redesign; it's a concurrent.

DS has had no redesign and 2 concurrents, DSi had no redesign and 1 concurrent, DS had 1 redesign and no concurrents, and the GBA had 1 redesign (GBA SP, which itself had an update) and 1 concurrent.

It's not that hard to see.

Ok i decided to just keep my 3DS XL which i bought 2 months ago.

If I really need to play the exclusive games released only on the new 3ds, the i will just wait till the 4DS to do so.

Nintendo, you do not get my money again.

I don't get why people are calling the second pointing device a "c-stick." It seems pretty obvious to me that it's like a laptop nub, i.e. high resistance, very low travel. That's qualitatively very different from a second stick that's identical in every area except the cap.

Don't you think that would be uncomfortable to hold, with the primary buttons so low? The analog slider is the primary control method, so it's more line with that. I couldn't imagine holding the DS neat the bottom like that to play.
Would my suggestion work better if the second analog stick was below the buttons then? Similar to an Xbox controller?

I don't own a 3DS so I'm not sure how it handles. That tiny second stick just looks very hard to control.

I don't get why everyone is complaining about the brand issue. You all know the difference, why do you care about people who don't? I'm sure they can figure it out, and in the long run of Nintendo is hurt by this then that's on them. Also about these new games just don't buy the new 3ds if you don't want to. I'm gonna sell or trade my XL and buy one screw the haters.

Only question is should I buy the XL or not, the smaller one looks so good.

? I don't even know where to start with this post.

Yep, it's a minor successor, one that could easily be mistaken by a revision by the masses, but a successor nonetheless.

I don't get this at all, it's not a successor. By that definition then a GeForce GTX 780 with higher clocks and double the ram is a successor to an ordinary GTX 780 if we go with that kind of logic

These are completely different.

GBC was a new hardware line, as was GBA.

The revisions are:

Game Boy - Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance - SP ABS- SP AGS- Micro
DS - DS Lite - DSi - DSi XL

The difference is that, all these machines had the same buttons and played the same games. This is a totally separate situation. Nintendo is making what is supposed to be a new model of the 3DS, but it has more controls on it (ie games that need it) and will have its own set of games exclusive to this revision. This is entirely different from just a visual or form factor refresh.

Okay, but they still produced the GB while they sold the GBC. It wasn't discontinued until 2003 along with the GBC, when the GBA SP released. That, and the GBC carts looked very similar to GB carts, and would fit into a GB.

The DSi had games exclusive to it. It wasn't as bad, because there were only a couple of physical games that were exclusive, and there was an online store for the rest of them, but still. Besides, the extra buttons can be added to the OG 3DS with an add-on, and games can be enhanced for the New 3DS while still being playable on the OG 3DS- like some GB games, and some DS games. I doubt there will be very many exclusively New 3DS games.

GB colour came 9 years after the gameboy. At a time when GB was invredibly obsolete.

Like you said the SP didnt shaft original GBA owners at all

DSi didnt really affect ds owners in the way that the new 3ds is capable of. An extra stick, buttons and horsepower are a whole different ball game to a camera.

But you could still easily acquire a normal GB when the GBC released. They also looked nearly identical, and used nearly identical carts.

The DSi had more than just the camera. It had better hardware just like in this case, and exclusive games as well (though they were mostly sold through the DSiWare store which couldn't be accessed by the normal DS). There were also DSi enhanced games as well that had features exclusive to the DSi.

The extra buttons added on the New 3DS have been available in the form of an add-on, so you're only missing out on the extra processing power, and likely just a few exclusives. I really feel like Nintendo is going to make the vast majority of future 3DS games compatible with both, except the New 3DS will have enhanced graphics and controls.

I wonder if the improved specs will allow for the iOS Dragon Quest 8 port....hmmm

Anyhow, I just recently imported a US cobalt blue 3DS, so I'll get the 'New regular 3DS' when it releases in the EU.

Also, looking at the DSi to 3DS differences, I wonder if this 3DSi will inform us of Nintendo's plans going forward. I'm guessing the additional buttons will be to effectively absorb the entire dedicated games market (read: Vita market) in Japan, as well as have parity re inputs with their home console(s).

Do we have the official specs for this?

How much did the CPU improve? What kind of chipset&clockspeed?

Is the 256MB RAM confirmed?

Sorry I haven't been keen on this thread

Because that's what it's called. It's all over the official materials and floppin out of Iwata-Sama's gob.

I didn't, and most people won't either. Just because members from Gaf know the difference, doesn't mean little Jimmy that wants that New 3DS game that he is oh so looking forward to play on his OG 3DS is gonna know the difference either. It's the same situation with the Wii and Wii U

I'll pick it up, seems like a decent way to tide over the wait for the next handheld. I am getting very tired of Nintendo's delays though, I wish they would try to do more worldwide launches. 2015 it is I guess..

I've accepted the resolution thing, at least the system will be a lot snappier and have some added graphical effects.

Oh yeah, it's such a big next-gen reveal that it was revealed only on a Nintendo Direct for only one market. At least the 3DS XL was shown worldwide, was that a bigger successor to the 3DS?
Exactly. I remember some people saying the DSi was the the DS' actual successor and not to expect anything for a while, hah. If anything, Nintendo needs to ride out the system for another year cause they clearly won't have anything new ready for next year. If they didn't do this, 3DS sales would probably fall even further next year. It's already 1m behind YoY in Japan.

Better 3D? I hope that means a better screen (although no res increase is still a pisser).

Second stick is a good move, though I'm not sure that the nipple style was the right way to go. Guess I'd need to try it.

Disappointed that there's no spec bump. The machine's just too weak.

There is a spec bump tho (CPU mentioned and likely RAM). Xenoblade only runs on the new 3DS because of it.

Wii U is gibberish. It is a non term. It means nothing.

New 3DS is literally as unambiguous as you could conceivably make a name. It's almost embarrassing. They put NEW in the NAME.

and here i was ready to snag a 2ds for smash, gosh if i was a nintendo fan id have invested alot in the 3ds

It's kind of annoying, but they have done it before with stuff like Game Boy to Game Boy Color, and i guess Apple is getting away with it with their Iphone iterations right now too. It sucks but at least the higher specs are a valid excuse for it being exclusive (sort of).

Besides at least it will have some BC with "old" 3DS games. Hopefully with DS games too, otherwise I won't be upgrading for a while...

Guess I'm just a arse then oh well

circle pad pro has all those controls its a $15 addon you can buy now. gbc and dsi had there own exclusive retail games, but a majority of games still worked on the prior systems. black cart gbc games still run on a gameboy. dsi got enhanced ds carts for some added features.

both gbc and dsi had hardware increases internally to handle ingame camera use or color/sprite animations.

this is a 3dsi lol

GB colour came 9 years after the gameboy. At a time when GB was invredibly obsolete..

the pocket version of gameboy in different color schemes came out a year and a half gameboy color release in NA, and in japan they got a backlit gameboy light in april of 1998 a few months before japans gameboy color release.

Nintendo hasn't even acknowledged the existence of the device outside of Japan yet, so we'll need to see what Nintendo does to get people to know the difference.

The new 3DS model doesn't have any logos on the back and looks extremely sexy as a result.

The LL version has labeling on the rear of the unit that looks terrible in comparison.

Yes, yes. I need more reasons to justify a downgrade from the XL. Please continue.

Anyone else feel that releasing this will divide their consumer base? Im sure that not everyone that has a 3ds will go out and purchase the 'new' 3ds. And im sure that consumers will be disappointed to realize that the new game they purchased was not compatible with their old 3ds.

Each to their own, but I have 0 incentive to get this new version. I played Xenoblade on the Wii (well, Wii U) and I can play Smash and Monster Hunter on Wii U as well. I don't actually know of any upcoming games not called Pokemom that are worth getting on 3DS.

I wonder if Microsoft will get any ideas from this And introduce an Xbox 230.

This is really cool, though it will without a doubt fragment the userbase of 3DS. In fact, I'm baffled why they kept the 3DS name since it's almost an entirely different system altogether.

This is not the first time they are doing this. Besides, I bet most games will still be playable on all 3DS machines. There's no way they will ignore the current 40+ million 3DS owners.

Sounds disgusting, not what I want for a stick that's supposed to let me play games like kid Icarus left handed.

My 3DS XL is two years old and has a stain on the inside of the top screen, but I just bought new glasses, so this upgrade is gonna have to wait a while.

Damn, you'd hope they would have improved the screen quality, added way more RAM and a much nicer CPU/GPU, but I think they'll do that for any future handheld.

They need to secure third party development again, very few non-Nintendo games have sold well, and I don't know how many are even in development in terms of AAA quality.

Can't help but feel like this is too little too late, but I guess we'll see how this plays out. It also feels like yet another half-measure from Nintendo, where they ask for a lot of money for something that only feels like a minor step up from where they're at today. I don't know how I'd go about justifying the purchase of such a system and I doubt they'll offer a trade-in program.

i'm excited... for my money, just getting a little speed boost when opening/changing apps or going back "home" will be worth the money of upgrading.

What I'm probably going to do is, get the small white N3DS with purple faceplates. So everybody thinks it's like the butt ugly NA SNES until I open it and reveal the glory of Super Famicom/PAL SNES.

Thanks lol

Idk I don't really factor other consumers into my evaluation of a product so this seems pretty alright to me.

I do understand the brand confusion though.

Usually, stuff that I look at, I know exactly what it is and what it's for. When Nintendo announced Wii U, I knew it was a new console right away. It had a bad name, but it had a clear difference. I'm as "hardcore" (such a stupid term I know but just humor me anyway) with video games as you can get...mostly. XD and I'm sure many people here are as well.

This? This is the first time in a while before someone told me here that I got confused of what I'm looking at. What this product really is and how much of a difference it is between the two products. If someone here didn't tell me that this New 3DS is a new handheld and that games released for it will not be able to play on my regular 3DS, I would have been none the wiser.

That doesn't happen to me a lot. So if someone like ME got confused, what are the chances that little jimmy will get confused too? And that's why such simple yet effective things like naming your product is so huge. :(

Guys, we need a New 3DS version of this:
