Xenoblade announced for New 3DS

I can't believe people are still upset about a revision to, what will be, a 4 year old piece of hardware. I'm absolutely astonished at how poorly some on GAF are taking this whole thing. Shit, the Xbox 360 came out four years after the Xbox and people didn't cry, they were excited.

The X360 was a complete new system, much more powerful. The new 3DS is just a stepping stone.

Desperate for what? That battle looked really odd to me. Baffling that they even showed it like that to me.
It looked like it was running in slow motion.

Agreed, it looked slow motion to me too. Not 10fps or missing frames, just slow motion.

Definitely. I noticed from Shulk's attacks looking slower. I could chalk that up to having an Auto-Attack Speed Up gem or something, but Air Slash looked noticeably slower too.

I took the liberty of downloading the video so I could play it unhindered offline. The framerate looked pretty solid from my perspective on that, so it could be a case of YouTube being antsy against you.

To be fair, I'm kinda impressed that they could get such a big game to run on a handheld.

I think that was the point, to show they had the game running on the new hardware. Next steps would be to optimize it so instead of just being compatible, it's utilizing it to the best of it's abilities.

Heh, it's always so strange to hear people react when a game maker ISN'T using vertical slice BS...

Wait, are we going to pretend Xenoblade didn't have severe framerate problems

Like you've never missed a partner-encouragement prompt because the game slowed down too much

Xenoblade is the perfect game to play in bed an hour or two before you go to sleep. I love playing RPG's in bed. :D. Sure you can do that on a Wii U too but I'm not in the market for one atm

A Wii U is not that much more expansive than a New 3DS and you'd also be able to play the sequel on it. :p

You must love Persona 4 then. lol

I've lost sleep because of that game and I still haven't finished it.

Oh wow. I was actually eating unsalted peanuts while reading this thread.

Worked out quite well given the amount of salt on offer here...

You're also comparing a $150 3DS to a smartphone that debuted at $600.

Not really in the same ballpark.

We don't know what the "New" one costs, for one, and the phone was $600 four whole years ago.

But alright, fair enough. Still weaker than a Vita.

It will be missing 3/4 of the pixels of the Wii version. 480 is 4x as many pixels are 240.

Heh, yeah. Goofed up my math. Thanks for the correction. :)

Xenoblade deserves better.

Sleep mode is all a game needs to be portable.

Not really. If the controls of a portable system can't match the controller of a console, then it doesn't seem like it's a good fit to me. I don't know, having never played Xenoblade or obviously, this system. But there's plenty of examples on the Vita I can give just trying remote play.

Don't care that it's on the New 3DS. I think incremental updates in hardware that keep all software compatible with the newest models is fine and will drive a model similar to smart phones (I'd expect to start seeing more games that perform better on New 3DS rather than games that are exclusive to it). It's good they decided to port the game to raise awareness for Xenoblade X.

I just wish they ported it to Wii U in HD or both platforms. An HD port would have certainly taken less work than a portable port. And, well, the portable port isn't looking too hot.

I love how within 3 years, Nintendo has switched from "We don't want to release this game in America" to "Here is the killer app for our new system revision."

Cant decide if i want the new smaller 3ds for this or the new XL. I really like the portability of the smaller system, but the larger screen may make it easier on the eyes.

They need to sort the fps out. Seriously thats atrocious. Forget the textures and what not.

I think there is misunderstanding, from people who have never played Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii or can't remember.

Characters perform auto-attacks on fixed intervals. In this gif, Shulk does an auto-attack, then performs the pink art, then another auto-attack. The seemingly long waiting time between the 2nd and the 3rd attack is completely normal.

You should focus on everyone's standby pose, for example the motion of the enemy on the right or the two smaller ones on the left.

The next sequence (not on the gif) has a QTE where everyting slows down. It's intentional and in the game, not a framerate drop, as further shown by the frame rate analysis. For reference Xenoblade had notable drops when these QTE happened, sometimes so bad that you would mess up the timing because of it, but it's not the case here.

They really didn't chose the best gameplay sequences to showcase the game to people who never played it before.

Also I checked on the Wii U with my PAL Xenoblade Chronicles version and it's indeed 30fps (29.97). Not sure why Dolphin has such an odd bug.

As far as I know... the game hasn't been announced for release outside of Japan, so this attitude really hasn't changed.

...Also I'd have preferred a portable version of The Last Story more...

I'm conflicted.

I think portable Xenoblade sounds like a great idea and I trust Monolith Soft to sort out any glaring fps or graphical problems. That said, I don't have a Wii U, I'd like to play X, and I only have enough time and money to commit to buying one system for the time being. I understand Nintendo wants to use Xenoblade to push customers into buying a New 3DS, but I honestly think it's annoying that they couldn't rerelease it in some form of HD remaster on the same system its sequel is coming to. Wouldn't that be less work anyway, considering all they would have to do is take the Wii version and tweak it to support HD vs. reworking the entire game to play on lesser hardware?

It's not normal, actually. I booted up Xenoblade and did some testing, and the speed of and intervals between Shulk's attacks are about what you see when someone has the Slow debuff.

The fact that the two Mechon in the back shuffle around at what looks like full speed makes me think the debuff is what's causing the "slowdown" here, but I can't recall if those particular enemies can inflict Slow.

The only time I had severe slow down was when I was in "that city" full of mechon and on that stairway ramp thing that circles down where you could potentially attract all the mechon on it and face like 10+ of them at once.

A character who only appeared in a single game which never set the chart on fire, was almost left in Japan, and arrives in US as GameStop exclusive of all things becomes a non-clone challenger in Smash Bros is a miracle. I feel Nintendo's trying to push Xenoblade (and X) as one of their higher-tier core franchise.

i want it and yet..
let's face it the resolution is god-awful... even if i try to swallow the sub-par fps (i'd really hope for a 30 fps rock-solid), that resolution is... bad.. and that's me being really nice..

Okay, so say I sell my current 3DS. Obviously I restoring it to factory settings, but I remember there being things that stay on system being mentioned in the past. What are they and can I just re-download my games from a download history like I can on Vita?

Does your Shulk have gems that increase his auto-attack frequency? I think they were called Haste and could boost the frequency up to +50%.
The enemies in this battle seem to be Mechon M64 and Mechon M53. Time to boot up Xenoblade again I guess.

That could be (I can't remember which gems I had equipped since I change them so frequently), but I know I don't use Haste with Reyn and his Wild Down while debuffed with Slow looks about the same as it does in the gif.

I looked up some videos of players fighting those Mechon, but the Slow debuff was nowhere to be found. Not sure if it's because they're not able to inflict it or because in every video I found the players were overleveled though.

Edit: Haste wouldn't affect the speed of Wild Down anyway, not sure why I mentioned that.

Yes really. The scope of the game is irrelevant as long as I can put it sleep whenever I feel like it, and pick it back up whenever I feel like it. That's how I'm playing FFX HD, and how I played Persona 4: Golden. I don't plan on picking this up, as I don't feel like buying a New 3DS, but I have played Xenoblade, and it would fit the portable platform well. Just like virtually any RPG honestly.

That's nice. Does nothing to address my concern for it possibly being inferior control wise. A nub for a second stick doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

Often times if you don't move around after some time, the character will stand still and stop auto-attacking especially if distance changes between the character and enemy. It's likely what happened here.

But yeah haste gems will speed up your attacks. Haste gems are pretty rare though until later in the game. Double attack gems though aren't as rare and will increase the chance of two hits at once. Doesn't really relate here, but just saying, it's what I always use.

It will most certainly be inferior control wise, but I having played Xenoblade it should be quite playable even with a shitty PSP nub for controlling the camera.
