Dead Rising 3 PC Performance Thread

STEAM/Digital Products needs to get slaped with severe restrictions from the merchandise laws.

If you buy any other product you can always return the product it's not working as intended within 14 days (swedish consumer laws (does not apply to digital merchandise)

FUCK YOU to capcom
FUCK YOU to steam

VALVE needs to step up in their game, as a publisher they also have a responsebility. Selling a broken product should warrant without a doubt a refund to the customer. I don't know what is with these steam advocates, I know they are nerds/teenagers living in their basement but still. Why would you defend a company for not solving an issue? Makes no sense. Go to dead rising 3 forums on steam, there's clowns saying the customers deservers the bad karma for buying the game, wtf!? Or clowns saying no refund is needed etc etc

Of course VALVE can't Q/A anygame that's on their store, but how about this "you have up to x time to get a full refund assuming you didn't finish 40% of the game or game time"

They should let anyone get their money back if this is not solved within x time. CAPCOM knew exactly what would happen yet they released this broken product.

I'm not going onto steam forums it's full of trolls, and (worse) steam advocates, defending valve no matter what. 60 dollars, you better work or give us a refund or (better) patch estimate. Look at killer is dead that piece of shit game is STILL not fixed.

Look at gearbox and aliens fiasco, but at least they got a lawsuit (let's hope randy liar pitchford looses his job)

1080p everything maxed with frame rate still locked I get a solid lock and no crashes.
Will unlock frame rate later and try playing down sampled.

AMD FX8350 8 core black

GTX 580oc 3gb

8gig Corsiar ram

Was worried with all the horror stories but glad I tried it.

You're nuts when it comes to this specific game. Because it doesn't perform how you wanted it to, it's broken? Bunch of nonsense.

Although having more options for refunds is always a good thing for consumers.

Constant crashes isn't the same as "not performing how you wanted". In terms of software, that can be reasonably considered broken.

The guy complaining is complaining due to performance not the random crashes which is a bit weird since you can get further draw distance, better IQ, and a more stable frame rate (in gameplay) than the XBox One on PC. The only issue I'd like fixed is the random occasional 4-5 fps drop in cutscenes. Otherwise, I find the performance perfectly acceptable. I mean the Xbox One runs in 720P with fXAA. I can run at 1080P with or without SMAA and get 30fps solid in gameplay. Mind you, I turned off DoF and Motion Blur cause devs still don't know how to properly handle those.

Well I did the .ini edit just as it says and it won't unlock the framerate. V-sync is off as I use a 144hz monitor and I've got the game set to 1920x1080@144 hz.

They're joking right?

1. Desktop Nvidia users with discrete graphics cards

The dev team is aware of reports of random crashes that occur in middle of active gameplay. It can happen 5 minutes in or 2~3 hours later. It's seemingly random but fairly consistent for those users affected by it.

For those experiencing random crashes, many users have reported that rolling back to GeForce 335.23 WHQL driver[www.geforce.com] resolved the problem, or at least reduced frequency of the crash. While the dev team continues to look into fixing this issue, this may be a viable workaround for the time being. For those who cannot roll back to 335.23, some users have had success by turning off the “Shader Cache” option in the Nvidia Control Panel

So considering they released this without spending any real resources on it, have they actually said anything about possible patches? I can't imagine them patching this at all.

Crashes suck. I haven't had a single one in my seven hours of playing the game so far, but I totally know the feeling. I've been that solitary guy complaining about crashes in PC game threads when no one else seems to be having any issues. It's shitty.

I ended up downgrading my Nvidia driver and I have played the game for 5 hours straight with no issues. It was previously crashing every 5-20 minutes on the latest drivers which drove me crazy. I sucked it up and rolled the drivers back since I really wanted to play this game.

Intel I5 4690K
8GB RAM
Geforce GTX 770 4GB (GeForce 335.23 WHQL driver)
7200rpm hard drive
Windows 8.1 64 bit

The game is indeed fun, However, i hope Nvidia releases a new driver and Capcom releases a performance update patch. I'm currently playing on a 720p HDTV downsampling from 900p internal resolution with everything at high with FXAA.

It's unrelated to GPU triple-buffering. Keep in mind that when using double-buffered Vsync, your fps count (FRAPS for example) doesn't necessarily show when you step down (60 to 30 to 20, etc.). Double-buffered Vsync does indeed do this, but you have to look at it from the frame times perspective, not frames per second. If an individual frame takes more than 16.66ms to render, it'll skip to 33.3ms but your total frames per that one second (which is an average) may not show a change unless you've stayed above 16.66ms to render for a period of time (long enough to alter the average, or if you stay >16.66ms and <33.3ms for the entire "second" it'll display 30fps). This means that your FPS (with double-buffered Vsync) can show numbers that aren't 60, 30, 20, etc. because it's an average.

I see! Thank you very much for taking the time to explain it. It makes complete sense of what I've been experiencing. :-)

Performance of general gameplay on a GTX 770 with the settings completely maxed at 1920x1080 internal resolution.
3 sets of 500 second benchmarks.

No news or a patch or anything right? playing it and having fun but bummed about having to lock it to 30 still

has anyone else run into an issue where the map screen tooltip won't go away? it says to press 'A' to continue but that doesn't do anything. switching to kb/m doesn't work either.

asking again, i have been unable to find anyone else having this issue and/or a fix for it. it's not game-breaking but it makes using the map quite difficult since i can't set waypoints or see my current side missions.

no PC OT for the game ?
what a shame, as fanboi of the series (must've beaten the first one like 10 times and the 2nd+spinoff 4 or 5 times) i am dissapoint

Well it's not a terribly anticipated release on PC and Capcom have not marketed this much at all.

I understand why now.

Game can't even cope with me turning the camera on LOW. FPS drops to about 5.

What's weird is that I supposedly don't have the recommended specs for the video card, but I have all of the features required of a recommended video card.

Worst purchase I have ever done.

Yea, I'm having fun with it and I wanna talk about how much fun I'm having with someone =(
I would love to talk with you about the game because I'm having a blast with it
but only for 15 - 20 minutes until it crashes
.

What I've seen - great game.

Im playing just fine on my 2500k@4.5Ghz + R9 290 TriX.

Just played until you arrive at the garage but everything seems pretty normal so far.

Diito I'm loving it, just wish I could get a cohesive session going, I normally get about 30mins or so before it crashes.

I am enjoying just messing about at the moment will play through it with my brother when they patch laptop support...

Not the GPU, the CPU. It's the number of frames the CPU is allowed to prepare ahead of the GPU. The CPU always has to prepare the frame before it is handed off to the GPU.

Reducing it to one does decrease input lag, but it can also cause your frame times to be more erratic. This however depends on the game, whether you're GPU or CPU limited, and other factors.

Keep in mind this is separate from double-buffered Vsync or triple-buffered Vsync, which are GPU related. This does not replace D3DOverrider's function.

This is what I was trying to imply...

I can run Far Cry 3/Splinter cell Blacklist/Bioshock infinite/Sleeping Dogs at it's highest settings, but I can't even run this at it's lowest? Can anyone tell me if that's normal with those specs, please? (it gives me about 5 FPS whenever I turn the camera at LOW settings)

I had this happen. I had to quit and restart. By restart, I don't mean reset. Just quit and continue.

I'm having fun too. I'm fairly far. Make an OT if you want.

Is there a way to play online after starting the game offline? Even when I stop and continue where I left off, I don't have an option to go back online unless I join someone else's game.

You have way better specs than me and I run the game at medium settings. Obviously there's still some performance issues here and there (stuttering, etc.), but I played it for a long-ass time last night and it was still fun.

I run it at 720p (60Hz) with medium settings for everything except Sky, which is High. I turn Ambient Occlusion off, Motion Blur off, and tone down anisotropic filtering to x2. I believe I use the default AA setting, too. I also do this in NVIDIA Inspector: http://img.techpowerup.org/140906/nvidia_20140906_161452.png (thanks again, BONKERS!)

My specs:

GTX 560 Ti
Athlon II X4
4GB RAM

Game runs decently for the most part (I'm not bothering with 60 FPS at the moment) and the obvious performance issues--which disappear after a few seconds of moving--don't hamper my fun. The highs definitely outweigh the lows for me. And, yeah, I wish I could play this at 1080p no problem at 60 FPS--heck, even 900p--but it's definitely playable if you mess around with the settings and are willing to compromise. "Willing to compromise" being the key phrase, here. I know many aren't.

That confirms that there's something just plain wrong with my game. Even at the lowest settings, my game is unplayable, litterally: stuttering like crazy, FPS drops in the single digits everytime I turn the camera. Absolutely no one could play like this.

Worst part is that I have no clue about computers, so I have no idea what to do to get better performence or even what to check first. I'm basicaly just hoping that a magic patch comes in from Capcom and fixes everything.

On a GTX 670 and a Core i5 2500k at 4.5 GHz, I was able to fully playthrough the game locked at 30. Cutscenes would occasionally drop as low as 15 FPS for me, but I never saw the FPS dip during gameplay. Hopefully either an update to the game, or to the Nvidia drivers fixes the crashing bug so that I can return to the latest WHQL drivers.

R9 295x2, i5-2500k overclocked, 16gb RAM.

I maxed out everything at 2560x1440 resolution, uncapped framerate and AA is set to FXAA.

I was getting about 45-50fps....

Also, and I hate to be a braggart, but this is probably the best game I've found to utilize gsync to great benefit vs a standard display.

The framerate jumps all over the place sure, but as long as it's 40+ fps the game seems really smooth, and with my 780 it always seems to be there anyways, so yeah.

Gsync loves third person games.

since there's nowhere else to ask this here :
is nightmare mode balanced ? i'm one of the persons that like the time constraint but the fact that it wasn't made like that in the first place leads me to believe that it's an afterthought
also, does the mode have NG+ (both normal and nightmare) ? DR1&2 had the option to restart a NG+ whenever we felt like it but looks like this one doesn't

also, if any european folk is looking for someone to coop :

From what I heard, Nightmare mode just makes the clock run down faster.
Problem here is that they fucked around a lot with the formula in DR3. Like no escorts, easy access to OP weapon at all times via weapon closets, getting around the environment isn't really a focus anymore etc. so the balance is pretty off. Normal is already piss easy and I doubt Nightmare mode would make it much harder.

There is NG+ in this game as well.

Had a very weird experience: Was playing it, averaging around 30fps as I've been getting on my GTX 580 for the 6 hours I'd played with everything on medium and 1080p. Then suddenly I grabbed an item and my game went to WINDOWED and suddenly I was getting ~45-50fps.

Then a few seconds later I picked up another item and it went back to full screen but kept the 45-50fps which it maintained in gameplay & cutscenes for the next hour I played.

WEIRD.

all right, thanks
and yeah there's a few changes i don't like, i'm still enjoying though but it's probably because i'm a sucker for this series

For nightmare mode...

Nightmare mode is pretty ass, tbqh.

It's totally an afterthought that was designed and thrown together in five minutes after seeing the negative reaction at e3 and panicking. The mode is broken for 2 very important reasons...

1. No main mission timers. This breaks progression with the sped up clock because you have no idea if you're running on, behind, or ahead of time to complete the game unless you've beaten it before, because there is zero consistency between the chapters on how long they are, with some being as short as a five min cutscene and a single boss encounter and others being 4-6 hours of busy work + sidequests.

2. Save spots are unmarked on map. Hey wanna know what's super duper fun? Loosing 3 hours of progress because you died to a super powered boss (they're much harder on nightmare) because you missed the unmarked save spot 5 steps from the boss room because the fov is like 45 degrees. This is also something that's somewhat alleviated by beating the game first.

So yeah. Don't do nightmare on your first run.

has anybody tinkered around with crossfire settings/profiles? is there anything at all that can force it to utilize both cards, even just a little?
the game's framerate totally breaks when I have it enabled.

Well, had my first crash last night.

According to Event Viewer it was a stack overflow with the nvwgf2umx.dll so does indeed point towards Nvidia, but of course could be caused by bad coding on both sides so hopefully a fix from one or the other can be forthcoming.

Apparently this dll and crash type has been seen with BF4 recently too so many be more than just DR3 and Nvidia is more responsible for a fix, but we shall see.

Going to hold off a day or two before playing much again to avoid these crashes however.
