I doubt there will be any preorders at all. They didn't do them last year, because they missed the launch day line ups and such. It's amazing, free press.
It wouldn't be an Apple event if people weren't already disappointed by it before it ever happens.
You know you're talking about a hypothetical watch here right? I know I'm in the belly of the beast here and saying the iWatch might be dumb is sacrilegious but come on.

They did preorders of the 5c last year. They did not do preorders of the 5S because of supply constraints, but you could order one online starting launch day.
That will be great for a lot of people, but I'm much more interested to see Apple's take on the kind of "wrist inbox" Android Wear is fighting to tame right now. As an busy field service technician, the idea of being able to flip my wrist to quickly check the messages bosses are texting me is immensely attractive.
This is something that the Average Joe doesn't care about though, precisely why I'm worried Apple's "soution" might be to largely ignore that aspect of smartwatches.

I'm still using an iPhone 4 as well and was getting the same issue but tried the following and it fixed everything.
1. Open an app that came with the iPhone, such as Calculator or Weather.
2. Hold down the power button on top of the iPhone until "slide to power off" appears.
3. Let go of the power button and press and hold the home button.
4. The power off message will disappear and the app will close.
5. Your iPhone home button is now recalibrated.
I'm probably gonna upgrade to the iPhone 6 as I want a larger screen.
I was just replying to the point of its popularity, not the merit of its concept.
Wearable computers are the long term future of society, and to start that in the one place people are already accustom to wearing a device is not 'dumb', it's the only viable starting point.
They'll announce it now so that they get it out there before leaks start, and they don't have to worry about people not buying the previous model after hearing about it because there isn't one. The same thing happened with the iPhone, I think. Announced way before release.

Question for those that may have some experience with this. My fiancee has a contract plan with Verizon and an iPhone 4. She wants to get the iPhone 6 as soon as possible as her 4 is rapidly dying. So, if pre-orders become available, is there a method to pre-order the iPhone 6 and receive the discount for a 2-year contract, or are pre-orders limited to paying in-full?
Neither of us have ever pre-ordered a phone before and we want to go into this with at least some basic knowledge of what to expect.

Good for them. I love new stuff, but I would probably be a happier guy if I didn't think in tech lifecycles.

You can preorder it with a two year contract. Barely anybody pays for an iPhone in full.
As an Android fan, I want to see Apple do well and make good products. After all, competition sparks innovation and creativity. The last thing I want are Android OEMs and Google themselves to become lazy, complacent and set in their ways. At the same time, I don't want them changing things for the sake of it or for ambiguous "reasons".
I'm excited to see what's in store for today, so that I can then see how my Android fam will out do it later ;p

Yeah, and if they read about it later today, the article points out that Apple have a 14-day return policy, so they shouldn't lose out.

Yeah, I think it's great that they're excited by what they do have. Hell, a decade ago, any relatively current Apple/Android/Windows phone would've seemed like freaking wizardry.

I know it's sort of pointing and laughing at people who don't really care in the end but I think putting a little research into a major purchase is a good idea.
Personally, if I'm going to enter into a contract or make an expensive purchase on a product I don't necessarily know a lot about I will at least do a google search.
Again, they probably don't give a fuck and they are better for it. I'm happy that they are happy with their purchase.

I wonder how much will a 64Gb 5.5 iPhone will cost off contract? I do have 3 upgrades available on my family plan but I rather not use them if I don't have to. (also, on AT&T now it's almost mandatory to use the Next program or they charge you $25 monthly for any phone on contract)

Pretty silly. Even if they don't care about stats, the 5S will probably see a good price cut.
With iOS 8 and the bigger screen, this is the best time to switch I think. Android doesn't have much on iOS now. It's mainly preference.

5S and 5C had pretty big sales/price reductions in the last few weeks IIRC. Because people aren't trying to stay up with every single upgrade doesn't necessarily mean they aren't aware or paid just as much.

Other models will likely be $100 cheaper if they'd waited a day.
