Apple Special Event - 9.9.14 - "Wish we could say more"

I turned on my four-year-old iPhone 4 last week for the first time in almost two years. The home button is definitely losing its input responsiveness.

Oddly enough, my six-year-old 3G still works a little better.

Heh, I had the same thing. By the end of it's use, the 3G I had even had a cracked back from when I dropped it, but the buttons were fine.

iPhone 4 home button gave up. Thank god it was jailbroken at that point so I could gesture to the homescreen.

I think the apple fanboys would have to flagellate themselves if they didn't.

Personally, I wonder if the iWatch won't be the first true Apple blunder since the Apple Renaissance.

The fitness and health stuff alone will sell it to a lot of people. It won't be a failure.

So what's the consensus here on there being an iWatch or some wearable unveiled today?

It definitely exists (why else would they be hiring watch people?) and it seems likely at this point it will be shown today. The real question is availability, several rumor mills say production mishaps are going to delay availability to 2015.

The funny thing is, this is part of my worst fear: That Apple will sell an overly heath-oriented product with a secondary focus on everything else.

There are no production mishaps. Just like the original iPhone, they're waiting until after the reveal to even begin mass production in order to avoid supply chain leaks. The yearly iPhone leaks basically prove that it's impossible to keep things under wraps once it's in production.

I'm still happy with my 5S, but I'm still curious to see what's next. I would not say no to an iWatch, but they gotta sell me on it first. If it only does the same stuff current smartwatches from other companies do and nothing more, then I'lll pass.

I hope you're right, personally (although my wallet might object).

My 3GS build is solid as well, still basically looks like new. The 4...well, replacement #3 (power button fail, light sensor fail, a year ago) and my wife managed to fracture the screen. Still works but struggles along on iOS6 like a calculator. The jump from 4 to 6 would be enormous, for anyone considering it.

Just... Please make 32gb the base storage (I know its not happening but still). £550 for 16gb is Cray, I know all the android flagships have 16gb as the base too (including the upcoming z3 which also costs £550) but at least they have a microsd slot, which makes a big difference.

Rumor is 16->64->128. I can live with that.

i'm actually trying to make an investment decision here and weighing pros/cons...i might sit this one out and let the hype die down, buy in between the announcement and the actual release

So is it interesting that the store is down right now? I wonder if pre-orders will start soon?

If it's like previous years, when the store comes back up it will have pre-order information but it doesn't mean they'll start right away. More than likely, pre-orders will happen Friday at midnight PST - unless they break from tradition.

I wouldn't mind slipping a new iPad into the reveal lineup.

I sort of think that iWatch would be best served by a separate announcement in October since it's not coming until 2015. They could just do the iPad stuff now even if it is releasing in October.

If they do it like this:

$199 - iPhone 6 (4.7") 16 GB
$299 - iPhone 6 (4.7") 64 GB
$399 - iPhone 6 (4.7") 128 GB

I think that that would be a very smart idea. Sure, you risk losing some profit from people who always bought 64 GB iPhones at $399 now for $299... but, I think a lot of people - who previously bought the 16 GB model - will now reconsider spending an additional $100 because you get nearly 50 GB of extra storage.

my 2 cents is that if youre going to buy and dump really quickly then the iwatch is probably the right thing to do it for. practicality aside, the first iwatch will be a huge fad item at the very least.

Yup, it's an easier upsell. I want to get 64gb anyways, so it's better for me.

not AAPL....OLED (Universal Display), if reports are true, LG is supplying a flexible OLED screen, but the logic probably still applies

Yup, that would sell me instantly. Its been 2 years sense I last updated my phone (iPhone 4s, took a family members upgrade to grab a 5) So I've been out of contract for over 5 months now. Does ATT still do the same subsidized 2 years contract get the phone for $200, or have they put in extra monthly fees to do a subsidy now? I like my $80 unlimited everything grandfather plan :(

How about this for the iWatch? A normal analog face with hands, just like a normal watch. This would require very little power, and it's always 'on'. The glass in front of this would contain one of those translucent OLED displays that would only need to switch on for notifications and interaction. Perhaps an additional old-fashioned LCD layer in between them to black-out the watch face and improve contrast.

The iwatch is such a stupid idea. Nerds will get it but it'll never have the mass appeal of their other products.

Yep. This is why. There's no way it would've been kept under wraps otherwise, these days.

This has been suggested in the smartwatch realm before. The issue is that smartwatches already have a lot of components to squeeze into a small space, even without the "normal watch" stuff.

I also expect that Apple will be the last company that would do something like this. Too much deference to the past. Instead, you're going to see them talk about rethinking what the modern watch should be, instead of was.

My wife really wants an iphone 6 and we are both at work today - is there any chance we will get to pre order by 4:30ish or are we doomed? I'm not familiar with apple launches.

There was only preorders for the 5c last year, so we'll have to wait and see. Doubtful it'll be today though.

They often announce a time for pre-orders. If they do what they've done in past years you'll be able to pre-order online starting Friday morning at midnight PST.
