Destiny - Review Thread

I think you underestimate how easy it is to get to level 20 in Destiny, especially if you do PVP.

In my 14 hours of play I haven't touched PvP so I wouldn't know. I'd prefer to actually play the game first (with all it entails - patrols, story co-op, repeating strikes for better gear, etc.) before overleveling myself on the content.

I have been at work all day counting the minutes until I can play Destiny. Are there issues? Yes. Can most be fixed? I believe so.

I see a very very solid base for a great game.

Just look at Diablo 3. Vanilla was so.... unbalanced and incomplete. Right now is a solid and well deserved 10/10 (IMHO), it's a completly different game.

That is the only time in the entire campaign that the gameplay gets mixed up even a little bit. Savor it. Because it will never happen again.

I was really looking forward to that and it ended up being pretty wack. The sword wielding enemies kill you in 2 hits. Not even a blocking/counter mechanic. Hit him once/twice, throw grenade and hope he gets stunned to hit him twice more, run, repeat.

So the ranking continues to drop towards my feelings on the game based on my experience with it.

Which is about a 6-6.5.

I'm glad many of the bigger sites haven't felt obliged to give it a score higher than it deserves. The fact that the only high scoring review came from essentially a non gaming site that barely played the game speaks volumes.

I suspect Destiny is going to follow the exact arc of Assassin's Creed. First game sold fantastically well, and reviewed as a 7. Solid in many ways, but also very flawed.

The sequel came along and was a much better game that nailed the concept and justified the sales, solidifying itself as a legit major franchise.

I hope Bungie pulls a Reaper of Souls and saves this game in the next year or two.

That's my hope. D3 shows how it can be done. Blizzard turned that game around big time.

Content needs to be more replayable, restrictions on the players have to be dropped wherever possible, groups have to be auto-balanced so friends can always play together, and loot has to really matter.

Agreed with you on all of the above. I just hope the devs are willing to listen and adapt and not be stubborn. As many are saying, blizz is a perfect model with Diablo 3 in terms of improvement over time.

I just got the game and played it for a couple of hours...a few things I noticed...empty environments, absolutely empty environments, they have spent 6 years to make the game to have good looking empty environments and this is supposed to be an RPG of sorts...right now the game feels quite boring i spent the first 2 hours killing the same set of enemies in the exact same way...yawn!...I did encounter a boss battle which was quite bad, i just stood at one edge and kept shooting till it fell dead...the so called last planet/game hub seems interesting reminds me a bit of mass efect citadel for some reason....the music is great but the dialogue is rather senseless...peter dinklage feels out of character and place throughout...I am playing solo though might make the game even more boring than most other impressions here but overall i am not very impressed right now, hopefully spending more time might just change that feel. There seems to be an issue with the game's flow....

I've followed the complete IGN livestream these days. The reviewer say very good things for this game. I'm expecting 8.5-9 from IGN.

The most pre-ordered new IP in the history of vidyagames is a ~75%(*) game.

If that's not godlike marketing, I don't know what is.

* Score subject to change. Restrictions apply

I do think, when the 5 big guns decide it shall sell, it will, no matter the quality. (Not suggesting it is a bad game). Their marketing power has a way to strong effect in peoples minds.

Yeah, I could see that.

Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition is so fucking good. I can't possibly recommend it highly enough.

Interestingly vanilla Diablo 3 still rated very well by reviewers (88 metacritic) and reception has only gotten better since. How much can Diablo 3 like improvements affect Destiny? Is there the ground work to add better and more fun loot? Can they make a fun crafting system? Can they make the worlds less empty? Diablo 3 had the content, it was just altering the content to make it fun. Destiny has to add the content

1. Bullet sponge enemies. Welcome to a FPS-RPG. Borderlands has those too. It's common in this type of game.

2. Our solar system is mostly abandoned according to Destiny's lore. Should they just have NPCs wandering the maps FFXIII-2 style just yammering about?

3. The dialogue is merely serviceable and the story doesn't really pick up it seems like. Universal complaint at this point.

Yea Blizzard did some serious work on D3. Bungie already benefits from an online only game because they can then ensure everyone gets every update and they can see how people are playing the game and make changes from that.

Agreed, anyone who wasn't completely infatuated with this game for reasons that defy logic could clearly see that this was a going to be a decent title, and nothing more. Game of the Year and all this other nonsense the blind fan boys were throwing around was laughable. A game that's already been made four five times over, with a questionable story and a marginal graphical update along few new mechanics(ADS is laughably one of them) isn't GOTY worthy.

The fact that people mentioned Destiny as a GOTY candidate shows how pathetic the gaming industry is at the moment.

But I believe it has gotten the justice it deserves in the court of public opinion. That's what really matters. I've been extremely happy with the reception of that game.

Now for The Evil Within...

Watching that Destiny vidoc I have no clue how Bungie employees could make such claims knowing what the game had to offer.
"What I believe will be the most exciting for people playing destiny will be the social experience of colliding with other people in this big world."

Yet the game lacks basic standard social features, you can't even text/mic chat with ease.

Who is mentioning Destiny as a GOTY candidate in here again? I think the criticism has been fairly reasonable and on point, other than the people who had hype-based unrealistic expectations from the get-go.

Remember when he hoped that AAA games will be great day one and not some years down the lane?

Wow. That's honestly crazy. Who would've thought that Destiny would possibly end up scoring lower than Killzone: Shadowfall?
Well, KZ was at least 10% too high. It should have been a 6 or 6.5. That game was terrible. I think some reviews had next gen goggles on when reviewing it due to all the ps4 craze.

I don't know if I'd call it that. It's more like every conversation was chosen, randomly, out of the middle of a different book. You're left wanting to scream, "WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT?" to most of it.

Come on. No developer (well, except Molyneaux) is going to come out and say "we're working on the GOTY", but when has a Bungie Halo game NOT been a GOTY (with perhaps the exception of ODST?).

I was not expecting the WoW of shooters, but I was expecting a lot more than what we seem to be getting based on some reviews.

Being serious, hearing some of the criticism about the game (and that UI dev's tweet) makes me really averse to purchasing this game right now since it seems very barren as a whole. But then, if I wait, I have to grind my way to burn down all of the beginner content to get to the good stuff that may or may not come later on?

Not really inspiring purchasing intent from me in the short or long term.

I think Shadow Fall reviews were fair enough. It controlled well, had great visuals, and had solid multiplayer. The direction of the campaign levels got fuzzy and it didn't do anything exceptionally well, so it felt like a 70-75% game. I hate to jab, but I also find it funny that you're claiming a "terrible" game warrants a 6.5 on a 10 point scale.

I haven't played Destiny yet, but I'm seeing a lot of praise being given for the general control, visuals, and gameplay, but criticisms for the story and repetition. A lot of critics are putting the game into the 3/5ish zone, which seems fair if those are the general strengths and weaknesses. I think most people could make an assessment on if they should buy this game from the Giant Bomb review.

Bungie has proven time and time again that they work best with limited time and limited budget.

Halo CE and ODST are living proof. When you give Bungie too much time and too much money, they spend most of their time LANing and goofing off.

So its no coincidence the game they've spent the most time and money on is their worst.

I wouldn't say it's barren but I wouldn't say it's absolute chock full of great content either. It's somewhere in the middle, which is not good for the first entry of a big, new IP.

They're opening up new playlists for the weekend. Heroic Strike roulette, relic capture, and raids. It's a start.

comedy gold.

"make a world that people want to be in"
"have enough variety that people never get bored"
"strange beings"

this game has no intrigue, no world to exist in, nothign persistent, nothing real to explore, no characters to meet/interact with, no social experience, can't name your characters, can't FUCKING TALK TO PEOPLE.

D3 was def a better game on release.

Really?

  • No endgame at all.
  • Act 2 Inferno was totally unbalanced. From easy enemies to instant kill from the very first bunch of mobs. I had to grind Act 1 for days/months until I gave up/get bored.

The base was solid. The gameplay was so fucking polished. But It was an empty shell after all. Opinions I guess...

I still think there's a chance it's more Diablo 3 than anything. Great foundation, slightly lacking in content and needing tons and tons of tweaking of small, seemingly obvious issues. After two expansions I bet it's an excellent game, just like Diablo 3 is now.
